"Where to place a student in the progression"
Not a particularly descriptive title, but I'll explain.
If a student comes to you in the middle of the progression of a training method (any method), and has not jumped for 2 months, do you
(refresher training for exit, CC, EP, landing, etc. is assumed to be included regardless)
1. Determine that they are ready for the next "level", or "catagory" or jump, by their documentation (stating so) and quizzing, (or possibly other things) and then train for, and do that jump, or
2. Assume that since it has been a while, and that you don't know them or their previous instructors and how accurately their previous instructors described their performance, and train them for an "earlier" or simpler "level or catagory" to check them out before continuing at their documented place in the progression for the next jump.
3. Any other? Or any other comments? What are your feelings about this as an instructor, (or DZO if you are).
[Disclaimer: I am asking this question only as an instructor interested in providing skydiving students in general with the "best" possibly instruction.]

Gary, anytime a student (anyone who does not possess an A license) shows up on my doorstep and has not made a jump in 30 days, I am going to put them through a refresher and then repeat the last jump they successfully completed. The only caveat to that would be that I would not make a student repeat an AFF Cat A (old level 1) if their logbook showed that they passed that skydive. I am not letting go of them on a Cat B anyway, so I see no reason to not let them do that skydive.

I agree with Chuck. And if the DZ he came from is local to the area, I usually know the Instructor and would give him a call if I thought anything was funny about him changing DZ's for his training.

I would have to agree in general, but if I, or an instructor I could talk to or see video, felt they were a strong student....depending on the level, I might not repeat or I might modify a dive so there is minimal repeat and some future skill work. I look at each situation.
