Its a goodamned shame everytime I hear some new student/wuffo talk about watching a video of a guy skydiving without a rig to know they're not talking about this jump but about that redbull drinking biker twat.

No there's no need to hero worship, and he was just being a grumpy old fart.
That said it is nice to know milestone people and general trivia.
Tiny Broadwick Tom Piras (good reference for never being too good to die) Joe Kittenger Dan Poynter, bill booth, Ted strong Your AFF instructor!
It's not about hero worship it's about having some clue as to the history and pioneers of the sport many proclaim to love.
True, but nowadays the two get muddled up often. Look at the posts after yours regarding Travis...
But as far as getting grumpy about people not knowing them, whats the point? I'm a skydiving addict and obsess over the sport, other people its just something they do to get laid

There are plenty of names in the sport, but the ones that mean the most are those who continue to act as coaches, organizers, instructors, riggers, mentors and guides. The people who have consistently been there -- at the DZ -- helping others over 10, 20 and even 30 years.
They may have names like John, Phil, Sky, Cliff or Sandy. They are at your DZ. Get to know those people by name.

LOL! I bet you're now sorry you asked. I count over 50 bios you "should" now go look up.
IMO, it's way more important for us to know, for example, how our 3-ring works then to know that Bill Booth invented it. IOW, the knowledge they uncovered, the lessons learned, the techniques developed, etc, are what are important.
Which is not to say that knowledge of the history of the pioneers in the sport (or the current list of top swoopers, etc) is necessarily uninteresting and/or without value, but it's more of a cultural element of the sport.

Ah, but if you know that Bill invented it - and you know what he looks like - when you run into him at a skydiving event, you can ask him any question you might have about it. Can't do that if you don't know who he is, can ya?
Other names to know - Kate Cooper Tony Domenico Al Frisby Carol Clay Purusha (Patty) Crocitto Deanna Kent Bill Newell Ray Cottingham Soss
