List of Jumpers I Should Have Heard of...? Can't Post

Back when I started the sport, an older jumper mentioned to me that he found it annoying that a lot of the younger jumpers didn't recognize (or hadn't heard of) distinguished jumpers from the past and even the present.
In your opinion, is there a list of skydivers you think all of us should be familiar with? Who are they? (Aside from yourself, of course Wink...

Re: [Namowal] List of Jumpers I Should Have Heard of...? [In reply to] Can't Post

There's a couple lists.

- Historical:

Sanborn, Istel, Ottley, Morehead, White. There are others, but those are the first that come to mind.

- Pioneers, but a little more recent:

Bill Booth, Ted Strong, Dan Poynter. Again, there are others.

- Champions:

Dan BC, Kirk Verner, Rook and Missy Nelson, Eli Thompson. Again, many many others.

Camera:

Norman Kent, Joe Jennings, Greg Gasson, Brian Buckland. Again, many others.

One good reason to know who the "names" are is because a few of them post on here.
And sometimes people don't quite realize who they are. It can get a "bit" amusing.

http://www.dropzone.com/...post=3409804#3409804

And don't forget the most famous of all skydivers...

DB Cooper Angelic

Who else has a thread of over 1000 pages (pages, not posts).

Yeah, I was thinking of including the "Learn from their lessons" category, both dead and alive.

It would include the Madd Skilz crowd like you listed, but it could also include those who pushed the limits just a bit too far.
Patrick De Guyon, Shane McConkey, Eli, JT and others.

There are plenty of names in the sport, but the ones that mean the most are those who continue to act as coaches, organizers, instructors, riggers, mentors and guides. The people who have consistently been there -- at the DZ -- helping others over 10, 20 and even 30 years.

They may have names like John, Phil, Sky, Cliff or Sandy. They are at your DZ. Get to know those people by name.

LOL! I bet you're now sorry you asked. I count over 50 bios you "should" now go look up.

IMO, it's way more important for us to know, for example, how our 3-ring works then to know that Bill Booth invented it. IOW, the knowledge they uncovered, the lessons learned, the techniques developed, etc, are what are important.

Which is not to say that knowledge of the history of the pioneers in the sport (or the current list of top swoopers, etc) is necessarily uninteresting and/or without value, but it's more of a cultural element of the sport.

If you meant Pat Moorehead, he just did 80 jumps on his 80th birthday, so he's still going strong.

Rook Nelson won gold in both VFS and FS at this year's nationals (as well as a silver in FS to go along with them) and organized the head down world record last summer.

What does my jump numbers have to do with it? Im just saying, Travis (along with a handful of other noteables) literally revolutionized the sport of freestyle motocross the same way many names mentioned on this thread have revolutionized skydiving or BASE. I have to plead my ignorance with a lot of the names mentioned here, I got some homework to do, but to imply Travis' achievements in his field(s) dont mean as much to his sport as BC's do in his sport is just unfair.

Your jump numbers have nothing to do with it. That whooshing you hear is the point of your comment going right on over Doug's punkin haid.

Moreover, you have a better handle on the title of this thread than a whole bunch of peeps with thousands of jumps who have no clue, given the names they're listed (almost all of which are popular and/or well-known).

I concur, BTW; Travis is a big-time extreme sportsman who briefly touched parachuting among his many other sporting exploits.

Another along the same lines is Shane McConkey. Check HIM out when you do your homework. He not only created a special kind of BASE jumping that continues to this day, he invented a ski that utterly changed the way peeps approach powder... plus he was one of the baddest skiers ever to have carved tracks through virgin snow and mogul fields alike.

I believe with all the skydivers in the sport now and all the different disciplines, it all depends on the discipline you choose.

That being said this was a thread about names of jumpers we should have heard of because of their skydiving exploits and contributions. And if you are going to compare apples to apples Travis contribution to the sport, although very heavily youtubed and promoted, doesn't compare to any of the other names I see on this list.

And we're seeing a lot of names put out here now that are more local-hero in nature. But this thread is rather about nationally recognized names, so I don't think those really fit here. Not to say that the local-heros don't deserve recognition, heck, they do - they're the backbone of this sport - those guys who are out there every weekend training students and dispensing wise advice. There are thousands of those unsung heros. But they're not going to be known outside their local area, and wouldn't appear here in this list.

