The chick in this story has a major issues with mile high skydiving, she's a hater! (and taking notes on other dz's in the us)
Not only is she a nutcase, her and most her followers are clueless on how the national airspace system works and who is in charge of rule making and standards. This is a great example of how one or two very misinformed people can cause a lot of problems for people in wasted time and money by a business and by the city/FAA to deal with them.
And you guys thought farmer Mcnasty was bad.

"Mile-Hi has been doing jumps at the airport since 1995. But it's only recently that complaints about its noise have taken off. In 2010, the airport got 488 calls complaining about the skydiving (332 of them from three people, according to records). This year, Barth said, calls are on track to surpass 400 again."
Wow! Three people, one (pictured) moved in after the DZ opened and is only using the DZ so she can stop the runway extension!

The comments under the news story start to show the agenda.
This is like the yahoos near SFO who started to complain about the heavies every ten minutes, flying over their property in Foster City.
The Airport was operating in the 50's (?), Foster City was a wet marsh till the 70's, then filled in and built over a period of ten years, the yahoos moved in around the late 80's. They wanted SFO to change the flight patterns or close down. Right.

Yes she is a bitch. I have had first hand dealings with her when i operated out of Boulder. Primarily she is a loon with no grip on reality however that also describes many of the Boulder residents. I also was forced to look into a restraining order against her because she would harass my bus drivers while they were in the landing area. I lost one of my landing areas thanks to her threatening to sue everyone for the "painful noise" she had to endure.
Fortunately the owners of the property she got me kicked out of found us another one right across the street from the one i had and even closer to her house than the previous with the added bonus being the new owner hates everyone (besides us). She has threatened to sue me more times then i can count however she is all talk. I did everything i could to make her happy including running the plane at as low of a power setting as possible starting 3 miles away from her house while also monitoring the noise from the ground with a decibel meter only to realize the plane was actually quieter than the birds on the ground. Any way i digress. Think i might have to attend this meeting just to irritate her some.

I don't call her a bitch for voicing her point of view, I would call her a bitch for having that look on her face in the photo, she just looks like a bitch and based on the news stories and her own words, I would in fact have to say she, Kimberly Gibbs -- with Citizens for Quiet Skies, is in fact a bitch.
Now she lives in Dade City, Look out Dolphin and Z-hills next thing you'll know she will be after you too, then the rest of FL.

Better for it to be from non-skydiving planes, not based at that local airport, from all around the area, making low passes over her house over and over again, even late at night. The message would be, back off or you'll wish for the quiet skies you used to have. Her neighbors would also be pushing for her to stop making trouble.

Quote from one of the petitioners:
"This is driving people out of the area--we bought our home less than a year ago and want to move b/c of the destruction of our peace and quiet by this one company. They should be cited for disturbing the peace and shut down. Anyone else producing that kind of noise would be!"
It's attitudes like this that drive me crazy. Why the heck buy into a neighborhood that you clearly don't like, and then complain about the neighbors who were there for years before you?
As to marking it spam, something to consider is the " flag this petitioner as inappropriate" If everyone who reads this thread went and marked everyone of the signatures inappropriate -- just saying A wrench in the works? I'm not sure how it works, but wouldn't it at least send a message that not everyone is in agreement?
Very good. Her neighbors may be the best weapon to push her to get back to the level of quiet skies they enjoy now. It would be great to know that a fly-over-thon will happen.

Let's see. Mile High is an established, successful business w/a 15+ year history in the community. Who do you think generates more tax revenues, the big business, or some dumb bitch in a house? They formed an official group. So, the town is required to hear them squawk @a meeting or two. Money Talks. The town council cares a lot more about keeping that business operating, than a few bored nutcases. She won't get anything more than a new ulcer or two.

Map attached, so you can visualize the situation. The Mile-Hi airport is circled, and the complainent's home is at the red star. Not exactly like she lives right off the end of the runway...
It actually looks to be about 5 miles from the airport, straight-line distance, but this dingbat seems to be using road driving distance, which doesn't apply to airplanes. Doh! But even at 5-miles, the Otter is going to already be at, oh, about 6 or 7 thousand feet by then.

I hope that you all realize that using name calling tactics like calling her a 'dimwit' and a 'bitch' in a forum that is fairly easily accessed by the general public really paints skydivers as a whole in a terrible light. Argue with her stance, her fanatacism, her logic, etc, but name-calling only makes those using those terms look really juvenile.

Hi SS
The female mcnasty is is persistent and is looking at all the angles.
To the extreme of suggesting her group boycott businesses in town that are listed as friends of the DZ,
Sounds like its time to remind Longmont how much money the jumpers from mile hi are spending in their town.
We used to have a ink twin otter stamp, and a skydiver stamp. Before we went on a jumping holiday we used to stamp our money so the locals would know how much business the DZ is bringing into town. Skyding Dollars
Eventually some of the locals in longmont could end up with some "skydiving dollars" when they get change from the local business's . Maybe even Mcnasty.
The DZ is bringing in a lot more money to Longmont than the rental fee on the hangers and the cost of fuel.
I suggest that you all take the high ground, act like mature adults and don't do anything stupid.
If I do something stupid it's not I'm trying to be Nastey it's because I'm old. This poor misguided Mcnasty is expending a lot of time and effort picking a fight that she isn't going to win

Around here- operating aircraft noise is exempted from the noise ordinances. Beware though- folks that have moved next to established (like 40+ years) shooting ranges have been able to close them for "noise". Depends on the local political climate more than 'logical' arguments.

