"The Dropzone Gear and Rigging forum is where you can discuss any gear related questions and issues. Ask about gear before you buy it and find out what others are using and how. "
I wonder what the question or issue is that brings it into the Gear and Rigging Forum.
There was actually an interesting thread about that, people going nutz thinking I had a rig w/ a 100sq ft canopy, when I first got my rig and posted a pic.

haha, send that pick to ankie, they should have a contest to see if anyone can guess what size canipies are in there.
Quick question and a way to get the thread back onto a gear and rigging topic to make the powers that be happy !! Does anybody else notice/have a "catch" in the bottom corners of the reserve tray. What I mean by catch is that the corners of the reserve tray are not sewed in, maybe a 1/4 to 1/2". Not "in" the reserve tray but at the top of the main pack tray in the riser channel. This leaves a little catch or ledge I can feel with my finger. I am carefull about not getting the riser and the lines under the catch as it could cause a twist as the bag is commmming off my back. I will get a picture tonight.. It is a new rig and I do not know if it is part of the design or not. I had someting similar on a old Javelin I had and just packed accordingly. Just curious....

Edited to show what I am askig about. Again not a huge deal but curious if anybodyelse sees this...

Wow.. that looks very wierd to me. I would have to double check my rigs (if it ever gets unpacked with this crappy cold nasty weather) to see if they have this. My recollection is that they don't. I believe bkdice's rig also doesn't have that.
My first reaction is that it is a sewing error, but I would have to compare them side to side... How old is the rig?
Do those pics have the reserve packed, or unpacked? If it is empty, the shape can be significantly different.. My first wings has a little bit of an 'overhang' into the main pack tray, but nothing like that.. My newer wings is much more 'straightwalled'.
Is there a 'hole' into the reserve tray at the corners?
that is on my dad's girlfriends rig. she has quite a few jumps on the rig know, and hasn't had any problems. i still can say i'm not sure if i like it, but i haven't seen anyone have a problem with it yet.
Here's mine. I make apologies for the carpet, it was taken in a hotel honest!
Jumped for the first time on Jan 1st, I love it. It's not just the rig, its the customer service that comes with it, FANTASTIC.
I was once told that packing a new canopy was really hard, I find packing mine into the wings really easy. I have a 150 sabre2 and yet the container is smaller than friends 135 and 120 javelins. Wierd, any idea why??????
(This post was edited by ethan on Jan 31, 2004, 10:26 AM)
I expected as much when the moderators are participating. The forum is for gear related issues and questions. At least that is what the header still says. Hey, look at my pretty rig is not an issue or question.
I suppose then it is OK if I post a bunch of photos of my pilot chutes.......and helmets, gosh there must be 20 or 30 around the DZ with lots of pretty colors. Mostly Pro-Tecs, but there are some Factory Divers, Oxygens and Z-1s along with a few Freefly types. Maybe someone will add on photos of their custom painted helmets. Jumpsuit pics too, yes, lots of pretty ones. And shoes. We had a thread about what kind of shoes do people wear (which is actually relavent and appropriate), maybe some pics would be helpful and interesting there.

Do question marks make a question?

Shouldn't this have been a PM, instead of bad mouthing the moderators in the open?

