ZHills sign Can't Post

This sign, now on display at a dropzone (not in Florida), will perhaps bring back some memories.

Stolen - I think - during the 1981 Easter Boogie. A hundred bucks to have it made, another hundred for a year's rent on the location - pffft - gone. Left me in a moderately murderous mood.

You should have made sure to jump a Beech while you were there, then you could've claimed that you didn't lie to her. "Hey, I told you we were going to see a Beech!"

Hoop may remember the day I spotted a 20 way out on the edge of the far runway.
I was avoiding clouds and I NEVER went around, we had a truck to pick everyone up, no big deal.
1/2 way to the ground I remember the truck keys, the only damned truck keys, are in my pocket.

When I got back to the old loft, I just jumped in the truck went into town and bought 2 cases of beer, came back and put them on the back 'patio'.

Went into the office and Hoop's first words were 'you better get some beer', I just said I already did...

And if Wendy had been up with Bill Buchman flying, she'd have been fine, spotting with him was, wait, wait, wait, that's far enough, 'CUT' ... just never needed corrections..

I painted some signs for the new building (after the fire), wonder whatever happened to them? Had funny little skydiver characters on them, and some writing I think. Never took any picture of them, oddly enough, and cant quite remember. But they were quite big and sat on the wall of the manifest building.

At the first Z-Hills 10-Way Turkey meet in 1969 our spotting of the DC-3 was done from the ground by the judges, and they put us ALL so far out nobody knew which way to track on break-up.
Well, my Dad always said the best way to get to know a new place is go bet lost in it. OK Dad, but after two or three times being put off of the DZ and into the outback it starts to get old.

All-in-all that was one great weekend and 10-Way meet.

If you read the website you'd have the answer to the additional toppings question.
Where in England? I have a limit on distance. I'm in New York. NEW york. Not York. I see according to Google Earth it's roughly 3,200 miles from NY to Corwall. If you're in Devon you might be too far.

However, regarding the sign, I think I saw it today. I know I saw one. Was there only one? If so, then that's what I've been looking at. I think I've been looking at it for years in fact.

There must be a story behind this sign, how it got here. I'd like to know the tale from the thief's perspective. We're having our 30 year anniversary celebration this next weekend. Actually, I think the suggestion by normiss that it would be best displayed in the new Bird House Bar is right on. Having the one from the '81 WPC would be even more appropriate - especially since Bird was on the winning 8-way team. What do you say, denniscoursey?

If I can work out the logistics of building a wood-fired brick oven or transporting my bus with oven to England I'd love to bake you a few right in your driveway/backyard/street... And I thank you for staying on topic in this thread. Pizza is paramount!

Parachuting and pizza - two worthy pursuits to be passionate about.

I think the sign would be a fine addition to the Bird House, another memory-inducing display from those halcyon days. I can see a little plaque underneath noting the return to its birthplace by Hearth2Hearth - and a take out menu.

It was those stupid telemeters.

You had to have the plane coming towards you
regardless of the winds.

And you had to get the jumpers out pretty early
because if they went over the top while in freefall
the telemeters would hit the stop before they got
vertical and you couldn't just swing them around
because you'd never find the jumpers in time.

I felt really bad about putting you guys out in the
swamp so many times.

I hated being a judge. I only tried it about 3 times,
once at Z'hills, and the first 4 and 10 way nationals,
and each time uncovered all kinds of problems in spite
of our best efforts to anticipate and plan.

I guess I'm incompatible with the competition
vibe because I only competed once, at the first
10 man meet, and that was pretty painful, too.

But I really am sorry that I put you guys out
in the swamp so many times.

Hello Skratch,

I thought that might get your attention.

