I was there for a lengthy stay over the boogie last year and it was almost too much for me. I eat pretty balanced/homecooked/organic meals and showing up there eating all the pork fat and grease for 10 days was just too much for me! Make sure you bring some pepto!!

Going back again this year, but just for the week this time. Can't wait for beach sunset jumps!! Cool

I've been thinking about coming out to the boogie. Just curious about a couple things since I have never been to Puerto Rico. Lodging? Any reccomendations? I dont need all the extras, a place to sleep and recover will do. There was camping on the website's lodging ideas, is that a crazy idea? How do you get to the dz? I appreciate anyones help. Thanks

AMY!!!! I am SO glad your gonna be there. The week before the boogie I am gonna be on a cruise out of San Juan for 7 days, getting married in the middle on the island of St Croix. Can't wait for you to meet her.
We will be back from the cruise friday night. Meet you somewhere with the new wife for cocktails...

My wife and I went last year, several decent motels around the area - check the website - they always have some point-outs to good deals. The DZ is 45 mins to 1 hour drive from San Juan so you'll need to bum a ride or rent a car.

This is so cool. I shot a tandem video this weekend in San Marcos Texas of a really cool dude from PR. He said if I am ever in PR that he would hook me up.
I said " a matter of fact I am gonna be there in Feb, its possible I may need a ride or a place to stay." lol He said no problem.

Kinda neat the people you meet while working in skydiving.
I have traveled the North America, Europe and South America and have always had a friend somewhere. I love this sport!!!

Yea, check the website. The hotels they list are all pretty good. We stayed at the Punta Maracaya last year for a few of the nights and that seemed to be where the party was every night. The bar area was nice. I don't know about camping there. I don't think that is available at the airport, but you can check local places.

I stayed at the Punta Maracayo last year, too. It was pretty nice and I would stay there again if I had to. I rented a house on the beach this year. Cool

first year i stayed at the rosa del mar (maybe casa del mar? 20 mins from dz) it was nice...clean..pool on the roof..didnt bother us at all really and let us party...

second year was the villa real which is 5 mins from the dz...it was awesome as we had the whole top floor booked and it was just a constant party there at night..noone from the hotel gave a shit about the retarded noise coming from upstairs...the hotel was not as nice as the rosa del mar tho...

third year i went back to the villa real and they had me booked with my at the time girlfriend in the basement room with no windows and big ass roaches everywhere...we left and stayed with a friend at his beach house which ROCKED...

this year im staying at a friends house in pr....

regardless, if you have never been to the boogie, from a man who goes to a lot of boogies himself, i highly recommend this one and its the one constant that i have not missed since i started attending..

cant wait to see everyone and relive the dream one more time..

LaughLaughLaugh I ended up staying there with friends a couple of nights during the boogie when I couldn't drive.
They had one of the basement rooms and it was dark and quiet. I actually loved sleeping until 11am with
no sunlight waking my hungover ass up. But the roosters were another story. Unimpressed

And roaches?? OMG. So happy I didn't see any down there... and the guys never mentioned seeing them either. Shocked

A couple of the guys are staying there this year again. And had I not rented a beach house I would've stayed there
because it is so close to the DZ. One glimpse of a roach I would've freaked the fuck out and split though.... to where,
I haven't a clue!! Laugh

Uh oh... just thought of something. I really like the restaurant at the front of the hotel... now I'm gonna be thinking about
roaches when I go there again... YIKES!!

I hope so! If there was any chance of that happening - I do it in a heartbeat. A 8 hour trip (drive to airport, check-in, fly, etc) would turn into a 2 hour trip. Nice!

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try to be cool on my own. Crazy

I kinda understand what you're saying. I think there are a lot of seasoned regulars that come to this boogie and a tight knit wingsuit crowd, freefly crowd, etc, etc, after coming here with eachother year after year, but I didn't find anybody off standish. Then again I was the lone freeflyer with my head buried in the wingsuit corner with nobody else to jump with except a few of my Houston peeps that showed up. (Thanks to my fiance I'm a wingsuit groupie by association even though I freefly, and often find myself twidling my thumbs because I don't get my butt up out of the wingsuit den and find other freeflyers.... or I just drag him on a freefly jump to make me his own personal photo whore.) Laugh

Anytime you see my obnoxious baby blue and charcoal at any boogie (you can't miss it and as far as I know I've never seen anybody with colors quite like mine!) you are more than welcome to come grab me for beer, chit chat, jump, or whatever. Cool

Just mingle around down there and you'll find lots of people even if you're traveling without others from your DZ. If you want organizing get your name in at the asscrack of dawn-- thats all I have to say about that. But otherwise, just pop your head around and say hi!