j
The rig is spankey new. The reserve is packed up in the noted picture. Also the rig has the cut in laterials. As was noted by Kelly where this is on these rigs, maybe this is a characteristic of that design. Dont know but it was something I noted on an old J3 I had years ago where I always worried about packing so that it would catch. Like I said it is something that is probably not a big deal but I wanted to see if it was noted by others..
Shouldn't this have been a PM, instead of bad mouthing the moderators in the open?
Why? I'm sure it's much more satisfying to do it in the open.
So I'll answer it in the open. I don't see posting pics of gear as being "look at my pretty rig." Part of ordering a canopy/container/jumpsuit is choosing and arranging the colors. Seeing what other people have done with the colors on their gear can be helpful in figuring out which arrangements look good on a particular gear item.
Sure, people can see rigs out at the dropzone but what about those who are ordering something that isn't popular at their dz? And most people aren't playing with gear colors at the dz nowadays - they do that at home (or work) while they are on the computer.
imho, the Gear forum is the proper place for pics of Gear. And since I'm the only greenie in here now my opinion carries a bit of weight - unless HH disagrees with me and moves the threads, which is of course his right and I would follow his lead in the future.
I'm sure that all of alan's comments and compliments in the Infinity thread are a way of showing his disdain for how this forum is moderated... And at the risk of offending damn near everybody yet again - DILLIGAF?
I posed a real question. That should keep it here, right?? I do agree it probably is better here then in Talk Back or in General as it is probably a good help for people, maybe a streach on that but I dont think it is way off for this forum..... Besides, there is not a "Rig Love" forum..
What exactly constitutes "badmouthing"? These gear photo threads are pure BS and all the rationalization in the world won't change it. Someone posts advertising some gear for sale and it is quickly pointed out by some one that this is not the right forum for that and it stops. But somebody decides to promote Infinity and Wings by posting a pic (with a little more than vanity and a desire for bonfire talk as motive) of their rig and requests for posts of pics of others with comments about how great the rig looks and it is OK. Then a couple of moderators jump on the band wagon and won't admit a mistake. We get a rationalization that it is gear and it helps people make color choices. BS. Where was that? Hey, Newby question, would you all post pics of your gear so I can use them to choose my colors? Ya, right!!! Or, Hey, I can't decide what colors to choose, would all of you post pics to help me decide? Uhhh huh.
The red one looks a little pregnant on the bottom. Is the canopy bigger than what it is designed for?
it may be from the birdman mod. the container has almost no corners (it is sewn up like and inch or 2). and sometimes if you don't get the bag in there just right, it does that.
Quick question and a way to get the thread back onto a gear and rigging topic to make the powers that be happy !! Does anybody else notice/have a "catch" in the bottom corners of the reserve tray.
Well, you may be a little tongue in cheek, but good question anyway. As rigger I've also noticed this but it did not concern me as much as the catch on the reserve PC bridle. When packed according to the manual, with the S folds under the side flaps at the bottom of the reserve pack tray, I've found on several occassions that the tension that the flaps put on the bridle traps it and inhibits the PC launch.

First, my intent has not been to "badmouth anyone". I don't feel I did. Second, if I have something to say, I say it in the open where I can be held accountable.

Fine, but look at the first post. No question or issue there and I haven't seen a lot of requests here for help in choosing rig colors. It is bonfire talk and should be done in the General Skydiving Discussions Forum.

Very fair assesment and it could be accomplished in the GSD Forum which is not defined as gear related issues or questions. I come to this forum expecting to find information about rigging and issues about rigging and the gear we use, not to see posts of people admiring each others color selections. If I want to discuss color selection I would expect to do that in the GSD Forum. Again, I would point out that there have been no posts here requesting help in color selection of rigs or anyone stating a problem with it.

This is really the bottom line. It would be PI for HH to do anything but back you up so........
A little off topic, but any idea why Derek is not green, or is that a private issue for Derek?

No, I would not paint it with that wide of a brush. In general this is my favorite forum and I try to follow it is much as I can. I come here looking for more serious "issues" than rig colors and hope that readers looking for that kind of conversation can find it in the general discussions. At the risk of being redundant, my posts have been intended to be more along the line of keeping things in check, like when someone posts advertising and promotion here. I am sorry for being such a pain in the ass about it.

I do know how to admit my mistakes. I've done so in these forums several times. I don't feel I've made one in this instance.
Perhaps you should take this issue up with Sangiro if it's this important to you?
Thanks again. Seems like a nice option and worth the sacrifice in appearance/packing to improve bag extraction into the low pressure the BM suit creats. Function over style.

right.
i also did this mod to my container because i was having problems with my bag coming off my back. i jump pull out, and for some odd reason they have a shorter bridle for the pull outs. i didn't know this, and also ordered a smaller pilot chute, which henry didn't want to build (23" i think, maybe 24") but he did. and when i pulled my bag wouldn't come off my back until i hit the side of the container. well i didn't want to call wings and let them know they were right about having too small of a pilot chute , so i let my corners out a bit, and it fixed everything. part of the problem too was i was putting a 85 vx in a container made for a 79 fx, so it was too big. but i made it work .
hopefully on my new ext i won't have to do this. i ordered an extra long bridle (like an extra 2 ft.) and a normal size pilot chute.
Perhaps you should take this issue up with Sangiro if it's this important to you?
Maybe you missed it in my other post: "It would be PI for HH to do anything but back you up so........ "
Again, I don't have an issue with how this forum is moderated in general. We disagree on the pic of my rig threads. I did prefer Dereks style much more but that is not so much a comment on your ability as it is my preferences. I asked about why he is not moderating and you seem to have chose not to comment, even after I left the door open for you to direct me to him personnally. Must be a private issue.
any idea why Derek is not green, or is that a private issue for Derek?
If you would pay attention, you would have seen that Derek asked to be a non-greenie, since he stopped jumping and didn't want to end up correcting someone for something that is untrue. Basically, since he may not be able to keep up with current gear and gear issues, etc.
A very noble and smart thing to do IMHO, but then again, Derek is a class act.

