How old were you? Can't Post

I will be turning 33 in about 2 weeks. I did a tandem jump for the first time 2/15 and fell in love with the feeling of freefall so I signed up for AFF and did my first student jump 3/16.. I've completed through level 4 and plan on completing 5 and 6 this weekend <--- excited, yes!! I'm just curious about how many others have started this sport past the 30 mark. :)

I was 32 I think. To lazy to do the math.

1800 jumps and one crushed vertebra later here I am at 46. Not active in the sport now. Still jump once in a while and run a boogie once a year.

Crushed vertebrae?! Is this why you're not as active in the sport anymore?

Thousands. Not unusual at all.

Many people who want to get into the sport earlier in life can't, because they don't earn enough money yet. So it comes later in life when they're more secure financially.

I started at 25, but the majority of my jumps were made from 28 to 33 years of age, and I'm 45 now. The last 10 years have been sparsely populated with jumps here and there with a few long breaks. Being a home owner, husband, and father of two girls tends to get in the way. Wink

Several months ago on a different thread the question was asked by someone 50+. Many answered that were 50 or older when they started. 54 for me. Mid-30s, you are in the prime of your adult life. Keep your eye open for the first jump students at your DZ. Empty nest adults are not uncommon.

Had my first tandem last August, turned 32 in December and started AFF in January. Pleasantly surprising to see so many started later than us... I was mildly annoyed at myself after my first jump for not having done it a decade earlier, but hey at least I didn't start a decade later, right? Tongue

Why can't I win the lottery? Oh, there is no lottery in AL :/

Just open a bank account and every time you would have bought a lotto ticket, put a dollar in the bank account instead. If you planned to buy 1 lotto ticket a week, at the end of the year you'll have $52 more than you would have if you'd done that.

If you have other bad habits (Smoking comes to mind) you could kick them and put those funds into that bank account, too. It adds up pretty quickly. Spend a buck a day on a vending machine soda? That's a really good candidate for that, too (And another $365 at the end of the year.)

I did my first skydive in July of last year, at 42. I'm 100 jumps in now. Making up for lost time. I did try hang gliding back in the 90's, so a life of adventure wasn't completely unknown to me.

Better than just giving it away, and that's assuming you stop at one $1 ticket a week.

Kick a pack-a-day smoking habit and put that $5 for the pack of ciggies in the bank instead, you'd be $1800 richer at the end of the year. Once you actually get in the habit of doing it and realize how quickly it's accumulating, it gets to be easier to sqirrel a little more away every now and again. Pretty soon you have enough for a new rig (Or a down payment on a house...)

'Course if I had $1800 sitting in savings, I'd start thinking maybe I should make that money work harder for me than it would be in a savings account, and start looking for under-valued stock. Maybe get in on the ground floor with some diesel powered nuns!

quite different for Me...Smile

I had just turned 19, and was in college

I went to a state college, so tuition AND room & board expenses had not YET gotten out of hand.....AND skydiving was pretty inexpensive...
I had been working summers and vacations since I was 16,, actually FOURteen.....so I had SOME disposable income..
( and we ALL know, that skydiving is a fine place to DISPOSE of it..) CoolWink

At the time , all there was,,,,, was static line and my first SIX jumps, including gear, training, and lift tickets, cost me 96 dollars !!! LaughCool no joke.. 50 bucks for # 1 then 10 dollars each for the next 4 SLs and SIX bucks for # 1 freefall.... it was 1972

Still active,,, and always have been... BUT todays economy might have easily discouraged me.... had I waited, and come up with the current training options, gear, curriculum, and related costs...
VERY glad of 2 things... That I started when I DID,, and that I can still enjoy our sport...SmileCool

My first jump was AFF and I was 19. The training was paid for by me, at the time a young apprentice. No rich parents paying my way or putting me in a tunnel... nt that I'm jealous or anything Wink

... but then I stopped jumping as I couldn't afford it anymore on a measly wage. Couldn't jump often enough to progress.

Now I'm earning more and after a break of 6-7 years the sky has been calling my name louder aand louder as every year has passed and so I'm coming back this year!

Renewed my membership, ordered a new container, booked 2 weeks off work and flights for a skydiving holiday later in the year.

Well if I counted the 9 jumps I did when I was 16 then I've been at this for 11 years, however I had a break and got back into it 2007 doing S/L on roundies Tongue then back into freefall 2009/2010. So really only 3 years of FF.