We all knew and understood the problems you had on the ground. You told us what was up after the first jump and we knew what to expect from there-on. Hell, you know how much competitors like to snivel. That issue actually helped take a little of the pressure off of us by keeping us focused on the formations. It also made for some great jump stories down the line. For sure it didnt stop ANY of us from partying every night after the jumping was over.
If you remember, during the Z-Hills meet Max backed right into the ONLY, I mean THE ONLY tree right in the middle of a very large field. We had to get a chain saw to cut the tree down and get his rig for him. The wind came up right as the tree started to fall and his main inflated pulling the tree back onto his rig before it hit the ground. It was like a clip out of a Keystone cops movie.

After Z-Hills Max and I made a few more trips across the country on his corporate dime to check-out new Drop-Zones and get them into our log books. During our travels the Z-Hills stories were a real hit.

Dont take the ribbing so hard Skratch. You knows we loves ya.

Regards,
SCR-216

I can remember some of those swamp loads...I know we used to have the policy that if you got blown into the swamp, one of us would take the 182 or 196, locate the guys, then fly in the direction of the airport, we'd make three passes all going the same direction so they kinda knew which way to head.
Sometimes we dropped "care packages" ranging anywhere from water, beer, pot, food or whatever to help them out depending on how far they had to truck.
What fun!....

I once met a Z-Hills local who lived next to the swamp, to the southeast of the DZ a few miles. He had a wild pig that he had found and raised from a baby. It was about 500 lbs and looked like the devil, with really long tusks. I never went into the swamp without my .45 after that.

Damn, I wish I was around back then!

>(Just trying to keep everything on thread here.)

Tilting at windmills again I see ..

But I'm not surprised, anybody who would
tackle running a dropzone has a serious
tilting gene :-) :-)

> How you doing, old friend?

After shedding a lot of stuff in the move
up here above Seattle I'm tuning in to this
new phase and this new region, and starting
to shed ideas and viewpoints.

It's interesting how different it feels in different
parts of the world, and also how my perspective
is changing as I get older.

The combined effect is quite a ride, but fortunately
I'm past the point of having to appear like I actually
know what I'm doing.

Is this still on topic?

I think so, let's see, "ZHills sign", what sign are you?

I'm a sign of the times.

There, I think we're still on topic ..

Early in the weekend I showed the sign to a visiting friend who jumps at Z-Hills and I told him he was taking it back with him. We chuckled but we never really planned. And that was it. Last evening I saw that the sign is now gone. Vanished! And no one I know knows where. The saga continues...

Kim--

Given the gruelling conditions likely to be met on the trek back, one hopes he availed himself of a sustaining pizza from the wood-fired brick oven of Hearth2Hearth. With all the brigands and ne'er-do-wells lying in wait for the sign 'twixt the Ranch and Z'hills, he'll want his wits about him.

Re: [Jim_Hooper] ZHills sign [In reply to] Can't Post

So you're saying, if I read you correctly, that with all the brigands and ne'er-do-wells we have already at both Z-Hills and the Ranch, there are still enough left to be 'twixt both places? I'd have thought we had them all pretty well corralled into our respective dropzones and that the 'twixt parts were safe. Alas.

As for pizza, I'm not sure who's holding the contraband. So I don't know what fortification (s)he found. But no one found any from my hearth because I was busy finding old friends. But I thank you for suggesting that the consuming of my pizza will aid in keeping ones wits about. Do you think it's a marketable point?

Where'd the sign go? My guesses are: The new thief has been reading this thread and liked the notion enough to act; the first thief/current owner (one and the same?) has been reading this thread too and decided to put it in safekeeping; it fell behind the lockers upon which it was perched when its picture was snapped, and I was too damn lazy to double check once that thought hit me; none of the above.

This sign, now on display at a dropzone (in Florida), will perhaps bring back some memories.

Last I heard the city said no way in hell.

Judging by current situations, I think they lost every effort.

Anyone from the early days of the Hills should remember the back wall of the loft in the packing area. That wall was signed by hundreds of people, some long gone and some still kicking.
I often wonder where that went or if it were destroyed when they tore the building down.