i jump pull out, and for some odd reason they have a shorter bridle for the pull outs.
Inquiring minds........... Why is the bridle shorter?
Is it possible that it has something to do with risk of entanglement or delay in pin extraction in the event you grab the bridle instead of the pud for deployment? I have a pullout pc here and the bridle is les than 5 feet long. They are not popular in my area so I never gave it much thought or had any motivation to question it before.

that may be it, but i really have no idea. and i guess i've never really asked anyone it before.
but it wouldn't make too much sense because sunpath has a much longer bridle than wings does, and they i assume haven't had any problems.
Maybe you missed it in my other post: "It would be PI for HH to do anything but back you up so........ "
Sorry, I missed that. While Sangiro does in general back us up, he has "reversed" a thread deletion on occasion and he has deleted/moved threads/posts that I might have left up. I don't think he worries too much about my feelings when it comes to his website.
In reply to:

I liked Derek's style too, and I'm sad that he's chosen not to moderate any longer - and it was his choice, made because he has quit jumping and is not doing as much rigging as he used to. This forum really needs an active rigger as a moderator. I haven't been an active rigger in years. My forte is helping people choose their gear - which I feel is also a valid use of this forum.

I don't always have time to follow every thread, so I do miss somethings and when I do have time I don't go back and catch up on evrything. I try to pick up where things are at.

Thanks, I didn't know he had stopped jumping. He still seems to post quite often and his posts are just as good as they always have been. With his experience and expertise I would think that he could have continued to be what I considered to be the best moderator on DZ.com.

Derek is the best. IMHO he still could be if he so chose, it would be a while before he really got out of touch and there is no law requiring him to comment on something he is not sure about. I consider that a trademark of his, he knows what he is talking about and if he is not sure, he finds out.

I guess that is your idea of a personal dig that can squeek by without falling into the "attack" classification. In answer to the "question" you posed though, no, I would not delete it, I would move it to the GSD Forum. I can recall when I was a moderator and pretty inexperienced at it, I deleted a couple of threads in haste and later regretted the mistake becuase even though they didn't belong here, in retrospect they would have been good exchanges in other forums. Hey, Pat Handel was visiting in Texas last Fall and told me the word around your DZ is that you write posts/reviews on canopies you hadn't jumped at the time you posted, he said it's a bit of a joke around the DZ. Was he BSing me?

Hehe! You had me right up to the sly wink. Yes, HH probably puts his judgement about the site ahead of your feelings alright. He'll do what he thinks is the PC thing to keep building the community. In this case, that would be letting you do your thing. My opinion, yours will vary.

That has always been apparent and never an issue as you are a good community builder and have made the time to keep up. My observations have been that you only gave advice on topics you were well versed in, gave good advice when you gave it, and stayed away/referred things you weren't sure about.

Yes, but in my opinion choosing gear is an issue and choosing color schemes is campfire talk. I make a distiction between gear and colors. You choose to blend them together......good community building. You win, I lose.
Hey, Pat Handel was visiting in Texas last Fall and told me the word around your DZ is that you write posts/reviews on canopies you hadn't jumped at the time you posted, he said it's a bit of a joke around the DZ. Was he BSing me?
Pat was a cool cat, flew in for the AOT boogie, rumor has it that a couple people left his Tripacer in the early morning. What he said, I don't know, but the one thing I do know is that I don't post about something I don't know about personally. Thus, if someone thinks I'm not being truthful, that's their opinion. Honestly, at the last AOT boogie, I wouldn't know, I was so busy doing tandems and USPA Coached jumps, I wouldn't have noticed or cared.
The red one looks a little pregnant on the bottom. Is the canopy bigger than what it is designed for?
Not at all, Alan. If you look at the photo that LouDiamond posted of himself, me, Jari, and I in our matching rigs and our BirdMan suits at Eloy, it might give you a better idea. Jari and I have identical-sized rigs. Both have Sabre2 97's and PD 106 reserves. Our second rigs (same size, W1-2) hold Velocity 79's and PD 106 reserves. As to the "pregnant" look, I toy around a bit with how I close the rig. Sometimes I pack it pin to grommet, sometimes grommet to BOC (dynamic corners, so it really doesn't matter). I find it opens just fine either way. I am incredibly happy with these containers.
Thanks again. Seems like a nice option and worth the sacrifice in appearance/packing to improve bag extraction into the low pressure the BM suit creats. Function over style.
It's just a bit more work, Alan, to get the bottom of the container clean. It's more of a pain in the ass on cold, dry days, but the added safety that comes from the open corners is way more important to me than if I get a bit sloppy on my closing job.
Yet you have time to pick this thread to death? I don't understand why you care SO MUCH about threads like this that don't go along with your idea of "Gear and Rigging". I understand you don't think it belongs here, but that is not your choice to make. If you don't like the thread or you don't find it useful to you, don't read it. There is plenty of useful information to all kinds of people in every different kind of thread posted in this forum. If its of no importance to you, then move on to another thread. If you have such a problem with the way the forum is moderated, perhaps you should see if you can become a moderator yourself.

