     Hook Turns

Forgive me for sounding ignorant, and I'm probably not experienced enuff to do this...but how do you hook turns? Do you use the rear risers? I want to start learning more about that in conjunction with...gotta do a stand up landing soon!

If I'm always prepared to do a PLF...then what in the world am I supposed to do to get a stand up landing?

What you "think" you cannot do ...you CAN if you "think" about it Wink

It's really hard to say what you need to do, when I don't think any of us here have seen you land.

Maybe a start would be what kind of canopy did you learn on and what are you on now?

Have you had an instructor watch you land? If so, what did he say?

Are you still flaring you high or have you worked that out?

How many jumps a weekend do you do?

Ok ignore all that other stuff....really you need to talk to your instructors, have them watch you land, get video of you landings, by watching your self you will see if you are flaring too high, flaring all the way, not putting your feet down when landing. Trust me video is a great tool, cause even if your instructor is to busy to watch, you can show it to him after the beer light and after you have placed a cold one in his hand. Then he can go over it step by step and show you what you are doing wrong.

I'll do that....video and stuff....but I still want to know how to do a hook turn. Am I being too aggressive? I mean...should I have some stand up landings first? Is there a certain progression prior to hook turns? I'm just pickin the experts brains here..... ; )

Yes you are being to aggressive.

A hook turn is a high performance manuver that by pulling down on the front riser, increases the speed of your canopy which with proper technique will cause it to plane out across the ground for a much longer amount of time than just flying it strait in. If performed incorrectly can injure and/or kill.

Not only should have you have stand up landings, you need to be able to run out landings, slide out landings, and know every aspect of landing your canopy.

Do a search of this forum it already has lots of information and debates about the progression of hook turns.

A hook turn is a very agressive approach, done only by canopy experts. It is not for you.

There is a difference between "being prepared for a PLF" and "being in the position waiting to execute a PLF". As you progress with your landings you'll find you don't literally need to be landing with your feet and knees togeather when you're under a ram air canopy. You'll find it's a whole lot easier to slow down the flare, wait for the canopy to plane out, and run off the landing if you need to.

That's the abstract. Now go talk to your instructors for implementation instructions.

Listen to what is being said by these others. Hook turns kill...
Read the USPA fatality report. The technique, to be successful, requires a lot of jumps and a lot of practice. It's not meant for the 10 jump per month rookie.

Skydiving is not a static excercise with discrete predictability...

Remi is correct here, at least I hope. To everyone: Please do NOT troll in this forum. These discipline-specific forums are meant to be used as a tool for learning. Keep the bullshitting to the talkback forum.

This thread is officially done.
