Add a "wow" for me too. That took guts.
I didn't understand this part at first:
"Although at a fairly low altitude, Lt Callahan delayed pulling the ripcord in order to lessen the shock, which might have broken the bombardier's grip on him."
But I guess what that means is that the speed of the bomber when they bailed out was greater than freefall terminal velocity, so by delaying the ripcord pull, they actually slowed down their airspeed a bit.

B24 cruise speed was around 160 -175mph, depending on load.

So if he could have reached it, he would have still jumped it even though it was on fire? I didn't realise they had senseless acts of video in those days!