My beautifull rig...made for a BIG reserve and a small main...218/149....
and to add some good to this thread..this is one of the benefits of sunrise rigging. Henri will make just about any size combo you want. with this rig it is tight with a 149 in it so I can go easily down to a 120 if I want in the future.
(This post was edited by skymedic on Feb 1, 2004, 11:09 AM)
Exactly. Hey alan, I scratched my head as to where to post, and this was my best guess. If it didn't belong here, I figured it would get moved. No big deal, I took my best shot at it.
And second. If you don't like the thread, don't read it! Simple as that. I am sure you could figure out the nature of the thread from the first post.
No worries though, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
here's a pic of my fist wings w-13-1 (i'm going on my third now, it will be here next week hopefully)
this poor rig has been through hell, i've put about 500 or so jumps on it. and she's still going strong. but it went through me learning how to swoop, which was ugly, when no one was around to teach you how, you tend to crash a lot when you go big and don't know how , and being like 14 and invisible didn't help either.

it will be the same layout as my current rig *the black one. but the main flap strips and pin stripes will be different.
i can't remember exactly, but it's something like blue, matalic silver, blue, black, matalic silver. or something. i can't remember. and blue main pin flap.
I saw this in the Gallery at the wings website and got one exactly like it. I love it. I Have ordered a suit using the same disgn, should arrive any day.
I think these types of threads are very helpful. I have been playing around with the Wing color program and have not been able to find layouts that I like (I have the colors I want) so it is very helpful to see the different patterns being used.
I just want to let you know that this thread is really a great help in looking at the varieties of styles and colors for the Wings container. I will be returning to the sport this coming spring after being out of the sport for 9 years and I am going to be ordering my Wings container in January. Keep up the pictures posts!
I am ordering mine this week. I wonder what the free option will be in Jan.? This months is ying yang or split color. I can wait till next week if it is a goodie! some one tell tell I know you know what it is.
Thanks. I love my Wings. I was out at Z-Hills at Easter when I ordered it. Gareth took all the time in the world to explain the options for me, which I took most of them, and Ankie is a sweetheart, helping me out by putting a rush on the rig and shipping it ready to jump out to Perris Valley so I would have it for the Calendar shot.
How was that shot taken? Its so clear that it almost seems Hollywoodish....was it taken in the air?
wally
Yup, taken in the air. And yes, it was Hollywoodish when we did it. Be sure to check out the JFTC calendar and buy one when it comes out. If you like that picture, you will love the others.
Deuce took the picture, and we were both very comfortable with the distance since we both do CReW. But, there were a few times when we were in a cloud, and all I could see was his flash, that I was worried.

That one was taken at about 12,000 feet with a 100mm lens. Brialliantly clear air and beautiful sunlight over an almost solid cloud deck reflecting light upward.
And Mary is just super fun to dogfight canopies with.
At one point I'm shouting at her and she's looking at me like "what?". We get endcell to endcell and I say "Where's the damn dropzone?" She looks at me with this 'calm down you weiner' look and says "right over there!"
Yeah, it was when it was new and unpacked. Im not sure if you tried to bunch one of those little bastards together and make em stay........but its not easy.
well it's not the greatest picture of my wings...but it's still cool. by the way, it's identical in color scheme to my first wings, just a wee bit smaller.
When I ordered they said 7-8 it came in 6.5. Smart will be in next week(7 weeks) and I was told today that my Spectre will be here at the later part of May which will have been 10-11 WEEKS!
dude what jumpsuit do you wear...I need a large one back in the 70s i jumped a ballon suit.Every one wears tight suits now but at 280 in gear i need a slow my ass down fall rate jump suit lol
In the last pic, there seems to be a gap between the pilot chute top and the side flaps of the reserve container. If that's the case, your reserve closing loop is too long or the bulk of the reserve has been distributed incorrectly. The pilot chute top should sit flush on the side flaps, or below the side flaps, but never above. You shouldn't be able to stick your fingers below the pilot chute top.
To add - This is the container I ordered just before my accident, that came in a few days before the cast came off, and was assembled just before Safety Day, which was my first day back in the air. I've got a PD 160 reserve and a Spectre 170 in it. And a total of 8 jumps on the kit. My son Esau spent many hours picking out the colors and pattern. I think he did a pretty good job!

