I spent too much money at PIA so I can't be there but I did talk to Chris Fiala and Max Cohn at PIA and they are going and it does look like a 30-way. Hope they get it. Good luck everyone, wish I was there.

It will be interesting to see how they do. The same organizers (Mike Swanson, Rook Nelson) for the attempts at Summerfest last August are some of the same ones that will be organizing this one. Last August they got the 20-way, but it didn't hold long enough. The other thing, was although they had incredible talent there, there was still some major "players" missing from the attempts. Anyway, wish them luck! -Rap

News from Sebastian: A friend of mine called today and said they closed a 19-way. This is only thursday, I can't imagine what else can happen through out the weekend.

They are going to have an otter an a skyvan and enough talent to fill both planes. I'm betting the record will be broken easily and early, followed by attempts at 25, 30, and even 40. Every big name I can think of will be there. I don't think this many good flyers have been in one place since the last space games. There is going to be a huge party sat night, With the day's jumps being shown on a projector. I just hope the weather holds.

Despite marginal weather (clouds) they did a couple of jumps today with 1 attempt at a 30 way. Pretty close, but no cigar...one half of it was as in control as the judges wanted. Pretty good for their first go at it. They are going to rotate a few others in tomorrow. Amazing talent here from all over. There are about 50 or so people registered. You name em, they are here. Although, Jimmy & Hunter stayed in Deland. Had to pay the rent, I guess.

Due to shite weather...quite a few split, I believe that they just completed a 24-way. They ended up going to potsmokie yesterday to make a few attempts. The weather in Sebastian has been awful...now its nice, but windy as hell.

Yep, just heard yesterday that they completed a 24-way, but one of the judges was undecided about one grip, soooo, we'll have to wait and see. I also heard that they went down to Pehokee because of bad weather and got a 29-way, but that is not an official record (I think). Does anyone out there know first hand? -Rap

It doesnt suprise me that the judges couldnt make an official decision. I saw all the video of the attempts and I couldnt really tell who was gripped on who, etc. Olav & Cisco and a few others were doing outside video...the formation was so far apart...I just couldnt see. Its gotta be a really hard thing to video properly so you can see all the grips...and an even harder thing to judge.
Apparently, there is a bit of debate going on to how to judge this type of thing as well. With CReW, you have to hold it for 5 seconds, with RW, you have to hold it for 3. With freeflying, I understand that they are judging it based on control. They all need to be docked and "in control". They had some great attempts at the big stuff, but there were parts of the formation that werent "in control". Thats a pretty interesting way to judge...and can certainly be up to debate.

I just spoke to Dave Brown and he believes that the 24 is official. I guess that there was some discrepancy on one grip...depending on who's rules that you use. I guess one set of rules says that the grips need to be taken between the hand and the elbow, but they used IPC rules that go from the hand to the shoulder...so apparently the world record was set at 24. There is a great picture in the Zoo Bar of the completed formation...Very Nice.

This was sent to me via the Skydive Sebastian newsletter regarding the freefly record attempts:
"With all the talent at the Drop Zone this past weekend, The Freefly Training Center’s Big-Way World Record attempt definitely stole the show with an unofficial 24-way head-down formation. They are still awaiting confirmation to make it official. Weather was a major deterrent this weekend, and with the group even attempting to make the drop over a neighboring DZ in order to find a hole, and having no luck, returning to Sebastian to find one here. Organized by Mike Swanson and Rook Nelson, the freeflyers, in a meet that lasted 9 days, pulled off some really awesome head-down dives, and drew quite a diverse crowd of international talent. We’re keeping our fingers crossed about the record-breaker, guys."

The list is just too big to list the names that were there. There were most of the big names but of course not all of them. I was there :-) And very honored to participate. We built to 29 on Sunday and all the numbers in between throughout the weekend. It was nutz being in the air with 29 other people. The weather just did not want to cooperate with us. It was shit most of the weekend and Sebastian is VERY carefull not to even be close to a cloud.

Goat, you're my hero. The bigway stuff is f'n awesome. Hopefully, throughout this upcoming summer, the Texas record will continue to grow. Do you know if there is any plan for the upcoming season ref. the Texas bigways? One of my goals for this season is associated with bigway stuff. I'll be at the DZ this weekend. I just need Mother Nature to play nice with skydivers. I'm jones'n!
