Feedback: "This place is an "F-ing" Joke." That's an opinion of DZ.com I've heard from more then one member and am starting to form that opinion myself. Is this a place for skydivers to discuss things, including speculation, or is it "Sangiro's World -- His Way or the Highway?"

Suggestion: Volunteers or not, the moderators are editing, altering and deleting people's posts too much.

If you think that way, the usual answer is "This aint no damn democracy". You and the rest of us are free to leave at any time and create our own site. There are several other attempts at doing this and they have all failed in recent years.

Even paying members of this site have their posts edited or removed if they are posted in the wrong area or are not contributing to the value of the thread if it is in a topical fourm. Gross speculation does not have a place in an incidents thread, it can warrent its own spin off to a new thread in a different fourm if there is a ligitimate conversation that could be held on the topic though.

Although what do I know since I am also a peasant. SlyCool

I'm cool with this now.

Personally, I'd rather have imperfect moderation than no moderation at all. I don't always agree with the moderators, and I've had stuff that seemed perfectly reasonable to me get moderated out when a wide swath of posts got moderated, but such is life in a privately-owned, moderated forum. I'd still rather have the signal-to-noise ratio as it is on here, even if it means my "signal" or other "signal" doesn't get through from time to time.

The software limits us as to how much we are able to effectively edit content that needs trimming - unfortunately sometimes good input to conversation goes along with it. It is an issue we are seeking a work-around for.

But you all can help us with that. If a thread has obviously take off an a tangent, dont reply to the last off-topic post. Reply to the 1st post that started the thread.

Yep. When we delete a post, the message we get is something like, "delete post and it's 6 replies?". There is no option to just delete that one post and leave the others that are linked to it.

Sometimes I too have felt uneasy about history
getting rewritten and threads getting mangled
with people replying to posts that are no longer
there.

But I have faith in Sangiro and what he is trying
to do here, and some appreciation of how hard
it is to even get where it is now, so I balance that
uneasiness with all the good points.

I discovered the newsgroups and rec.skydiving
back in the 80s and for a long time it was a great
place to figure stuff out and tell stories.

To me one of the best points was that anybody
could say anything and there were no censors.

But in the mid 90s a bunch of really inconsiderate
people showed up and filled every thread with so
much brain foam and bullshit that it became unusable.

So even though I feel an occasional qualm here
I think this has turned out much better.

Socialism is better than chaos and anarchy.

But I wouldn't categorize it that way in the first place. Yes, there are limits in this forum, but they are reasonable, and for the better. And if anyone doesn't like those limits, they are still free to use the unregulated rec.skydiving. So we have the best of both worlds. This is what true freedom is all about: freedom of choice, to select for yourself which way you want to do it, or even to build your own way and get others to join you. That's not socialism at all, but pure unbridled freedom.

OMG... do I EVER disagree with that.

Never shall I buy into your socialistic view that its better to allow others to dictate allowable "speech" to be "warm and safe" as some of y'all are willing to... but... this is just a posting board... so the dirty little secret that free speech isn't really so here (I haven't found a posting board yet where it is), that there is a hidden agenda here (I haven't found a posting board yet that doesn't have one), a line that shall not be crossed (ditto, last) and y'all can remain warm and safe is secure, rest asured you may... cause its just a posting board... Um, you ignored the 2nd half of the equation which I mentioned: the unregulated rec.skydiving. I did recognize that too, and how you could choose in which style you wished to participate. Therefore, you can have whatever method suits your personal taste.

I wasn't advocating that all forums be regulated, nor that all be unregulated. I like a mix of different styles, so that I can choose what fits my personal perference. That's not socialistic - that's freedom.

You're not listening very well.

Do you honestly believe that all forums should be completely unregulated, like rec.skydiving, where rude and disruptive people are allowed to ruin all conversations?

John, I beg to differ. I am listening, I just think it is some of y'all that are not. I feel my point is being missed... or ignored... or not understood by some because of an incapacity on their part... or, my bad, I'm not expressing myself well enough.

I am not hung-up on, nor think, that it would be good or okay for all forums to be unregulated. I do find dissatisifaction that Sangiro and his Moderators see fit to edit, alter, delte, supress posts (speech) of members when they see fit to do so because of their own adgenda and view of how things should be. I also am taken-aback that some of y'all think such bevaior, in the thinly shaded vail of "regulation" is okay. That's not regulation, its socialism.

However... I capitulate several facts...
1) This is just a posting board.
2) This is just a posting board... and not regulated by the Freedoms and Liberty of Individual Rights perserved by the U.S. Constitution.
3) This is just a posting board... that is also multi-national and many members don't share, agree with and in some cases oppose the viewpoint of #2.
4) This is just a posting board... Tongue

It doesn't... and there's no reason why it should. You've had this explained to you HOW many times now? There is no right of free speech in a private venue.

When you go to Perris, do you bring your license and logbook to manifest, or do you gripe about OTHER dz's not requiring you to show your license / logbook to manifest?

Same difference - you want to jump at Perris, you follow their rules. Conversely, you want to post here, you follow Sangiro's rules.

What's so hard to understand about that?