Well I finally got to jump it; and I am impressed! Its like sitting on my couch under canopy, very comfy. And of course I christened it on my first jump with a small grass stain on the leg pad. Oh well, I'll take it!
Sometimes, we give the customers too much choice.....
Thats what I tell people about the used caopy I jump!
By the way, I'll have pics of my Wings as soon as I get it back from Ankie. The bum who measured me didnt do a good enough job and I need some tweaking...

Is it my fault you went back to Canada and started pounding back ding-dongs ?
yep..no question about it...Sunrise has been awesome to me over the almost three years I've owned my rig. I just dont ever see buying a different brand container.
The Tie Dye is Chad Conner's rig (currently in Iraq) The Black with Red, White and Blue is Justin Denton's rig (currently in Korea) The Blue one is mine.
The two black ones with yellow or the Screaming Eagles Vidiot rigs.
Looks good! Mine is the same colours (I go for dark colours - shows up less dirt!) but I also went for the tie-dye option. Hopefully mine should be here mid January! *cross fingers* I'm going on a skydiving tour of NZ in February so I hope it gets here in time to change my vigil and reserve over before I go...
This isn't mine, but is one of three new matching employee rigs at Skydive Santa Barbara. I just assembled this first one. The mfBitch, Jamie, gets credit for the color design.

well don't be shy or coy about it post a pic Go on you know you want to
soon, my pinchecking friend, very soon... (i'm too busy making love to it right now to take said pics... i don't think y'all wanna really see that anyway.)
just be very nice to her "Valentines day" wink, wink
probably see right through that plan but hey its worth a try
i already was... brought her back an expensive tin of chocolate covered strawberries from a recent business trip... said i couldn't wait to let her know i loved her, didn't want to wait for a contrived holiday.
Its somewhere in here, but I will upload it again...just for you
nice. how long you had it?
About a year. It looks a LITTLE worse for wear now, but not too bad.
i was thinking it looks pretty good, considering the silver would show dirt pretty easily i would think.
That pic was take right out of the box. But really, it does not look too bad except on the flaps and a little of the white where my hand might go while packing.
was Jeff's done after mine like as an inspirational thing (which would be a good thing), or are we just 2 creative geniuses (which would be good too) ?
I know this is just a pic of my container but Joannie just sent me pics of this while I am deployed to Afghanistan. SWEET, only six more months and it will be in my hands
Just curious, what does everyone think of Wing's risers?
I need a new pair and am thinking of ordering some Wings.
I'm currently "meh" about the risers on my wings. The top toggle stow tab isn't stitched all the way down to the grommet, so it seems like it's developing a bit of a set where the toggle goes through the cats eye.
I originally disliked the tight elastic stow, until a brilliant local rigger pointed out a trick to stow the excess. Simply stow the excess before inserting the bottom toggle keeper, so that the riser remains flexible enough to bend lengthwise creating slack in the elastic. Once he pointed this out, I liked the stowing method more than others because it seems more secure.
Infinity risers are generally well regarded from what I've heard. They seem well made, and have an interesting toggle where the keeper tabs are just a piece of the toggle webbing doubled up and folded, so that when you remove the toggles from the stows, the keepers disappear, I believe to keep stuff from getting snagged on them.

The stowing of the excess brake line is the only bad thing i have to say about the whole rig!! ( but i am quickly getting used to it) The dive loops however are awesome!!
I'm in the process of trying to get a colour scheme sorted for my soon to be ordered Wings... to help me to that end, does anyone have a decent picture of a Wings with yellow and/or neon yellow cordura?
Thinking about having some yellow on mine, but don't know which will look better.
Cheers!

What is it that you don't like about them? I thought it was a bit tricky to get the line in there at first, but after a couple of pack jobs I found it very easy to use.
Here' s mine... It's a W5-2 ext with the combination of a Crossfire2 129 & a Speed2000 135 reserve (which packs like a PD 106R)! Ankie and the staff have done a fantastic job and Scarlett seems to be the right person in her footsteps... Have a closer look at the trim tape thingy! Wings is just great and I'm about to order a 2nd container these days.
Already posted this in another thread but here is my new wings w-8. Rig has red thread throughout which is hard to see in pics. It also doesn't look grainey as in the pics nice and SMOOTH!