Wish I was going this year. I'd already be looking forward to a jump with ya!

Ill be here! I live HERE!
If you dont want to waste precious money on lodging then Ill talk to a local that lives close to the DZ. He has a big ass farm and might let you camp around without any problems. Transportation from the airport to the DZ wont be a problem, let me know when youre arriving in PR and you can catch a ride with me. I dont know if I can skip work wednesday to friday to get to the DZ in time to jump, but I will be there for the wednesday and friday parties and will jump my ass off on the weekend. If you really want to enjoy Puerto Rico then I HIGHLY recommend anyone to rent a car. Maybe a bunch of you can get together and split the rental of a van.
I traded my lexus for a trashy old jeep cherokee so I can afford this crazy addiction ive got with skydiving and finally research a new product that permanently removes odors from vagies, so if the jeep runs down on the way to the DZ well just take a ride with AAA to the DZ.

Anyways, this might be my last year living in PR since I graduate next year =( so I wont miss out on my home boogie this year! Im new to skydiving, but with less then a year ive jumped in France, Holland, Virginia and Delaware... Puerto Rico takes the cake so far!

If anyone has any questions about lodging, etc., in PR ill be sure to help!

If this is the case I wish they'd make it "official". So glad I rented a house on the beach near the airport in Arecibo. Unimpressed

ETA: Another airport surely beats the alternative of no boogie at all.

Noooo.... no shushing!! Many of us have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on this trip. I'll be pissed if I have to drive
30 minutes the other way from the house I rented near the Arecibo DZ, especially since it's after the time frame that
I could've received at least a partial refund for cancelling the house and finding one closer to the other airport, if in fact it
has changed locations.

Spill it... what do you know?

Yes, the location has changed, its less then a 30 minute drive. The change from Arecibo to Vega Baja is effective. You can call Jason at 7878525757. You've got no idea... I live here in Puerto Rico and Vega Baja is fucking awesome... The beach there beats Arecibo's beach by a landslide... The parties are gonna be even better... Camping will be allowed as well as bonfires and what not. You should keep the rental home anyways since it beats a hotel. You can find one of the best resorts around Vega Baja as Dorado is side by side.

Take a look at the aerial pictures attached.

Ever been to Airport Cuylers? Rumor has it that the airport has changed to somewhere in Vega Baja....

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Noooo.... no shushing!!

And Dorado has many of the best hotels and tourist spots around Puerto Rico. Jet ski rentals, kayaking, badass golf courses (I hate golf anyways). Anyways, good priced hotels as well as cheap hotels can be found all around the area. In Arecibo, the hotels filled up in no time since there arent that many. Dorado hosts lots and LOTS of hotels within a 15 mile radius!

Official statement from XD [In reply to] Can't Post

We want to start out thanking everyone who's supported and attended this boogie throughout the years, spreading the word, and making it what it is. This years boogie promises to deliver everything you've heard about and experienced and more. There's some rumors and changes to the boogie that will now be addressed. Due to govermental changes, lack of support from the same government, port authority abuses in contracting and dealing with skydiving - the venue has changed location. We have been displaced and battling for access at our airport for the last 6 months, after having had access for the last 5 years, the way many boogie goers and regulars have come to know. This battle came to a head a month ago, where the issue became cancel the boogie, or move it...

For more than the obvious reasons, canceling was out of the question!!! We refuse to lose the momentum of this boogie (366 jumpers last year), and let down all the folks on their way here. The boogie will be in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico on a private airstrip. The strip is 25 to 30 minutes east ( closer to SJ) of the old location (Arecibo), on hwy 22, exit #32. Its named Cuylers, after the owner. We realize the inconvenience for a number of folks with reservations at area hotels, and tried to balance it against the inconvenience of not having the boogie. We again apologize for the inconvenience, and can only promise to deliver what devotees and new attendees have come to expect from this boogie and heard about. With the heavy port authority yoke off the boogie, and our own place to cut loose, this boogie promises to be like none before!!! On-site after hours drinking and parties, bonfires, on-site camping, all a reality now. The boogie rocked without it, how about now?!