Maybe so, but shooting ranges don't have the power (and money) of the FAA behind them. If the city made a move that threatened the FAA money that's supporting that airport, then they could count on losing most of the tax revenue from any business being done on the airport and in town by airport users.
Keep in mind the city is pushing for an expantion of the airport. The reason is that they want to attract more airport users and their money, and that the city doesn't have to spend anything to make it happen. The FAA will foot the bill, but that means they have the city by the balls. The city has to play by the FAAs rules, or the FAA takes it's money and runs.

I had a fun idea. Maybe not a good idea, but a fun idea. This would capitalize upon the theory that these complainers are calling in complaints after they hear the "jumpers away" call over the aviation radio scanner. What one might do is pick a weekend day with solid overcast when there are no jump operations in progress, and make false "jumpers away" calls every hour or so. Then on Monday go check the county log for complaints and note who called in. Then you take that to court to prove that these nuts are just calling in based upon radio calls, even when there was no actual jumping taking place, thereby proving that they're just harassment calls, not based upon actual noise.
There might be a problem with creating fake radio traffic, but there's no telling what someone with a hand held transceiver could do...

So her rebuttal to all the money skydivers bring to the community is that the airport is actually driving potential residents away at a greater rate than it's attracting them...somehow I doubt that lol.

Skydive DeLand did the same thing when the city wanted to put in a tower, but instead they made all payments out in $2 Bills, then at the city meeting they asked how many people had $2 bills used to make purchases in their business, and how many people got change for purchases in $2 bills.

Correct. Just because a loose canopy floats down on his property doesn't mean that it is his to keep. Likewise, if a motorist lost control on the road and spun off into his property, he wouldn't get to keep the car. Any property owner that tries to do so, deserves a visit by police to encourage them to return the property.

Actually, several years ago in the Netherlands near the airport of Zestienhoven (Rotterdam) it was found out that a group of complainers used the 'teletext' announcement of scheduled flights to file a complaint. This happened when a scheduled flight of a DC9 was cancelled in the last instant because of some technical difficulty. The complainers had learned that that particular airline used a DC9 and had also learned that a DC9 is a rather loud airplane. Therefore, they always filed an official complaint - not after actually hearing the plane fly overhead but from learning about its departure by means of 'teletext' (= text messages system on Tv-screens). Needles to say that they lost a lot of influence after being caught doing this (complaining with aircraft registration when in fact said aircraft was still on the tarmac in Zestienhoven)
So it is not only a fun idea - it might actually work.

Did anyone find out what happened at the city meeting? Any "result" or actions or pronouncementsat or following the meeting? Was theFAA in attendence? Short versions of who said what? Maybe I need to google Lonmont Times Call newspper to see if there was a follow up article that summarized what happened. If anything.

I watched the meeting on cable..... A) Overall very pro business and skydiving. B) Kim Gibs shot herself in the foot. Complaining that Mile-Hi was flying that morning when in fact we were not. C) FAA and Airport management gave a great presentation and proved that Mile-Hi was in the best location possible. No Laws have been broken. "Hush Kits" are not possible on twin otters are not possible. D) Within 24 hours of the meeting "Citizens for Quiet Skies" can no longer be found.
All and all a very positive result. It's quiet, maybe a little too quiet

Most people wouldn't break the law, but this sounds like a motivated group of individuals and they may try to take it into their own hands now that they see that the city won't do anything. Not to mention the questionable sanity of this group...

Not usually. At higher power settings the difference between the two is almost negligible, but at idle the four blades make a lot more noise and drag. For some aircraft the four bladed props are part of a short field landing kit.

Might be true in the civilian market but the C-130A models (First model) were well known for their 3 bladed props and extreme noise level.
We lucked out and did our time on the C-130E models one if the cchanges was 4 bladed props the noise level wasn't a problem.
The poor guy's on the 130A's had to wear ear plugs and head sets. Both birds were used for max effort landings and T.O..
We used to have a joke something like do you fly on 130A's ? with the response HUH like we were deaf.
Google is your friend the latest C130's I think are J models maybe four bladed props that look like a fish hook.Latest and the greatest... for now .

Well Emma,
For one thing I've never seen a propeller with a muffler installed on it before, in fact last time I checked there has not been one invented yet.... so there is your hot tip of the day.
Maybe you and Kim Gibbs should get together for tea and crumpets and start working on a design for the new space aged propeller with muffler combo, I'm sure not only would you both make a shit load of money, you both could put your minds together and find some other cause to bitch about.
BTW how did you get from FL to CO? Did you drive all the way?
Quote:

Here is a news flash for you: don't buy a house next to an airport if you don't like the noise airplanes make. Most of all due some research on the location of the home you wish to buy and make sure it's not right under the flight path to the runway approach corridor, maybe your friend Ms. Gibbs would be better off living next to a drag strip or nascar track, maybe a landfill, there is one of those on the east side of Longmont.