Just got mine. fits like a glove, and looks better in real life than what this lousy picture quality is showing. Fits a 210 main and 218 reserve. Thanks Wings!
It arrived on my doorstep about 2 days before the quoted ship date, so it was finished about a week early. I can't recall when I sent in my order, but it was 3 months ago maybe? I dunno. It will be worth the wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very very nice white wings container... always the best looking.
Just curious, how would one go about PLFing on such a nice container? Can you clean them or would it be doomed to eventually turning into a brown/green mess?

Normally.
Scotch Guard makes mud less likely to get absorbed and the rig can be washed after it gets dirty.
Sliding in and really grinding dirt+grass into white leg straps is a different story though; they'll always be a bit stained after you do that.

I wasn't able to order my Wings a few months ago when I wanted, but am going to within the next few weeks. Was thinking of one of hte attached colour schemes, for the simple minimalistic style. Liked the look of them until it was pointed out that the coloured bits could possibly be seen to look like a penis! Now I'm not sure about getting this colour scheme!!! Am I just being paranoid and it'll be ok once made, or will I end up being known as the guy with the penis rig?!
So the red bottom part of the container, with the red main flap and red centre midflap stripe doesn't have the look too much like a penis?! I hate the person who pointed it out to me. I didn't see it at all once I made the design, but now it's all I see!!!
I just got a new vision in a few weeks ago. Hopefully I can get it assembled soon!
PS-- I wanted to add that I LOVE the back/leg padding they are offerering now. For anybody who is ordering a new one soon, it's well worth the money!!!!

Bollocks. Just realised I put the wrong image in my last post. My rig is the one on the right of this attached file. But it will be a vision, not a regular wings.
I'm ecstatic about it. Unpacked and repacked a few times, checked it over...walked around the house in it for a while haha. It's my first rig, and custom at that. Super happy.
About 14 weeks wait total but it was worth. It feels very comfy and I can't wait to jump it next week.
Got some of the following bells 'n whistles:
3d spacer foam articulated harness rsl partial tie-dye kill-line zp pc hook knife on mudflap
Hope you guys like the design!
Not sure how the attachment thing works so here are a few links if the images don't attach right:
Absolutely love the black and white... but what's with the fluro green marbling
Just curious, as I've nearly achieved my A and looking at buying a new rig soon... what size container/canopies did you get?
Did you "estimate" what you would downsize to in 14 weeks, or were you jumping that size when you placed the order?
fluro green marbling = awesome tie-dye! i think it compliments the rig
the container harness is custom made to my measurements and is considered a W12 i believe (still need to write down my s/n's and details before SkyFest). the main I have is a 160 Triathlon and I also have a 172 Amigo reserve.
there is plenty of space to downsize. I am currently packing with my d-bag lines down rather than towards the bottom. If i downsize I can just place the d-bag the "regular" way. and if i downsize even more I can just shorten up the closing loop as needed.
when i sent them the order I was jumping a 189 saffire 2, but I had purchased the triathlon already and was working towards jumping it. on the order form I specified the 160 for my main so they could design with that in mind. manufacturers know that we downsize relatively quickly in our first couple of hundred jumps so it's taken into account with the design.

My advice would not be to "estimate" anything. I would seriously jump rental gear until you found something you were comfortable on and could see yourself jumping for a little while. My friend bought brand spankin' new gear after he got his A license, and by the end of the year and 3-400 jumps later, he was stuck with 220 square foot of canopy above his head because he didn't want to get rid of the new gear that matched his custom suit and all. Not only that, but you also don't want to buy gear you'll "grow into." Don't let buying new gear make you downsize too fast and hurt yourself. You'll also be able to jump different manufactueres and different canopies while renting gear, and this will help you decide what you want to spend the big bucks on when you order your own.