We now have 3 beach landing areas, with a natural swoop cove 200' across and bordered by sand. For the lesser experienced, we have a 1 1/2 mile long beach that runs paralell to the wind. Stay tuned for google earth coordinates to all 3 loacations and see what it's all about!!! This boogie had a 3 pronged salvation that consisted of a generous man with an awesome 3,800' grass strip, the local FAA FSDO and local ATC management, and their coordinated efforts to make this happen.

Thank you,
Jason Gonzalez, DZO (jason@xtremedivers.com)
Viviana De Jesus, DZ Manager (viviana@xtremedivers.com)

This location is for the Puerto Rico Freefall Festival 2010. We are still going to contract with Port Authority at the airport.

I have called a few hotels in the area and they are either booked because of San Valentine's Day or their rates are a bit higher and they don't have all days available. However, this area (Vega Baja) has many house/apartment for rent. Here are some numbers in the area:
Dorado Beach : 787-796-1234
Aquarius 787-626-0700
More information Soon.

the location is pretty simple:
search in google maps for:
Pr-697, Puerto Rico

the inn is on that small street

Also, the new location of the boogie is listed on google maps, search for:
"xtremedivers" without the space in between or search for:
"skydiving, puerto rico" and youll get the exact spot the boogie will be at!

After the initial shock to my total control freak self with my planning for this trip, I see the many, many positives.

It's going to be a great time!!

* We're still going to the boogie!
* We're still going to be warm and not in NJ freezing our asses off!
* We're still going to be seeing old friends and making new friends along the way.
* We'll be seeing new areas of Puerto Rico that we may not have encountered until this change. Lots of new restaurants to check out and locals to meet.
* I have much appreciation and respect for the work that goes into organizing this event. I work for the government so I understand what a hassle it can be. Wink

I'm really glad that the boogie is still a go and I really hope we can all make the best of the changes and still skydive, party and make lots of fun 2010 memories!!

~Karen

PS - 22 days 'til San Juan/Arecibo/Vega Baja/Vieques/Rincon Cool

We reserve at Hotel villa Real in Arecibo. Is ok to stay there for the boogie, or it is recommanded to move near de DZ?
Is somebody in the same situation as me?

I know people who are booked there and are staying put. It's a little bit of a drive to the airport in Vega Baja
but I wouldn't change locations.

My line of thinking is why hurt the Arecibo merchants so close to the date of the event? I bet they were
counting on us spending our money there as much as we were counting on being in Arecibo again this year.

If there's a possibility the boogie could be back in Arecibo next year I certainly wouldn't want to burn any
bridges with the hotel people or landlords and not have them rent to us next year for fear of the same
situation...

Just my two cents. Smile

I recommend that you stay in villa real! its a nice hotel and their used to crazy people like us on their hotel! Arecibo is less than 30 minutes from the new location and the only close spot to the new DZ is some small inn which is full. Other than that, youve got the Hyatt or the embassy and their all expensive. Arecibo is lots of fun so I really recommend you to stay put!

Yes, camping WILL be allowed.

Also, I checked with the Hyatt.
I got a rate for $165.00 a night with continental breakfast included, free water and soda, free parking and no hidden fees.
There are 20 rooms available. I will post the contact info soon cause the manager of the hotel asked for a meeting before giving this rate out. It was 220 a night and she lowered the rate to $165.00.
This is one of the nicest hotels around the Dorado area, if not, the second best in Dorado. The best being the embassy suites.

I got a studio room at the Hyatt for avg $153 per night at the normal web rate. It has one bed and one fold out sofa bed.

Still a little more than I'd like to spend, but at least it was easy to do. I called several of the numbers in this thread and got no reply and at one of them somebody kept picking up the phone and not saying anything. At least the Hyatt is easy to deal with, even if it is a class up from my usual accommodations.