For a straightforward answer: For a million dollars or two, they could probably buy a different plane that is slightly quieter. That's about the best they can do. And for a given size range of aircraft, there are usually only 2 or 3 realistic options on the market at most, so there isn't much choice.
Airplane noise is regulated largely on a federal level, so that you don't get different rules in every different city.
The noise at a distance tends to be more a function of propeller tip speeds. To change things you'd have to change the whole engine and prop combination. No turbine aircraft has a muffler, and it probably wouldn't make a lot of difference.
If the aircraft is a Twin Otter, then that's already a relatively quiet aircraft...

I think her using that phrase is backwards. It should say, out of 1000 people she tries to convince, 1 person gives enough of a damn to identify with her and "like" her page on Facebook. And hence...9 people. Some people are just too dumb to think for themselves and will bite onto any cause that someone convinces them is valid.

It makes a lot of sense. They paid $300,000 for houses that would cost $600,000 down the road in Boulder away from the airport and turkey processing plant. If they can get the airport closed they'll have some of the benefit of spending more without breaking their budgets.
I would say so, the data alone seems to negate the argument. I wonder if the readings would be lower indoors, since one complaint was that the noise woke some one up and another was the horses in the barn happened to be disturbed.

Well, on the topic of "hot tips", there are prop tip designs that are significantly quieter than the normal prop, and significant advances in prop noise reduction has been made by using composite materials which allow thinner blades and more elaborate blade shapes. Getting FAA approval to retrofit, and finding the $$$, is another matter of course.

We didn't have to look up at the planes, we were on a hill and just had to look out there, the planes were almost at the same elevation, we could see the passengers looking out the windows, pilots in the cockpit and hear them adjust the throttles for the final glide slope We loved it.
Could we talk outside a when a plane was overhead? No way they were to low but in less thean a minute they were gone and we had what seemed like 3-5 minutes to talk before the next plane was coming in. Rush hr.
"The windows in the house actually vibrated" BS we lived in a rental house that had single pane widows they never vibrated in 13 yr's.
When we first moved in we put a knocker on the front door that thing would rattle every time a plane flew by the back of the house. Easy fix removed the knocker. TV reception was less than optimal every time a plane flew by Cable TV took care of that.
The reason we moved after 13 yr's was because the home owner raised our rent. When we first moved in It didn't take very long before we did't notice the planes from inside the house.
The only time we heard a window rattle (vibrate?) was in saudi in 1990 when a scud missle was coming in "close." Something about the sonic speed, When the windows started rattleing it was time to grab a camera run outside and take some pictures
Never thought of complaining to the iraqi's. The military eventually convinced them it was in their best interests to stop that noisey stuff.
This women will evently stop chasing windmills, or sell the house, The noise is in her head not her ears and it will continue to get louder unless she gets some medical help or moves.
R.

I was thinking more of a perris jet boogie, as long as they take that 727 off and land it right over her house each load!
Yes, it's a DC-9, and it has a Stage III kit on it so it's not so loud any more, but still a good deal noisier than anything else that flies out of Longmont.
The best choice for returning the favor would be a C-123. They're pretty much the loudest twin-engine airplane ever made and noisier than most with four.
An H-53 chopper boogie would be good, too, and of course it would be great to have some warbirds visit... B-17s, B-24s... after a week of that, little sweet cheeks at the end of the runway would be too deaf to ever again hear a Twin Otter, much less complain about it.

It use to be legal to drive through town with your super bass radio blaring away at top volume. You don't hear that much anymore do you? Know why? It's ILLEGAL! Just a heads up....

BWAAAHAHAHAHAA Hey guys I found the best Noise complaint yet!! Who here has read the Longmont Airport Complaint Blogspot?!? You've got to check this out.
23. July 21 @ 11:00. Tom called to complain about the skydive plane flying right down the river at a low altitude and buzzing his farm. I passed his complaint to Mile-Hi. He also complained about another plane that was “hot dogging” it over his farm and being a jerk.
So there you have it. They're flying their airplanes and being jerks. You can't make this stuff up, that's the complaint.

While one can lower their car stereo volume, the document clearly spells out the fact that the plane(s) in question cannot be quieted any further than it already is.
Spend much time pushing doors that very clearly spell that they need to be pulled ? I am attaching a picture for reference. Seems to demonstrate the current Kim Gibbs Cool-aid movement well.

If she is so smart and professional then she should know not to buy or rent living space near an airport. Everything has been done within reason to minimize noise.

Explain this to me please. How does a "very smart" woman BUY A HOUSE near an airport, then proceed to cry about noise?

But you do realize you do not have; the law, science, economy, or the airport, on your side right?
You have a half dozen people who bought property next to an airport that was in place in the 1940's and has had active business on it ever since. That is not a formidable opponent, but a selfish one.

