Parachutist found dead on golf course
Leeann Skoda
The Arizona Republic
Feb. 13, 2008 12:55 PM

A Navy SEAL died Wednesday morning during parachute training near Casa Grande.

The accident occurred at around 7 a.m. while he was undergoing free-fall parachute training, a relatively routine training program, Naval Public Affairs Officer Lt. David Luckett said.

His body was found at the Mission Royale Golf Course and the cause of the accident is still being investigated, Luckett said.

He was a Special Warfare Operator assigned to a SEAL Team based in Virginia Beach, the Navy said in a press release.

The name of the SEAL is being held pending notification of kin.

SEAL training programs encompass a wide variety of warfare preparation and take place in various locations that will simulate real war situations, Luckett said.

Mission Royale Golf Course did not have any comments on the incident.

kpho in phoenix stated it was a jump originating in Marana. A CG golf course is quite far away from marana. They said they found his body at the golf course at 7:00 am and it was a training jump. Someone close to the golf course stated they heard a loud noise and then shortly thereafter the body was covered. They did not report if it was a jump made early morning or if it happened the previous day/night and he was not recovered until the next day. A CG golf course is an awfully long way away from Marana, even on a first out on a long pass with very strong uppers. There is a military investigation pending and everything is very hush, hush about the circumstances, if there was an open parachute involved, etc, etc.

Marana now only does millitary jumps, so it is possible. Could be any of the 4 dzs in the area since its not clearly one of them at this point.

The SF use 400 square foot canopies and do many HAHO (High Altitude High Opening) jumps. The glide ratio on these canopies is remarkable, so it's plausible that the jump was a HAHO and due to circumstances not yet know the jumper expired and the canopy continued to fly till landing in the CG golf course.

A famous general once remarked "Training and preparing for war is at times as tiring and dangerous as being at war itself"

Very true. ...

Casa Grande and Marana are roughly 40 miles apart, depending on which point you depart and arrive from

I'm sure thats the PC way for the military to describe the type of activity without allowing to much info on the specific type of training. All cloak and dagger stuff Cool

The story on the DZ in Eloy, based on discussions with persons I'd tend to think know what happened;
Flight left from Marana before sunrise (this was essentially a night jump).
HALO jump
Military was scheduled to land at Eloy, have bkfst at Bent Prop, then board a Skyvan to jump back into their home base.
Deceased believed to have ridden a spinner down, likely unconscious.
Impact with ground caused broken neck and other injury.
Deceased officer was very experienced in HALO and sport jumps.
I do not know this story to be factual, yet did speak with/hear individuals both civilian and military, commentary was essentially identical.

I jump at the smaller operation and all I heard on the news was a skydiver was found on the golf course. Started making calls and it wasn't anyone from my DZ. From what i've heard also it was a military jump, haho/halo, set for Gila Bend military reserve. Thats all I know but no association with Casa Grande Airport.

Navy SEAL Killed in Casa Grande Identified
February 14th, 2008 @ 2:14pm
by Associated Press

A Navy SEAL killed during a parachute training jump in Arizona was identified Thursday as a 37-year-old father who served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Thomas J. Valentine, a special warfare operator senior chief, was conducting free-fall parachute training when the accident occurred Wednesday morning, according to a Navy news release.

Valentine's body was found at the Mission Royale Golf Course in Casa Grande, a town about 30 miles south of Phoenix. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Capt. Scott Moore, commander of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, says Valentine was one of the finest SEALs he's ever known and described him as a role model and incredible leader.

Valentine, who is from Minnesota, is survived by a wife, son, daughter, parents and two siblings.

Rec'd a note from a someone involved, that verified the above info, and offered some additional information.
-Deceased was attached to a team from the east coast and a very experienced person (1000+ jumps).
-Jump from 18K.
-Appears to be brake fire on deployment, inducing a spin.
-Failed to initiate EP's before impact.
~the golfers reporting the incident did not see the impact, but rather walked into the site after the incident occurred.