Hi. I am working with the Embassy Suits to get a discounted rate lower than $155 so as soon as I get it (tomorrow) I will post more information.

Fpr more areas, goggle towns of Dorado, Vega Baja and Manati. These are close by to the DZ. We are working on posting the directions soon. The welcoming party is being moved to Dorado (next town of Vega Baja at the Corozo Sports Bar and Grill.

Additionally, we would like to know how many people are interesting camping at the dz. We need to build some showers and would like to leave enough space for camping or not so much if not many people are thinking on doing it. Please send me an email if you are seriously considering in camping at the dz at viv.dejesus@gmail.com

There's so many more websites than the one Efrain mentioned. Google results for "Puerto Rico Vacation Rentals" are below:

http://www.google.com/...&oq=&aqi=g10

I would search for rentals on the northern coast, using the towns Viviana mentioned in the post a couple above me. I would
also go as far west along the northern coast as Hatillo if you have a rental car... but that's just me.

Good luck!! Cool

Re: [devarona] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Devarona.

Saw your thread here and thought, here a person who can help me with some answers. Im arriving from Sweden (through LA) to Pureto Rico the 9th of February to visit the boogie for the first time. Ive never been to PR before so Im thankful for every pointers I can get. I was planning to camp at the dropzone to save some money, is that a good idea or is there a hostel or hotel nearby that you can rent for good money?? (I want to be able to lock in my gear at night, is there a good place at the DZ?) Also, transportation from the airpoort to the DZ, whats the easiest way? Can you cook your own food at the DZ or is there a good place to buy your meals? And of course a big question, where will all the parties be held ;-) All at the DZ ??

Im very thankful for every help I can get!!

Really looking forward to the boogie, looks like crazy fun!!

Peace // David Cool

Wrote a thread to Devarona for some answers (see the latest), but you cant get to many skydiving friends Wink , thankful for any help I can get.

Hey David...you didn't asked me, but I can help.
Are you coming alone?
The DZ is about 30min drive west from San Juan and you will need a rental car. Camping is allowed on the DZ and that's what some of us are doing. There's gonna be food vendors at the boogie and there's plenty of other places to eat close by. The parties I'm not sure about this year, I guess some will be at the DZ and others at some place close.
For locking up your gear, you can use your car or your tent, there will be security.

If you are coming alone, and depending on what time you arrive on the 9th, MAYBE I can help with the transportation and you can use the rental car $$$ for more jumps. I'm leaving San Juan early afternoon on the 9th, I guess at around 3-4pm.

Hi!

Thanks for your answer.

Yeah, Im coming alone. If you could help me with transportation it would be great! I rather skydive than drive you know ;-) I arrive at San Juan airport at 1 pm so maybe that could work perfectly! Let me know about that!
So there is some people camping anyway, cool. I checked around and the cheapest hotel I found was like 100 a night, a lot of money. Do you know the camping fee??

why do you think you can't get 20?
you're going to be there for the entire duration of the event, correct?
last year I got over 20 jumps in and that's with being lazy, without jumping the first day cause it was windy, and then slow calls on the weekend cause 2 aircraft were not enough anymore (and we had a big group so it was harder to manifest)... and still got to jump a lot. I'm sure you can get 20 jumps in, no problem. Going for high altitude loads in the morning helps... cause they determine you to wake up early even after all that partying.
5 jumps a day for 4 days is easily doable. Even 6 a day is not pushing it that bad when there's lots of load organizers to keep you going.
I say go for it!

From the site:
http://www.xtremedivers.com/vegabaja.shtml

The landing area/airport looks narrow but is long.

Outs seem limited directly adjacent to the airport but past the trees looks like some landing area that could be used.

If winds are high, you can go with the wind a long ways to find a good landing are if needed. Smile

I am not going to be there, but that airfield looks mighty tight to be running this type of event.

According to the historical website the runway was 4000' long. By looking at the Google Earth picture, all those obstructions give about 2000' useable. And by the picture that useable has trees growing in the middle of it.
3 otters w/ 23 per load. That's alot of traffic for that little area.

Every year I've been to PR boogie in Arecibo, the wind is always coming from west east. I hope it's the same here. If it was somehow north or south (unlikely, I think), there could be nasty turbulence from all those trees surrounding the narrow landing area.