What is interesting reading the airport complaint blog is how few of the complaints were directly related to the skydiving operations..I just wonder why this lady has singled out the Dropzone among all airport traffic. The complaint is full of 'low flying' Cessna's, Buzzing Yellow planes (Crop dusters???), Helicopters, et cetera. If this singles out the Dropzone, it sounds like a case of economic discrimination or a law that would place restrictions on one entity on the airport but not others. Stratostar would be the expert on those particulars, but something just doesn't add up.....

Purely a guess, but I'd think that the DZ would be the most visible and most active place on the airport. It has the most people hanging out there, and probably generates the most flights from a particular airplane.
I still want to know why a "smart and professional woman" buys a house right next to an airport if she hates airplane noise.

No here name is Emma J. Withers and she has property in Dade City Florida @ 38121 Shadow Drive, Dade City, FL 33525, she is friends with that nut case Ms. Kimberly Gibbs and it seems she has been visiting Gunbarrel for some time now http://www.timescall.com/...heeditor/ci_20005672
One would assume by her posts and the news story she is staying with Ms. Kimberly Gibbs @ 7468 Mt. Sherman Rd Gunbarrel Co. and thus forced to listen to her nut case friend bitch endlessly about airplanes flying over 7468 Mt. Sherman Rd. because it is in direct line with the downwind leg approach path to the 29 runway.
While not busy ringing the airport and the City of Longmont every flight to bitch about airplanes and writing letters to the newspaper, those two assholes are busy folding tin foil hats for their little self center tin hat brigade and picketing the Girl Scout cookie sale over at the Longmont Walmart.
But without them life would be boring, you got to have people to laugh at and those two are laughable at best.....

Take a chill pill and lets stop makeing this a them vs us thing. Thats almost like a personnel atack.
IMO The reason it bothers them so much is because they ccan hear the airplanes flying 24/7/365. Even if they go to florida it's those airplanes. Can't you hear them???

Name dropper...just not your own. "Highly professional" at what? You come on a skydiving web site and expect something other than "negative comments". Apparently, you are not as smart as Ms. Gibbs. In reality though, you probably are Ms. Gibbs...or perhaps Teresa Foster. I dont' know the owner(s) of Mile High Skydiving but I hope they fight you to the ends of the earth. In fact, I think we will add a weekend at MHS to our Colorado trip this summer so we can jump out of "those noisy, obnoxious airplanes". I encourage others to do the same.
Pasco County needs to keep the floodplain clear, clean
Editor: Pasco County is endangering lives, squandering tax dollars and jeopardizing flood management by allowing developers to build in the floodplain. Last year alone, Pasco County spent hundreds of thousands of dollars pumping water to prevent dangerous flooding of homes that were built in the floodplain. Unbelievably, the county is still issuing permits for floodplain development.
Floodplains provide immense ecological benefits. They filter and trap sediments and pollutants. They store water, which reduces the velocity of the floodwater. Also, periodic flooding rejuvenates and sustains floodplain vegetation, preventing erosion. This vegetation produces shade which reduces harmful warm water temperatures, and provides habitat for fish and wildlife.
Pasco County has a lot of beautiful high and dry land. There is no need to put our residents at risk and disturb an important resource by altering the natural characteristics of our floodway. Allowing development in the floodplain is irresponsible and shortsighted, and wastes dollars that could be used on roads and schools.
I have been bewildered as to why Republicans would insist on huge spending cuts at a time of high unemployment. Spending cuts will inevitably lead to even greater unemployment. Why would they do that? Then, a thought occurred to me like a thunderbolt. Could it be that the Republicans want to maximize unemployment? What could that possibly accomplish? Well, it would accomplish three things:
1) Those who have jobs, fearing they could lose them, would become even more productive.
2) Unemployed workers looking for jobs would have lower salary expectations.
3) President Barack Obama would get the blame, and his chances for re-election would be diminished.
What a boon for business! The more I think about it, the more convinced I become that this may be a part of the Republican leadership's agenda, though I don't think it's what the average voter had in mind when he or she voted Republican.

I think the difference is that they see the small airport as vulnerable to complaint. They think a small airport is not important, since they will not fly out of it to go on vacation.

First, this is not a "Blog" It's a forum for skydivers (and Woofos - that’s you) to discuss skydiving issues. Secondly, the folks who frequent this FORUM jump out of airplanes for fun. Your "formidable adversary" does not scare them.
And lastly, there is a very simple solution to this whole issue. If you or any others don't like the noise, MOVE!!! If Ms. Gibbs hasn't figured that out yet, I question just how "smart" she really is.

Yes, because you can turn a radio down. If you 'turn the props down' you get a plane landing on your head.
Also a teenager with a car stereo is not bringing much money into the local economy..... Can't say that about a busy airport.

A smart person would not move next to an airport and then complain about airplane noise. Unless she owned her property before the 1940's... the airport was there first.
As for caring about the quality of life.... She is only concerned with HER quality of life. She does not seem to care about the pilots and the skydivers that use that airport, or the pilots and skydivers that work at that airport. For HER quality of life... I suggest she move away from the noise. The airport was there first and the FAA and city have already pretty much said she has no case.