Yeah it's a pickle of a situation...
I'm just thinking... 100 - 150 jumps a year.
Container for 190 / 170 (170 being 1.0 wingloading for my weight).
Safe on the 190 off A with coaching, 170 is a nice sized canopy to cut my teeth for a few hundred jumps.
I got no need to go fast, I got really buggered joints (knee's/ankles) from previous sports.
All the new guys at my dropzone though are hammering through the canopy sizes... 170 after A, straight to 150 ~50 jumps, looking at going at a 120 soon after that.
They keep telling me I'll regret buying such a large container...
Well back to the drawing board, still got A LOT to think about... and a lot of trying different canopies.
My advice is to buy second hand for the first 100 or so jumps and when youre ready to downsize you can buy custom. The money you save on rental gear will go towards new gear and if you take care of your used rig it will maintain most of its resale value and it also can go towards your new gear.
At 25 per rental x 100 jumps is 2500 towards new gear minus 1500 you paid for the used (which you can resell for 1000 to 1200) you will most definitely come out ahead. "Rental" for the first year of jumping will be ~300-500 instead of 2500 that is just gone...
Another bonus is after being around for a while you will have time to feel out gear, demoing new canopies and other gear. Jumping a demo after you have experience in the sport will be more meaningful to you than jumping different canopies and not having the knowledge base to discern the difference between canopy A and B.
oh, and a 8-2ext with a sabre 150 and a speed 150!
wow. what's up with Wings container sizing? I have a wings w8-2 ext as well, and a PD126R is a brick in it. and 120 main is definitely the biggest i could fit in it (97-107 was a much better fit)
That's one of the big advantages of the Speed 2000 - it uses a rather new fabric which packs smaller/tighter (if you want to call 6+years on the market "rather new"). Canopies can vary significantly in packing volume, I used to jump a Paratec Faqtor 120 (326 cui IIRC) and now jump a Crossfire2 119 - which packs at 275 (or 270 something). Factors may be reinforcing tapes etc. that add to overall material (vo;ume) but not surface area. If you'd like to know more it may be worth starting a new thread, as this wouldn't really have anything to do with the Wings rigs people own anymore.

An updated pic of everything that got assembled yesterday. Hasn't even been jumped yet!
Wings Vision W-8.
PS-- this is a little off topic, but has anybody else been effected by the service bulliten they just put out? I was going to have my rigger take the plasic out of the main closing flap yesterday and we decided to hold off. I don't know what to do.
------ Edited to add -------- Another question... has anybody had problems with stiff ring covers? I feel like mine are so stiff and broad that even when I'm not moving they are hurting the inside part of my arm where they are rubbing up against it. I'm a little bruised just by taking it on and off at the rigger yesterday!

You got to be kidding if you think i am giving you the guy i grew up with this rig before i slide it in a few times.
Seriously, i think it looks really good, exactly how we imagined it. The tye-dye came out well and the pattern kind of looks like a phoenix sort of logo or an angel or something.
Maybe we should not have gone with the pinstripes but that is just a matter of difference i think.
Anyway nice rig bro. I just need to think if you owe me any money from the days when we were teenagers before i send it to you. I'm sure you owe me some gas money from back in the day or something.

Haven't done anything regarding the service bulletin yet...want to hear more opinions on this...
As far as the stiff ring covers...I had the same issue when I got my wings. Put about 40 jumps on it at skyfest and by the end, not only did the rings not bug me anymore but the whole thing fit like a glove! It's just the rig being new and stiff...put a bunch of jumps on it and see if it still bugs you.
I'm thinking of getting a wings rig with mostly royal blue cordura and a few blue and yellow tie dye panels. Does anyone have a pic of a design in this direction?
Wings Vision. W1-2. EXT. Velocity 90 main, Optimum113 reserve. I have a Wings W1-3 with a 109-M reserve and a Xaos 89 main, but that thing is 5 years old is is so well used.
My new vision is a work of art. Cut in laterals, spacer foam, dual pillows, articulated, you name it. It fits like a glove and is about an inch shorter then my Wings-3. Both these rigs are so small I could forget I had them on.
These rigs are so nice, Thats why I'm a dealer.
Edited by amazingly hot and fabulous fiancee to include pictures.

I seem to recall having a rather large collection of pictures of such an event. Oddly enough though, they were always focused on one individual contributor. Attractive one at that.
Just got my new Wings thanks to Bigway of the KarnageKrew!!
Can't wait to jump it. Been so use to wearing a hceap and cheerful, no frills rig that I had gotten used to that, and this one suddenly feels weird, but it looks so much nicer! I'm sure as the material relaxes it will start to feel like I was mad putting up with a container that only just fitted!!
Only minor complaint is that the pinstripes on the midflaps don't go all the way to the top of the red midflap stripe, but both stop about 4mm short. Would have been nice to not see the end, but other than that I'm well happy!
Well, except for the brand new Pilot being one hell of a bitch to pack!!
Go Bigway and the KarnageKrew - highly recommended!!