I'd rather land on the beach every time! Cool 2-3 beach jumps a day is better than 5 airport jumps. Wink

Thats my plan. Considering the beach landing area is only 1 mile away, I dont see any reason not to do 5 beach jumps a day.

Aww, I was hoping it would be the whole 4 hours compressed to 1 minute timelapse. Laugh What are you making, the pad for the tent?

That field is going to get VERY muddy if it rains, and all that mud will get tracked into the tent. Pirate

I turned off before landing but it was ok for me, though I do not plan to land on the strip again! Its all rocky and shit, with some sand but if you see the runway, all the way to the other end, theres a nice field of grass where i will be landing for the entire boogie. You have to walk across the parking lot but its no biggie, I prefer to be more safe! Ive seen guys with the same amount of jumps I got (80s) getting their asses hit kind of hard so I recommend that everyone that not always lands on their feet to use the area at the other side of the runway so we can all enjoy this boogie without any accidents! I did land out today and I but slided since the area I landed had high grass and I couldn't run in it but it was as soft as a pillow. You dont even have to search for outs on your car cause there are PLENTY. The area I landed today was huuuge and the grass was tall and soft since its that shit you feed cows and what not. Remember guys, this place made the boogie possible and taking the sandy runway aside, its one hell of an awesome place to jump! We all had so much fun today! I cant wait for Wednesday! See you all soon!

PD: The landing patterns will be better discussed at the boogie, landing on the runway is not unsafe as it has a dirt field on the right but again, there is a nice grass field, for those unexperienced, that I recommend landing on. Its my own opinion, ill let you guys check it out yourselves on the boogie.

What an awesome boogie!

one little thing though... Anybody happen to grab the wrong red/black Rums of PR bag?? I had mine lying somewhere in the packing area and when I landed from the last load it was gone... I'm assuming someone might have grabbed it by mistake.
So if you have it... and there's a little red hard drive inside, a bunch of gopro mounts, sunscreen, I dunno what else... please please please let me know! I will give you a reward! I just want some files off that hard drive... like all my footage from the first day of the boogie, for example.

I did not witness any of them firsthand but I heard of a femur and a heel. I would imagine the reason was that they contacted the ground too hard. Unimpressed

More specifically, the main LZ was a narrow asphalt field with trees creating wind shear at 20-30ft. Good thing I never landed there... most of us wingsuiters went to the beach every single time. Nice and soft... just don't fall in the 15ft surf and drown!

Re: [4chewnate] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

At the risk of getting several replies to my post I am going to state the puerto rico boogie as I saw it. The runway was just adequate and the landing area really sucked. Just ask the many people with broken bones and ripped jump suits cuts and bruises. The DZ was thrown together last minute and the landing area was gravel and hard dirt and not large enough for most a and b license holders. Most, if not all, did not want to land at the dz. The beach was my choice and I had no problems, however when the low time jumpers started crashing they closed it down to all, even the pro and d license holders. The winds were cross winds for the entire boogie so most people, trained to land into the wind, tried landing at the dz and on the beach heading into the trees (at both landing areas). The planes should have been shut down and everyone told not to land into the wind at either landing area and to land crosswind. If you cannot do a crosswind landing, then dont jump. Then fire the planes back up again. At the dz if you landed short (into the wind like most did) you were on the runway. If you went long you ended up in the trees, (same at both landing areas.) If you were going long, I saw a lot of people stop flaring to avoid the landing flair (swoop) into the trees, thus pounding in...on gravel. I saw people doing the same on the beach however if you did come up short you were in the ocean. I personally saw two people land just beyond the water triumphantly, and then their canopy fell behind them into the surf and then the receding water dragged them in. In this case they should have cut away and then grabbed their canopy by the fabric from behind and easily pulled it out of the water. They did not do this and they had several spectators try and drag a 400 pound canopy full of water out by the lines. They fought the surf and the skydiver was dragged in and out several times. Probably a ripped canopy. I know three girls that went to help a skydiver who had their canopy caught in the trees on the dz. When they returned their purses were gone...bad security. The trolly did not run all the time and you had to find your own ride back from the beach. This wouldnt be so bad but you never knew when the trolly wasnt running and when to arrange for your own ride. The area for the dz was shared with some sort of park for locals so there were too many non skydivers taking up all the parking and creating a 15 minute drive out the short drive to get out of the dz with really messed up parking. This will probably end up being the permanent DZ for xtreme divers and it will be great for a cessna and 25 jumpers 4 or 5 at a time. It is not equipped for a boogie at this moment. The owners will have to do a lot of work to make it boogie caliber...lets hope they dont wait til last minute for 2011. My girlfriend with 63 jumps could not jump the safer beach landing area (c license or better) and did not want to land at the small gravel dz landing area. She did not get any jumps in. We did not get a welcome bag this year or last year. If you went up with the plane and for some reason had to come down you did not get a refund. I would really love to support any skydiving related function but this one made it difficult.