That was my home DZ at the time and in addition to losing a good friend on the jump plane I was involved in counteracting the spin the airline company tried to put on it that the jump plane was at fault.
Turns out the twin engine commuter's pilot had their heads in the cockpit and just flew right up the ass of the jump plane -- when it was directly over the open-NOTAM/chart-marked DZ.
Chewed the tail off, chopped the heads off the two jumpers in the back and sliced the foot of one other jumper. Commuter crashed, all aboard KIA.
The jump pilot and three (?) other jumpers all survived by bailing out of the 206.
In addition to calling reporers that I knew and providing the facts, I actually went to the home of the airline's PR person and explained to her gently but firmly that she was getting very bad information and that it was in her company's best interest that she cease and desist because both the radar record and the wreckage itself provided irrefutable evidence that the commuter pilots blew it.
She was not happy that I tracked her down, but to her credit she listened and from that day forward, the airline basically said "tragedy for all involved. no further comment while it's under investigation" and that was the end of that.
As usual, an uptick in first-jump students followed.

I don't know how long you have lived next to a Federally Funded airport and I truly do not care, but sounds like your best option is to move. The FAA will not ban an aeronautical activity and the city will face a discrimination lawsuit if the terminate the drop zones lease.
By your statement above it appears you need to move about 40 miles out of town so you can have the peace and tranquility you desire, but I fear that would be an inconvenience to you as your local coffee house and salon would be a little further away. Pretty obvious the issue here is you, and what you want you spoiled bitch..... Get over yourself, you live close to an airport you need to expect aircraft noise.

Maybe you should just focus on the boom boxes and the noise pollution those things produce and leave aviation alone. There are cities with bans on loud auto stereos so it can be done in that area. Choose your battles carefully, because obviously, you aren't going to do jack shit about airport noise.

Your one warning.
And to everyone else - consider this your one warning. You cannot attack someone here even if you disagree with them.
Also consider that you are posting on a public forum. You may not like one person posting on here, but if this issue becomes a contentious public one, people who may be supportive of skydiving in Colorado will come here to read what skydivers have to say - and this thread might just change their minds, resulting in serious problems for DZ's in Colorado. So think before you post.

I got this private message from a user who will remain nameless .
I got a kick out of it, maybe you will too.
"This lady is not trying to "shut them down" She just wants them to find an isolated place to drop skydivers...a place that is not next to residential area. Good grief! There are thousands of acres of open space in Colorado. This is a no-brainer.
I've watched this lady in action a number of times. She is very out-spoken and influential, and has many well-connected friends."

Yea bitching because they live under the approach for the runway. Nice little video to bitch about an otter landing, just think if it had been taking off how much she would have been bitching.

Yes, like getting her "facts" she seems to like to espouse maybe a bit more "put together" before she goes espousing them.
MileHigh is so darn inconsiderate towards their resident neighbor! - It's so abundantly obvious!! ...You know, being so darn adamant resistant and all - to put those "industry standard" hush-kits onto their Twin Otter like (she says/insists) Deland did!! Clearly SHE is right, and absolutely everyone else in the world is wrong.
WTH is wrong with YOU?
Hopefully, regardless though - she finds a way to move along, and somehow find peace in her life. There's just got to be some other motivation behind her clear and obvious ill-will. Personallly, I feel sorry for her (now reading all that I have on this), and I honestly instead find myself here now feeling sorry for her, and wishing for her, an ability to get through/over whatever it (clearly) is with herself and her self-inflicted "ills". Regardless - no matter how you slice it, "living" that way, truly is, no way to live.
If you happen to be reading this Ms. Gibbs - Honestly, truly - think about it. I wish you good health and happiness, and that you can truly find both for yourself, in your life.
Seriously.
Cheers, -Grant

I live in Colorado because I grew up here. Most of the people that I know who moved here did so because they or their parents got a job here. A handful of people I know moved here for the natural beauty. All of those people moved to the mountains for the peace and quiet.
I live in the city of Denver. It's noisy, polluted and dirty. I don't expect open space and natural settings here in the city. I'm not going on a rampage trying to get all the hospitals to move away from me. Or the fire departments. Or the traffic. I bought my house with understanding of what it entailed.
You are free to move to the mountains (if you can afford it. I can't). There is a lot of peace and quiet there. That's probably part of the reason why it's so expensive.
Asking everyone you don't like to move away from you, after you moved there, is the height of narcissism. Especially if they were there before you came.

Hey Naturegirl (Kim?),
We just got some excellent news. It looks like they may be expanding the airport to include a test track for the F1 circuit. These cars will easily cover up the noise of the skydiving planes. Due to the air density in Colorado, it makes the perfect testbed and they hope to run 7 days a week with cars from all over the world. Don't worry, the screaming engines will only be able to be heard 20-30 miles away. The city has restricted their testing to occur from 6am through 11pm.
Although funny, maybe not the best move to do the direct mailer. These folks don't believe in letting Mile High Operate and will use this to help make more enemies for Mile High.