I don't have any pictures of just my rig. So here's some in air pics.. doesn't do the rig justice.. ill post some pics of just the rig as soon as I get the cypres (out for service) and the reserve back in it.
Wings in May has a military discount that cannot be beat!
50% off all gear AND options PLUS free lateral cut-ins. You can get any rig with all the bells and whistles for less than the price of a regularly priced rig.
Check out your dealer or, if you're military, deal directly with Sunrise
We are offering for the month of May 50% off the retail BASE RATE ONLY. This DOES NOT include options to all military (active or retired) police officers, fire fighters and EMT's as our way of saying THANKS for helping to keep us safe!!!!!
I wish we could afford to offer 50% off the options too, but a girl has gotta eat too!
Contact your nearest dealer or if in the USA, you may contact Sunrise directly, although we prefer if you go through your local/nearest dealer. There will be no difference in price whether you go through us or a dealer and this discount can apply to our already running special on stock rigs.
Of course the monthly special applies as well and that include FREE cut in laterals, a savings of $150
Since this was posted in here I wanted to make sure that people have the correct information. Thanks!
I have wings, I like wings. Compared with my old dolphin I get this differences: - I can move and run more easy. My wings is articulated. - It stays (doesn't splip) on my upper body even when the chest strap is not routed. - It feels confortable on the upper body with a lose or tight chest strap. - I can arch even when I tighten my chest strap a lot. - I didn't put a spandex BOC and now I regret it. The B. Germain pilot packing method that is anti horse shoe doesn't help with my current BOC. If I extract my bridle at a certain angle (left) it will create a bump in the pilot chute. This worked pretty well on my dolphin. - I can't jump it anymore because my friends are telling me that I'm going to die or kill someone with the bad velcro I have on the reserve handle. The reserve handle poped out of velcro in freefall and now nobody whants to jump with me ... and I understand them. I wish I could fix the damn velcro or a senior rigger but no... I have to get to the master rigger for a velcro job.
all I can say is thanks for making my attempts to colour my pending order of a Wings Vision all the much harder!
Some awesome looking rigs, so thanks for the inspiration! I did like that black and grey tiedye! Will order my wings/pilot package and upload in a couple months!!! :-)
Love it. It's my first rig - huge props to the crew at both Sunrise Manufacturing and at ChutingStar, they took some serious time to answer all my questions and help me out.
Had to try it all on and make sure everything matches - can't wait to jump it

Don't mean to be a buzz kill, but just be careful of your leg strap webbing rubbing on the webbing going to the container back. You're left handed?
I jump a wings and love it! I think now they make the pilot chutes without that pesky single connection point, too.

I just found out the size is a W-5 with a PD Optimum 143 and a brand new Nitron 135. I am so freakin excited.
Will post pics soon as it gets put together.
Question for all W-5 owners:
How do you like yours??? Is the rig comfy and out of the wind? Problems with particular canopies fitting? Anything I should know before hand?
Mine has wingsuit mods, cut-in laterals, articulated, blah blah blah
Can't WAIT
Hi,
I own a W-5 and a W-2. Love´em both! Perfect body fit and super comfotable in and out of sky. I love how it hold its shape when closed. W-5 has a VX-94sqft which fits pretty good. The W-2 has a XAOS 21 - 98sqft that also fits good but a lil tighter.

Thanks for the advice! Nothing was really tightened down in that picture, I just had to see how it all looks together. I'll tighten down the leg straps tonight and see if it rubs.
You guys rock with the military discounts! thank you for all you do for the "public servants of the world"
I got mine a few months back and its been completely freakin amazing except for the fact that I didnt realize how lazy my pulls were until I got the cordura BOC. WOW!! gotta be real deliberate on them but, its actually a good thing ! thanks again beautiful looks, design and fit!! our DZ is seeing a wings frenzy these days, I would say a third of our rigs are Wings.. which does bring up a new problem.. with all the new Wings rigs, mine isnt the sexiest any more!! great job Guys!! love the rig

Here's mine. Got it from the classifieds here. Previous owner shipped it for inspection. S&TA, also a rigger, did pre-purchase inspection and 180day repack on it. Got my A license stamp on 9 Mar ( Safety Day ) and was able to make my first A licensed jump, on my first rig, on my first Safety Day.
Not as colorful as many of the ones I see here, but I'm thrilled to have my own gear to use instead of student rigs. The harness fits well and the canopies are a decent size for me.
Also got an Alti-Track, gear bag and stand in the deal as well.
I had that configuration. You CAN do it but it was tight. The thing felt like a brick on my back and never really looked right. I changed to an Optimum 160. That works so much better. My suggestion is to either get the Optimum or go with a larger sized reserve container.
To be fair, my PDR was an older one. I think it was in the first year or so that they started using microline instead of Dacron. I don't know this but I suspect that this one packed a little bit bigger than the current PDRs.
In reply to:
Anyone here have a W11 with a PDR 160 in it?? I want to see how the reserve fits before I buy it .. Is it loose around the risers?!? Thanks!!
