Monarch Can't Post

Has anyone heard of a monarch parachute? I'm going to demo one for a month.... I've been jumping a spectre... will the monarch be much different?

I acually know a guy who still jumps a Nova! He took the "Nova" labels off of the end cells to keep from catching shit about it.

I didn't like the Monarch. Sort of like a Sabre 1 but with worse openings.

I'm demoing a 190 spectre right now, but I have to return it to PD. So either I jump the 170 spectre I bought or jump the 195 monarch.

What would your wing loading be on the Spectre 170? Have you jumped it yet? How have you been doing on the Spectre 190?

I've been doing alright on the spectre 190... but I only have 15 jumps on it. The final seems kinda fast for me, so I don't want to downsize yet. Also, I haven't landed it in cross wind or downwind yet... so I want to see how I do with that before I try the 170.

I weigh 127 not geared up and I'm 5'8"... so I guess geared up, I'm around 150.

Re: [adventurechick] Monarch [In reply to] Can't Post

The Monarch was one of the first ZP canopies I ever jumped. At the time (not having much to compare it to) I thought it was a great canopy to fly. However the openings were so damn hard I would never consider buying one.

I have heard people found ways to tame the openings so maybe the one you are going to demo has been de-tuned.

Definetly the hardest opening canopy I ever jumped.

"Intentional downwind landings... " Crazy I've never been a fan of going out and doing that on purpose... just know how to deal with em / they'll come in time.

Anyway, I realize you're probably not looking for someone to tell you do this, don't do that, but I have to admit, I'm a bit leary of seeing you jump a Monarch at your experience level... although... given the size Monarch in question / how much you'll load it... I suppose its not a really bad call. You may hate the openings, like a lot have said and best find someone that's packed one a lot and you may find the landings to be fast... err... sorry... there I go... its a guy thing... doh!

Anyway, good luck, be careful. Let us know how it goes... Wink

I would rather you keep the 190 a bit longer. Try the Monarch and see what you think. If you don't like it*, put some more jumps on the 190. I'll wait. Smile

I know Amahra is helping you a bit. Ask her about the possibility that the Spectre 190 landings may seem fast because you're focusing on the ground at flare time instead of the horizon. Landings always seem faster if you're staring at the ground and you'll always have better landings if you look at the horizon. Smile

*I've never jumped a Monarch & I have no idea what they're like. You might enjoy it, you might not. Dunno.

Re: [adventurechick] Monarch [In reply to] Can't Post

Monarchs compete directly with Sabre 1.
Two senior jumpers at Pitt Meadows have hundreds of jumps on their Monarchs and still jump them on a regular basis.
Bob likes his Monarch 170 because it is slow enough for demo jumps into tight stadiums downtown and he often jumps it with a camera strapped to his head.

I don't think you can know how to do something without practicing it, but that's a topic for another thread.

About the only way I'd jump a Monarch nowadays is if it had a pocket slider. Since they are fairly cheap to put on, that may be a good compromise.

I'll opt to land out and into the wind rather then follow someone downwind in 0-5, if its enough to move a flag or wind-sock, its enough to pay attention too and set-up your landing into the wind, and, again, I'll land out so I don't have to listen to the zoomies bitchin' about first person down sets the pattern that just downwinded the whole load no matter how slight the breeze... guess its just too many years of jumpin' at Cal City where you respect and learn to jump in wind or pay lots of medical bills... intentional downwind landings in anything more then that, well, I don't think that very wise and I'll leave it at that... and, sorry, you're right on the "other thread thing"... Laugh

Awh heck, can't resist...

---- On Topic -----

AChick, are you going to jump that Monarch or not? If you do, let us hear about your experience!

I am going to try it out on sunday... but I will probably keep on jumping the spectre 190 a lil bit more until I feel comfortable with downsizing to the 170.

If you jump long enough you will land downwind. If you can't land a canopy in a slight downwind (say, below 5 knots) then the canopy is too small for you. Best way to find out if that's the case is try it under good conditions, so you don't have to do it for the first time in bad conditions.

I have started a new thread in S+T on this topic if you wish to continue it.