I operated a DZ on a municipal for a few years and found the climate to be politically charged on every issue all the time. A move like this could serve to put some airport board members or city council folks on the other side of the argument, especially given that the DZ has some very vocal opponents.
We've all seen what happens when the right people decide a DZ isn't worth the perceived hassles it brings, so I'm not sure why Frank would want to feed that.

Yes. I agree that it is pretty funny, if you are on the side of the airport and have a sense of humor about ths situation. For the "I hate airplane" crowd however...
It's more of a shoving it into your face.
I do, however love Kim's comment that the city needs to realize that it has the authority to regulate the noise coming from the airport.

No. They don't. It's regulated by the FAA.
The DZ can still hand out the Bumper Stickers and let their Patrons display them.
The DZ could use the stamped bills for change method, but stamp every bill, not just the $2 ones. Every bill with a stamp will start to circulate through the community and then the City will see the DZ's impact on the local economy.

The dropzone sent a nice bumpersticker to the people that have been fighting their very operation. They did not send them feces, enroll them in the sex-toy-of-the-month club, or sign them up for Jehovah's Witnesses to come by and discuss their personal relationship with God.... they sent them little stickers that the person could toss in the trash.
Not exactly what I would call a huge prank or hurtful. And given past experiences with what skydivers are known to do this was a blip on the radar.
I would have sent them all industrial earplugs.....

what we do over here in Switzerland is try to get the best Airfield/neighbourhood communication and relation possible. Regularly keep them informed on what we do for noise abatement, show them how we regulate ourselves to try and limit flight related disturbance, sometimes also invite them to our parties, and organize a yearly "neighbourhood dinner". Also sometimes try and talk them into coming for a flight in the plane or a tandem jump. Keeps the good relations, they understand better our point of view, even if some have strong political agendas.

I'm with you on this, however, why give these Yahoos reason to look harder to make our lives miserable. If they want to, they will eventually find a way to shut us down. Better to (as my wife says) "kill them with kindness".

What a concept. But not nearly as satisfying as pissing in their Wheaties. (sp ?)
not sure about "Stupid"....... but certainly not real wise.. the last thing you should do , once you've identified a hornets nest.... is to go over and bang on it with a stick....
that tends to piss OFF the hornets....... ya' Know?????
here is hoping, that the DZ can reach a sensible conclusion , to this issue.
It certainly exposes the "Quiet Skies" dipsticks as loudmouth whiners who complain about everything -- including getting a bumper sticker in the mail.
I think Frank ought to do a follow-on to the bumper sticker gambit and pull a Rush Limbaugh* on them:
Form a "Quiet Meetings" group dedicated to reducing noise pollution at city council meetings by whining weasels with nothing better to do with their time (and those of others at the meetings) than bitch about businesses that pre-date their residence near-to by years and decades.
44
* Rush Limbaugh created "Rush Babes for America" to counteract the National Organization for Women, and in 48 hours far exceeded the NOW membership rolls. Regardless of your feeling towards the guy and his politics, it was a brilliant move and Frank should see similar results because I think there are far - far - more people in that community who are much more sick of whining weasel noise than they are of airplane noise.

It also shows mile high to be antagonistic. So before when the dorks at quiet skies were saying the plane was buzzing them, I tended to think the dorks at quiet skies were full of it. But now that mile high has shown an antagonistic streak..... I may believe the QS folks a bit about MH's actions being antagonistic.
So, MH has lost some of its deny-ability and QS has gained some believability. None of this might matter in the end, but a poor winner gloating is never a good move.

Or just standing up for itself in the face of would-be bullies trying to game the system.
I mean really, think about the responses this generated from the "Quiet" loudmouths:
"The conclusion we come to at this point is that Mile-Hi is very proud of being one of the biggest noise producers in Boulder County." --Quiet Loudmouth Ron Korsch to the Longmont City Council.
"I do think it sends a very clear message to me from Mile-Hi that they are untouchable and that they have the city in their back pocket." -- Chief Quiet Loudmouth Kim Gibbs
Frank got one loudmouth to draw a ridiculously over-the-top and obviously incorrect 'conclusion'" -- and another to publicly insult the city's entire leadership.
Seems to me that he did more good than bad for the DZ and the airport, airport manager Barth's handwringing notwithstanding.
Having said that, neither of us are there on the ground dealing with these dipsticks face-to-face, so we're both just launching liquid into the wind. As the Chinese farmer said, "We'll see."*
44
* A Chinese farmer's son finds a beautiful white stallion and brings it home.
"What a lucky man you are," said his neighbors.
"We'll see," said the farmer.
The next day, the son breaks his leg trying to ride the stallion, thereby depriving his father of his help for the harvest.
"What an unlucky man you are," said his neighbors.
"We'll see," said the farmer.
The next week, the king came through the village on his way to war and conscripted all of the young men except the farmer's son, who had a broken leg.

