Yankees Cashman Breaks Leg Skydiving Can't Post

http://sports.yahoo.com/...-220016818--mlb.html

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Yankees general manager Brian Cashman broke his right leg and dislocated the ankle while skydiving in Florida.
Cashman jumped with the U.S. Army Golden Knights in a plane from Homestead Air Reserve Base outside Miami, a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project. He was hurt on his second jump Monday.
The Yankees said X-rays at Homestead Hospital revealed a broken fibula and dislocated ankle. Cashman was scheduled for surgery later in the day with Dr. Dominic Carreira at Broward Health Medical Center.
''I'm in great spirits, and it was an awesome experience,'' Cashman said in a statement. ''The Golden Knights are first class. While I certainly didn't intend to raise awareness in exactly this fashion, I'm extremely happy that the Wounded Warrior Project is getting the well-deserved additional attention.''
The 45-year-old, who has been the team's GM since February 1998, also has rappelled down a 350-foot, 22-story building in Stamford, Conn., in an elf's costume the past two Decembers as part of the town's ''Heights and Lights'' celebration.

Makes me wonder how his contract will sort out.
I know the professional athletes I have taken on jumps did so in contradiction to their contracts.

Just waiting to hear about the incident details and what led to the injury. No speculation, just identifying the incident and waiting for the lessons to be learned.

Cashman is the General Manager, not a player. He's from the Yankee's front office.

Classy response on his part. No blame game. No finger pointing. Good job!

And that's the way it should be. I wonder though, did he put his feet down when he should have kept them up and let the TI do the work?

makes me wonder how professional were these tandem-demo pilots Laugh
I would consider this jump in the same category as a demo, and according to Twardo...

Demo jumping isn't skydiving - the three priorities in order are:

Don't hurt anyone on the ground.

Don't get hurt.

DO give the promoter exactly what you said you would...flag, smoke, streamer or whatever - on time & on target.

One must be able to DO all three EVERY TIME ~ it's a business & professionalism is the key to success.

If one can only do 2 out of the 3, they're 'just another Skydiver' ~ fuckin' up a demo!

I spoke with the Tandem Master involved. He is a highly skilled and professional instructor and a class act. It was the second jump of the day for the GM...it was a simple case of him reaching out with his leg for the ground...

That's what I figured. Cashman fucked up. But good on him for not being negative about it.

Usually the TM's tapped to do this kind of high profile stuff are top notch 1st round picks...the problem is they are dealing with an unknown variable
that can significantly affect the outcome through poor performance.

Something they don't have control over...bad situation when it's a public personality for sure, but unlikely the fault of the TM's 'professionalism' in cases like this.

Sorry if my tease got misinterpreted. I am not questioning the professionalism of GK tandem masters. They certainly have more experience than I will after all my life.

Are you sure? here's a pic of the first landing....TI is on his knee's(?) student taking the landing on his ankles. Terrible form from the instructor on this landing, broke the student on the second one so I have to assume was no better ?

I does more often than not.

Then again, I'm sure the Golden Knights would be receptive to any advise ya wanna offer regarding SOP for high profile demonstration jumps...they have such little experience in that area! WinkLaugh

Not at all true. The qualifications for these jumps are that you must be:

1. Famous
2. Well-connected
3. The people's choice.

Joe/Jill Fabeets in BFE, who does 1000 tandems/year, would have been a much better choice.

WinkLaughYeah, those 1500-2000 8-ways per year make them the perfect candidates for a high-profile tandem. I repeat: Famous - Well-connected - the people's choice.

Did I miss the sarcasm font or are you really not aware that the Knights have completely separate teams for tandems, demos, and competition?

I would HOPE Steve knows that, he's been around the block a few times.

Though I don't understand the ~ Famous - Well-connected - the people's choice ~ comment-

Golden Knight Tandem Team:

SFC Joe Jones- Team Leader, Airborne Ranger
SFC Teigh Statler, Airborne Artilleryman
SSG Jon Ewald, Airborne Calavary Scout
SSG Jared Zell, Parachute Maintenance Technician
SSG Aaron Figel, Airborne Ranger
SSG Rachel Medley, Airborne Medic
SSG Reese Pendleton, Airborne Infantryman
SSG Noah Watts, Airborne Infantryman

I've personally seen the GK's do several high profile tandem jumps...IMHO anyway - they know what they're doing.
