Re: [DSE] Question for running BOD members [In reply to] Can't Post

In reply to:
Thank you for your belief in me, Jack and Jerry.
I have not considered running for the BOD.

In reply to:

Your welcome.
Smack! Now you don't have a choice but to consider it. Wink

I'm pondering the thought now. I'm not entirely sure that I'd be the right person.
In reply to:

A lot of us are pretty damn sure about it!

I don't have any of the military connections,
In reply to:

With all respect to our brothers and sisters in uniform, you don't need military connections. And I have a sneaking suspicion you will find that you have a lot of support from the military community.

...and I don't have any of the party connections that seem to go hand in hand with being a member of the BOD.

That's a good thing!

Run Douglas run!!!!!

I concur with much of what Jack says.

However...

Adding you to the mix could in fact have, as you mentioned, a deleterious effect on other candidacies that you consider to be important.

Also, you now have about 10 votes on the dork zone, and an unknown number of PM pledges. You will need 500-600 votes to become one of the top 22 if I correctly recall the lowest qualifying number during the last eleciton. So you have to ask yourself - and those "yes" votes: can each of those DZ/PM "yes" votes get another 30, 40, or 50 votes for you between now and the end of election days?

Whatever the answer, it's a big mountain to climb in a short period of time and while i'm not saying you couldn't do it, i think you hit the key factor right on the head earlier in this thread:

will you be more effective on or off the board?

I vote for the latter -- at this time -- for two reasons:

1) your energy, passion and knowledge will be subsumed and/or diluted and/or blunted and/or restricted if you become one of 22 BOD members instead of remaining The-One-And-Only-SPOT; and

2) the energy, passion and knowledge of those already-in-the-bag DZ/PM yes votes could be better spent -- at this time -- on: a) actually putting together a business plan to do what you want to do; and b) on "opposition research" to concretely show that the efforts and peeps-in-charge-so-far are in fact (and not just opinion) a waste of time, resources and opportunity.

Cool

I gotta respectfully disagree again Robin~ Wink

I for one am hoping Spot WILL throw his hat in the ring, I think he's the right guy at the right time with the right motivation and the right skills & experience to shake up the 'status quo' slide the organization seems to be experiencing at the hands of some of the current BTDT board.

I believe we need MORE people in there with real world business experience that understand the concept of maximizing available resources innovatively for effective and measurable results.

I'm thinking maybe it's TIME for an 'average Joe' relatively new jumper with no business interests regarding the direction taken by the board...to poke a nose in, with his only interest being the overall welfare of the organization and the goal of growing it with the intent purpose of serving the membership majority.

Which, let's face it is comprised of mostly people just like Spot...FUN jumpers.

I for one am getting a bit frustrated with the mushroom treatment regarding the 'none of your business' attitude prevalent in many areas that at least from the cheap seats appear to be nothing more than a CYA-smokescreen, because some of the people runnin' this thing are quite possibly under qualified, inefficient or darn right lazy in the performance of the duties we pay them to do...they HAVE to know it, they just don't want US to know it.

I know when I ran a business...the goal was to get as much out of not only every dollar, but efficient production out of every moment of time an employee was 'supposed' to be working.

Sometimes it meant helping them to work smarter not harder.

~ sometimes if it was a critical position regarding achieving the 'bottom line' goal...be it web design/marketing, shipping or even driving a delivery truck, and the person in the position wasn't qualified to be there, I made sure someone who IS qualified took over.

Ya would think the USPA is the freakin' POST OFFICE sometimes!

This is a MEMBERSHIP organization, not a good ole boy hierarchy to be used as a tool for monetary or political self-advancement...

~There was a movement by a block of candidates awhile back calling themselves the 'Group for Change'.

I asked many them (and some of their supporters) "WHAT change do you have in mind"

What are your goals...what exactly do you want to change and what would you change it to?

HOW would you implement that change and how would you propose to measure the results of said change...

Crickets!

~nothing but fuckin' crickets chirping was all I heard back.

ASK SPOT those questions...
I did a while back, I had to cut him off because if I didn't, we'd STILL be talking!

And as far as the needed votes goes, you and I both know, one does not have to 'use' the allotted number of votes available to them, and the thoughtful and creative use of SOME of those votes can easily tilt an election of this sort in a positive direction giving the candidates actually qualified and deserving...a chance to possibly MAKE some real and long over-due CHANGE.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd love nothing more than to~

SEE SPOT RUN!

Even at the peril of my own election chances.....lol, I would have to say that I think Douglas would be a great addition to the BOD.

Jim,

I concur pretty much 100 percent with everything you say (including discounting my point #1) ... except this:

"And as far as the needed votes goes, you and I both know, one does not have to 'use' the allotted number of votes available to them, and the thoughtful and creative use of SOME of those votes can easily tilt an election of this sort in a positive direction giving the candidates actually qualified and deserving..."

It's the logistical details behind this statement that represent the very big mountain DSE has to climb in a very short period of time, at the wrong time of year, with no organized support team... and in my experience (in another life, i do some political consulting), those urging him to run -- at this time -- are essentially saying, "Spot, ol' buddy, we love you, so grab your backpack, your Chapstick and a couple of Power Bars and go climb K2 for us. We'll help you get to base camp... no, wait... we'll help you get to Askole... no, wait, we'll help you get to Skardu... no wait, we'll drive you to LAX..."

As the old saying goes in the military:

Amateurs talk strategy.

Professionals figure out logistics.

Cool

Re: [TomNoonan] Question for running BOD members [In reply to] Can't Post

I appreciate the supportive words, Tom.
However...
Even though there has been a tremendous showing of support, I think the right thing to do is sit this one out.
There are a number of very good people running for ND and a few good people running for Regional that will be great.
The people running for ND... I don't want to be their "Ross Perot" and hand the chairs to people of lesser qualification through distracted votes.
So that said, the "Tom's" (Deacon and Noonan) have my votes.
Hopefully we can force some accountability in the USPA. If more folks on the admin side would respond and deal with issues the way Jim Crouch or Randy Ottinger do for example...the USPA would be a much more finely tuned machine.
With the evote...we have a great opportunity to change things up. Let's hope folks get out and vote!

Shit myself and do the best job I can.
And then run for real in two years when I'm following the very rules I want others to follow with regards to elections.
I'm not running, but I've been told by a few they've written me in anyway.

Given the interest you started and the feedback I saw and heard vs. those listed as running?
I'd say you have a fair shot at it.
Smile
Just promise me you wouldn't give ratings to folks who should have the pulled before they get them.

I'm already in somewhat hot water for not handing a rating to someone. Unsure
Thankfully the eval sheet is impartial.

I'm of the "you have to jump before you can receive a rating" vs the "I know you're a good jumper, here is a rating, buddy."