As a 20-year veteran as on-air talent in the radio business, I can say with a pretty high degree of confidence that your assessment is incorrect. Rush's success is predicated on such moves as an obviously controversial media personality. In that game controversy spurs listenership on both sides of the argument and can't put you out of business as long as there are sponsors waiting for their turn to write checks - which Rush has truckloads of.
In the case of a DZ with pissed off neighbors, stirring controversy has no positive outcome. The whiners will only see the DZ's actions as rubbing the issue in their faces, prompting a predictable reaction. Some folks in town may see that response as whiners just whining louder, but to those who matter - airport board members, city council members and city management - the whiners are citizens of the community who vote.
The primary goal of city officials is to dispose of the issue and hopefully make everyone happy - or at least not angry - in the process, which the DZ's actions are not helping them do. Even if city officials agree with the DZ in this case, they are extremely sensitive to the wishes of the voters, and the squeaky voting wheel gets the municipal grease. Also remember that many if not most of the jumpers live outside the city and don't vote in city elections. ALL the whiners are city residents that vote for city officials.
Rush is in the entertainment business where sponsors can be replaced with others salivating to buy a finite amount of commercial airtime. Mile High is in the skydiving business on a municipal airport managed by people who need to ride the political fence for their own self-preservation.
Two totally different creatures with nearly polar opposite tactics for success.
It certainly exposes the "Quiet Skies" dipsticks as loudmouth whiners who complain about everything -- including getting a bumper sticker in the mail.

Two totally different creatures with nearly polar opposite tactics for success.
LOL... that's why I prefaced my response to "stupid move by Mile high....." by saying "Maybe, maybe not."
Can't quibble with a thing you said and after briefly pondering what you said, I still won't say the Mile-Hi move was stupid, but you make a very sound argument indeed that they should have just let lying dogs sleep.

I guess whether or not it was a stupid move depends on the DZO's motives behind it. As a former DZO on a muni, I learned pretty quickly that the one thing board and council members hate are irate calls from constituents. I got the best results when I stood my ground when I knew I was in the right, but did so as politely as possible - at least when speaking to anyone who might repeat my words to the other side.
I can't imagine what the reaction of the city leaders was when they heard what Frank did. My guess is they thought "what the f*ck did he go and do THAT for?"

Call me stupid and unimaginative. I can't think of a productive motive for it.
The only one I could come up with was if he was hoping to get asked to leave the airport and could negotiate a lease contract settlement on his way out like Larry Hill did at Coolidge.

Vance Brand is the closest airport to the front range cities between Boulder and Denver which is out of DIA's air space so you can get 12,500 AGL without permission from air traffic control. Moving would be a pretty dumb business move.
I can easily picture Jeff Sands sending out the bumper stickers; maybe Frank was channeling his spirit.

As I understand it, Frank admitted to sending the stickers out as a joke.
I wasn't thinking about Mile High moving. I was just suggesting that if a DZO wanted to move OR close up shop (which I am NOT saying is happening) he or she could make waves in hopes of getting paid to go away through a negotiated lease termination.
All purely hypothetical, but it's a strategy I've seen in other types of contractual relationships with municipalities.

And as we all do one occasion when making jokes, he didn't think it through. At least he didn't make a joke to a TSA pervert about his rig being "the bomb" or yelling "Hi Jack!' to one of his buddies on the concourse.
I think the motive to which we can chalk this up can be filed under "It seemed like a good idea at the time."
One thing he should perhaps do, though, is buy the airport manager a case of beer.

The main crux of her letter was that Longmont receives a 'negligible' amount of revenue from SMH, which we all know is bullshit.
A quick search on Google would have turned up the Colorado airport impact study which would have shown the tens if millions of dollars the Longmont airport pumps into the local economy.
I did frequent one DZ that insisted everyone drop their local receiPts in a big jar at manifest. That way they could go to the local meetings and prove just how much we spend in town.

Not unless it's done with intent to defraud. The "where's George" stamps aren't illegal, nor is writing "I grew hemp" on GW's portrait on the One dollar bill.

I always have to stop and look up to see who it is. I can identify the otter by engine sound pretty reliably.
You want to talk about noise, how about the guy who drives down my road at 2am with apparently no muffler on his vehicle, or the 18 trains a day that come through, blowing their horns at 2am, long after all self-respecting airplanes have gone to bed!

I have this same problem. JiMMyT and I were discussing this recently. When something unfamiliar flies over, I drop everything I'm doing (well, not always ) and run outside to see it!!!
I even softly forced myself into the local maintenance hangar that was restoring an old A-4 Skyhawk after seeing it fly over. Now friends with everyone on the project. Speaking of which....I'm due for a Friday night beer visit at the hangar. You should have seen me following that thing in my truck....then snooping all over the airport to find it!!

It's not Jeffco anymore, it's Metro. Apparently the airport is fancy but not gay. Arapahoe is also Centennial and Stapleton is no more.