Gary Dupuis inventor of AFF and Tandem
Rocky Evans and Ken Coleman, Co developers of AFF
Richard “Fang” Fenimore
In the late 1980’s I was very fortunate to begin my aviation career at the sleepy old airport across the street from where I was going to high school. At the age of 15 I was very much interested in aviation and the Civil Air Patrol at the time but I just wasn’t getting the in the air time that I wanted. Flagler Aviation was the FBO on the field and they were being bought out by a skydiving operation run by Rocky and Fang. Along with aircraft rental and maintenance they were a full service DZ. I somehow got hooked up with these guys. My intention was to work for them so I could learn to fly but instead they taught me how to skydive and so much more. I somehow ended up taking off aircraft inspection panels, degreasing aircraft engines and scrubbing toilets for this company. Learning to fly would have to wait but what I learned helped me become who I am today.
Gary taught me how to work on airplanes. I never knew him as a skydiver but many of the things he did made the sport what it is today. I would like to share more about Gary and I hope to write more about him in the future.
When I was 16 Fang did my first jump as a tandem. Yup, totally illegal but Fang is dead and I was a minor so fuck off FAA! Fang gave me the name Dave the Slave for all the subservient work I did around the DZ. Fang did video for a James Bond film and was quite accomplished in his skydiving career. Unfortunately Fang met an early demise http://www.ntsb.gov/aviationquery/brief.aspx?ev_id=20001207X04307&key=1
Rocky carries on the legacy of Ken Coleman by bringing AFF to be the best way to become a skydiver. Rocky was the sole survivor of the balloon crash that claimed Ken’s life. Rocky recently wrote about it and I highly recommend his book “Truth” http://www.amazon.com/Truth-Rocky-Evans/dp/1462066151/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352024968&sr=8-1&keywords=truth+rocky+evans

Leo Valentin

Discovered and taught the stable freefall position (not the only person to do so but he didn't have the benefit of the internet to learn from other people's knowledge)

Successfully jumped several times with rigid wings. Unfotunately died during an unsuccessful wing jump.

Well, when I google "Jerry Bird" I find a musician, a basketball player, and a murderer. Which one do I pick?

That's why we need to have a synopsis of what they're famous for.

Hi

Sorry I first heard about JerryBird from reading about him in Parachutist Mag. in the late 60's.

Had the pleasure of meeting and jumping with him in the 80's.

I don't feel qualified to write a synopsis of everything Jerry Bird did for RW or the SPORT.Blush

Help!!!!!!!

R.

I haven't seen Jake Brake mentioned. Lots of film credits for stunts and "specialty" rigging and acting dating back over 20 years. Earlier contributions to R&D and testing. Golden Knight. Has quietly done a lot of amazing stuff with little recognition, even within the skydiving community.

How about Mike Truffer, long-time publisher of the pull-no-punches "Skydiving" news magazine, providing independent reporting that gave much more than just the official news from "Parachutist". I still miss it.

Dude, there is only 1 important skydiver and that is you. Skydiving is a very personal sport and we all get out of it what we put in.

So, decide what you want and make sure you stay alive to tell the stories.

Another legend & very interesting character is Joe Smith.

I remember seeing his ads in Parachutist back when I first started skydiving.

Scary looking d00d with the catchy tag-line:

Would You Buy A Parachute From This Man?

Saw him but never met at a Herd boogie in the 70's, - you could tell he had 'it' the way everyone gravitated toward him.

Finally met Joe through Shorty, Joe joined our Demo team and we became very good friends...very smart man with an amazing history.

He Herd! Cool

Sir, you are right on!
When I was 15, in 1958, I first hung out with my friend Gary Somma at the old Valley Forge Airport, until about 1960, went I went into the Army and took up mil parachuting then became an aviator and made countless drops. My parents never gave permission for me to do sport jumping, so I went military, but I have wonderful memories of that time. Precious memories of Steve Snyder and his beautiful Studebaker Golden Hawk, stories Steve told us of setting the canopy on fire during first attempts in the garage with his auto reserve. During that time at Valley Forge, I didn't realize Snyder and Hillard had made the first US baton pass, because I never saw Charlie jump. Charlie was always the guy who made the drops. Charlie had just won his first aerobatic championship. Yes, it was Hillard, not Hilliard, a common error. Seems like yesterday. I believe it was Steve's wife who taught me how to pack chutes. Great experience for a kid. Yes, all those great people and more are out there. I stumbled on this site because I made my military "cherry" jump with SF at Lakehurst in 1965 and Lakewood came up on the search. Awesome memories.

Joe Smith was one of my heros. I met him when I was 5 years old when he jumped at York Sport Parachute Center in York PA in the late sixties. I was a DZ brat and Joe was a leader. He always had cool stuff and was constantly tweaking and modifing parachute equipment. I bought my first rig from him. But what he was most famous for was his conection to that Hossenfus guy giving arms to the Contras. I never did hear the real story from Joe, but the Feds were all over Joe after Hossenfus's plane went down. It made the headlines world wide if I remember correctly. Ollie North probably knows the truth.
