Ahhh first time I'm so stoked about going. Have to buy a car and probably fix it first but hopefully I'll be there from the tues-wed till end Cool

I already got some tips from the Australians before I came back... at least I know where the good camping spots are and where the manifest / beer will be. A couple of the skydivers I met in Sydney knew people who were going or had been there before.

Yes, but it's all going to be set up differently this year. Still, you'll have a great time. Cool

Good choice. It's very green and we've got Johnny Longspot back flying for us.

Also, might be a poker tent.

So.... after all this back-and-forth (and, dare I say drama, here's my first-hand Lost Prairie Boogie 2011 report.

-The weather was terrible
-The skydives sucked.
-The beer was warm.
-There were too many damn Canadians.
-The boobies came out on Topless Tuesday.
-The junk came out on Wobbly Wednesday.
-There was "be kind to Canadians" day.
-People went to the fire tower and the last two Otters of the day buzzed the tower.
-Lots of time was spent at the lake.
-Mad John organized daily Almost Sober loads.
-The Cock Chorus sucked less.
-The Crack Choir sounded pretty great.
-People told bullshit stories around the bonfire.
-Lots of poker was played.
-Some visits were made to Moose's pizza.
-No wind landings were typically entertaining.
-Saturday ended with a beautiful sunset cross country down the valley and a two-Otter flyby.
-The Skydive Arizona crew kept manifest running smoothly and the planes humming.
-We did our business in Pee-Wees porta potties
-There was pie.
-There were fireworks
-We all came home covered in Prairie dust.

For anyone who's ever been to LP, that list of stuff oughta sound awfully familiar. The sky did not fall (well, unless you count that wicked hailstorm we got on Monday!).

But here's what else I saw this year:

-Arizona Arsenal added some great freefly/tracking/hybrid/etc. organizing & coaching.
-Registration included a boogie t-shirt.
-We could land right in front of our campsites/packing tents on a flat, green landing area (though I think we have Mother Nature and the wet winter/spring to thank for the "green" part).
-Registration also included Saturday dinner
-RVs had the option of electrical hookups right near the manifest building.
-There were EMTs from the Marion fire department on site during all jumping hours.
-There was a bar; no, it won't ever replace the Lost Prairie Lounge, and this year's was only temporary, but it provided a place to gather, and dance, and make jackasses of ourselves after hours.

From what I observed, the operators of Meadow Peak Skydiving and Skydive Lost Prairie worked together well to keep both the fun jumper and the tandem/student operations working smoothly throughout the boogie and if there was any lingering hostility between the parties, I certainly didn't see it.

I realize this was only my 7th Lost Prairie and I don't have the history of those of you who have been coming for way longer than that, but I gotta say that I appreciated the fact that all the boogie traditions were maintained while the boogie also evolves. This boogie is special because of the people and the traditions that they make and carry on, but at the same time, it will always be evolving and needs to evolve if we want it to continue being around 20 years from now.

It better be - I already put my name on the list for the 2031 Montana SOS record.Cool

Not sure about paddling two miles on the lake at two in the morning again though... Laugh

I was apprehensive about the changes and politics, but felt it was handled well, and thought the new camping area was great. Wayndo worked hard to get things in shape at the new location. I heard very little negativity about the changes. Fred was around and active in the boogie. We will be back, as will most of the Fort Washington crowd that camped with us.

As a first-timer, I was so impressed with this boogie--it exceeded my expectations and my fears were eased (someone who'd been there in the past warned me I might be involuntarily divested of my clothing). After jumping with Mad John all week, I would follow him anywhere. Maybe even to Nicaragua! And most amazing of all was the chance to be coached by Arizona Arsenal. Plus, it became clear at last why they are named Arsenal, when I saw Curtis trudge out to the landing area with a small rifle and shoot a prairie dog. I will most certainly be back next year and for years to come.

How can we forget those squirrels. They were huge and so damn many of them.Cool

I have to give Meadow Peak Skydiving some props. A lot of effort was made to keep the traditions intact, while also offering what jumpers expect as part of a boogie. The t-shirt, Saturday dinner, free beer were appreciated. The availability of internet was a plus. The on site medics were great when we had two hard landings, enabling a quick response. Having the usual MadJohn RW organizing is an LP tradition, and having Arsenal there providing coaching/organizing was a huge hit. The school and boogie staff seamed to work well together to make sure the needs of the students and up jumpers were met without sacrificing one over the other. There was a skydiver that went beyond what is considered acceptable behavior(even for boogie standards). He was told to leave and not come back. It feels like MPS wants to create a playground for all of us disfunctional skydivers, but not let it get out of hand. I think they have succeeded.

Other than the loss of the LP Lounge, which was not caused by the change in who was operating the boogie, I can see no negatives in the new location. The fact that the event is on private land means the problem of the locals causing havoc did not happen. The Cracks being able to sing without the usual drunk local screaming "show us yer tits" was a first, and a wonderful change. I look forward to the future and expect a bigger attendance as more folks learn of the LP experience. More creature comforts should be completed by next year and should make the LP that much of a better boogie.

Just hope I get the same RV slot. It was perfect.

I have been back for a few days and I already miss Lost Prairie … being “high” from hypoxia … the “holly shit” fast landings … chilling at the lake … Doc’s yummy dinners … making new friends for life … the incredibly “big (night) sky” I haven’t ever seen before; I even miss the tent and the Prairie dust that got everywhere Blush ...

None of my silly “city girl” fears came true and everyone made sure to give me loads of crap about it. I wasn’t cold at night, the bears didn’t eat me and I didn’t miss the “comforts of civilized world” one bit; actually, not having cell phone coverage and Internet access for the entire week was a welcomed break from the shackles of technology.

There is just one thing I wish I didn’t have among my memories of Lost Prairie – witnessing someone “go in” for the first time UnsureUnsureUnsure ...

While on the cross-country sunset jump, taking in the majestic views and reflecting on the experiences I’ve had all week, I made the decision that I will never miss the yearly Lost Prairie boogie going forward. See you all next year … or sooner (at drop zone around the country).

Oh … and next year I won’t miss jumping with Mad John … well, I’ll probably end up doing that in Nicaragua in the Spring SmileSmileSmile ...