It seems like it's mostly died down now. They're expanding the runway and no one talks about the issues so much anymore. It sounded like most of the trouble was going on before I started jumping, back in July.
I hear the planes pretty regularly from my house, but they're no more obtrusive than the commercial jet I hear flying over right now, and much less so than street noise and the trains. I've been living in Longmont for a couple of years now and I still get woken up by cars and trains at 2am.
I hope the runway expansion leads to commercial service between Longmont and DIA. A round trip to DIA via the interstates is miserable. You could hit the toll road, but IIRC the round trip is something like $40 that way. I seem to recall the price was similar with the super shuttle. If I could just fly out of Vance Brand or fly visiting relatives there, it'd be worth a pretty hefty premium to me to not have to mess with any of that. I'm not sure if enough people feel similarly to make it profitable, though.
Clearly, your picture is old/outdated (and in comparison to reality, actually DOES look like a glamour-shot / pin-up! ) ...See instead, rather a more recent/current one, attached.

If I'm walking to lunch with co-workers, they won't even notice the plane noise until I point the plane out. Most of the time I don't even notice them over the road noise from the street, and they're much less loud than the trains that come through here every half hour or so, blowing their horns day and night. Unless you're specifically listening for the plane, you probably won't notice it most of the time, and if you're the kind of person who listens for them so you can specifically be annoyed by them, there's really not going to be any pleasing you anyway, until the airport is completely gone. Which isn't likely to happen now that they're lengthening the runway.

Speaking of which, anyone know when this video was made? Jeff Sands died in 2003, so it had to have been before that. If you look at the shots of them flying over Longmont, there's a LOT less there than there is now. For one thing, an entire housing development south of the airport is nowhere to be seen.
Not, I suppose, that pointing out that they were here first would have much effect, it sounds like a few people just like being bent out of shape and the airport is a convenient target. Down in Florida we had a name for those people; "Condo Crabs." Living in their condo on the beach and getting pissed off about things that no reasonable human being could possibly get pissed off about.

As I sit here at work in the Denver area looking at 50+ degree temps with just a trace of clouds in the sky, while i'm sure there is a "Mile-Hi now call" taking place, I read this this and sigh. It reminds me of a similar battle in a town were I used to live, a lady didn't like the music playing on a local FM radio station, she too rounded up a possey, and some how got the station to change it's format. While the vast majority of people in this world would(as I would)say "Just change the station if you don't like the music!" It shows us that there is a certain type of people out there that get so hung up on the things that bother them, they look for it! And look to find ways to take the cake away from everybody just because they don't like that particular flavor.
I don't like to eat spinach, so I don't eat it, buy it, or order it. I'm not gonna try and get the farmer to stop growing it, because I know other people enjoy the stuff.

Woahhhhhh!
I came back and looked , and now I'm a hateful old biddy?
Those damn brussels sprout. They make too much noise when they are steamed and twice as much noise on them when they are roasted.
Someone should devise some sort of noise arresters on things.
AND CHEW WITH YOUR MOUTH CLOSED, YOU LOUD UNCOUTH THING.

Is it really necessary to call her a bitch just because you disagree with her and her arguements? I find that unfair and inappropriate.
Why yes. Yes it is. Bitch
I don't think she's a bitch.
The nice lady is just confused because of the constant noise from someplace, a airplane or a space ship. Shes trying her best to stop that noise. Before she loses her mind
Hearing noises may lead to hearing voices. Definatly don't let her shutdown the DZ due to her delusional behavior. Show the lady some compassion.
The fear of space ship abuction must be scary stuff
Be quiet for a minute.... do you hear that. It's them

"Mile Hi at it again.....How rude."
Lady can you tell us how else we can get up to 13000 AGL?
I'm sorry you dont like the sound of an engine that's part of a plane full of awesome, but next time you buy a house....you might want to know if you're new house in under NORMAL aircraft patterns.

Dunno why you guys all want that Jackwagon to shut up. Personally, I find her insisting on beating her head against the wall, to be quite amusing ...
It's like watching a dunk driving the wrong way on the highway. I don't find that amusing.
Personaly I feel sorry for the lady wasteing her time on a cause that she's not going to win. Watched a Mcnasty for about 10 yr's he had the FAA on speed dial, the local news etc.video camera every weekend.
He wasted 10 yrs for what? Trying to get a DZ moved off a private airpost that the DZO built and sold off I lot to the wrong guy.McNasty
I undertand the challenges the industry is facing with the airport access issue. But acting like little kids and making fun of the longmont lady (LL) is just makeing her more determined and giving her more stuff to bitch about.
But thats just me do whatever amuses you. I'm sure you will.

Why would she annoy you? She's just a typical loudmouthed, clueless, Jackwagon. How many times have you had to deal w/such a fool? In this case, there's no threat from her antics. She's just a nasty (& yes, pitiable) sourpuss. Sit back, grab some popcorn, & watch her bat her thick head against the wall.
Lots of annoying Jackwagons need their asses kicked. Hell, this one is doing it to herself .

Drunk Drivers are no laughing matter. They're a threat to the rest of us. This sack O'Nastiness isn't any threat. She has no legal leg to stand on. It's not that I don't hear ya on the sometimes hostile environments DZs have to operate in. I just don't see the need to waste any concern over a garden-variety arrogant twit w/a big mouth. Let her run her mouth for twenty years. She'll get nowhere w/her vendetta. Those will be twenty years she isn't hassling some other innocent group. We're big enough to let her rage against us. Think of it as a community service.
