I have a side mount for freeflying which i get a bit of riser slap from but its a good mount. Top mounts are good for all the weight is above, so when it comes time to dump, you head is not being moved from side to side but straight up and down.

Top mount is definately better from a safety point of view. You won't need to worry about riser slap as much. The risers can can up straight and not touch anything.