First tandem at 52.

Competed at nationals at 56, 57 and 62.

First wingsuit jump at 59

got a tandemjump as a birthday present on my 26th but didnt used it instead i upgraded that ticket into an AFF-course :P

for me the tandem was just to expensive and i wanted to jump on my own, i dont like the idea beeing stuck to someone in the air and dont have control on my own, the adrenalin rush i got on my level1 was the best i got EVER i was smiling for 3 days.

also had some nonjumping years cause i was living in the alps and set the priority to paragliding, im workin on more jumps ;)

While I had my 1st tandem at 14 and did my AFF while 16-17 I then dropped out of the sport. I did another handful of jumps through my 20's, but it wasn't until just recently at the age of 34 that I've felt the drive to really throw myself into the sport completely.

I made my first jump when I was 29 . I have jumped in my twenties, my thirties, my forties, my fifties, my sixties and my seventies. My last jump was a couple of months before I turned 80. I think I have made the rounds, and dont expect to make anymore. A man's health can only take so much abuse, and I have had more than my share.

Re: [fell4skydiving] How old were you? [In reply to] Can't Post

Congrats on jumping and signing up! I started last year, and I am almost at the big Five-Oh mark. Sky diving is the greatest thing I have done in my life. I have never felt better. All the stretching I do now so I can be better at RW has made all of my back problems go away. I eat better now, try and get more sleep so I can be at me best on every jump. When I think of how I was before I started sky diving, and how much happier I am now, I fell very fortunate to have followed my dreams of flying and found this amazing way of being. I can't imagine not have sky diving in my life. I will jump as long as I can physically sky dive. In 15 years when I retire, I know I will be jumping every chance I get.
Best regards,

Chris

Did a tandem 5/26/12 at 52. Faxed my "B" paperwork in 5/11/13 with 85 jumps. (Was to cold for water training before that) Just starting to get competent at understanding what the experienced jumpers are explaining so I can learn more about this sport and looking forward to many more jumps.

I started when I was 17. Skydiving has been a huge positive in my life. I wouldn't have met the love of my life and had half the adventures I've had without it. Cool

Same here...except I was 18 when I started.

Met a lot of amazing people, done a lot of fantastic things ~ my first jump course cost me 55.00, easily the best investment in my future that I ever made!! Cool

Re: [fell4skydiving] How old were you? [In reply to] Can't Post

33 when I started (42 now). I'm torn about wishing I'd done it earlier. On the one hand, I think I could better weather the bumps and bruises and other random stresses on my body if I were younger. On the other hand, I appreciate the fact that I have a career (and income) that allows me to participate as actively as I do without needing to work in the sport to finance it. It lets me keep skydiving as pure fun rather than something I have to do.

I also feel like starting when I did, I was mature enough to approach it with the right combination of fearless and fearful. In my teens and 20s, I was fearful of the wrong things - fearful of what others thought of me, fearful of failing, etc. That might have led me to make different choices in skydiving, rather than making the right choices for me. Coming into it when I did, I'm much more willing to be fearless about my choices, which are pretty conservative. I don't let peer pressure talk me into doing something I'm not comfortable with. I respect the sport, and I respect my own limitations, and try my best to skydive within those limitations.

Re: [NWFlyer] How old were you? [In reply to] Can't Post

NWFlyer : I like your attitude that you expressed. I have seen too many who were lead into things they were not qualified to handle. I have seen some who got all geared up, and after climbing to altitude, the door was opened and they froze. They went down with the aircraft, which was better than jumping with a heart filled with fear of the unknown, but they should never have gotten to the jumprun situation in the first place. They were sadly misled.
Your self respect of your limitations is a good thing, especially when you are comfortable inside that you are doing your own thing....your way.
Nice post you made NWFlyer.

Tandem at age 55, did AFF a couple of months after that. That was 2 years & 230 jumps ago. I'm clearly not as flexible and don't have the reaction times I did when I was in my twenties, but I'm still having a hell of a good time Smile

I'm starting AFF as soon as I graduate high school which is in 20 days, will take a year off, get another job, and make as many jumps as possible. I just need to find a good DZ near me to start the AFF course, Sky's the limit in PA is a good one but it's too far and I don't get my license until september, I wish I could go to Sky dive the ranch but it's too far.