Scott, a lot of what you say is true, unfortunately.

But, you say several times that "most" people tried landing into the wind (toward the south) at the DZ and at the beach. This isn't true. I saw a few fools landing south at the beach (some in the bushes and some in the water) but that was only a few... and at the DZ I only saw one person who didn't land parallel to the runway (he was heading north and landed in trees)... though it did seem people were coming in BOTH directions parallel to the runway every load.

I agree about not landing at the DZ... I only went to the beach. And the crowds of vehicles in the entry way were indeed VERY frustrating. Interest from whuffos is great, but there had to be 5 whuffos for every jumper... there was hardly even room to walk, let alone get a car out of there...

I've done many beach jumps on at least 7 different beaches.

The only times I didn't land parallel with the water was possibly at Wildwood New Jersey which is HUGE and one other time at another beach when I had a canopy collapse over the water (turbulence + too deep of brakes like an idiot) and barely made the wet sand.

Every place I've been to it's always been pattern over the water, land up the beach or down the beach.

Crosswind landings on sand are very forgiving. Even done a few downwinders and just sugar cookied... Smile

Hope they have this boogie again as I'd like to go next year. Smile

Since my girlfriend wasnt jumping I spent several hours on the beach for two seperate days. I know most people land and then leave, so maybe they didnt see as much as I did. I did not spend a lot of time at the dz but the short amount of time I did spend there I saw a lot of people landing hard and in the trees (canopies mostly) and there were a lot of rips cuts and bruises. When I say most people I was talking about the low timers...the swoopers and d and pro rating holders were having a blast. My two beach landings were great I jump a velo 84, not very affected by the winds.

I went to Emerald Coast's Beach Boogie one memorial weekend where every other load was going to the beach over the Florabama bar. I made like 6 beach jumps in one day. The interesting thing was, the wind changed every damn jump. I made at least one landing in each direction - north south east and west. Being somewhat of a personal accuracy expert, I had no problems. However, not everybody can hit the beach flying perpendicular to it, especially if it's only 20 yards wide or so. This is where knowing how to land crosswind comes into play.

I agree it sucked, remember this was a forest 2 weeks ago, but 100' wide x 1000'+ long is not small for any license. If some people get fixated on landing close to the packing tents and they didnt have the skill, thats their bad decission. I guess some people didnt looked or understand the aerial picture showing the loooong landing area.

Quote:

I did all my jumps at the beach, and it was closed for a few hours because the tide, mixed with the big swell was making the landing zone narrower, not because of low timers crashing. When the tide stopped coming up, the beach was open again.

Quote:

The winds, when they were a factor (10mph+), were parallel to the runway and the beach. The few times when it was variable it was slow enough to not make any difference if they were cross or not. Anyway, landing patterns were discussed in the loading tent prior to boarding the plane on ALL my jumps, and it was repeated many many times thru the speakers at the DZ, if they decided to go againts the plan thats their bad decission again. They should know not to board the plane if they are not comfortable with 5mph cross wind landings.

If I go up in the plane intending to jump and the dz calls it because of clouds or the surf is too high and there are a lot of skydivers wearing sandles or even bare footed and they cant land in the gravel provided landing area and they have to ride the plane down then they should be on the next load that goes up with the ticket from the previous load. Yes you could probably say be prepared and dont wear sandles or be barefoot. I always wear shoes but lots dont like to especially when landing in the sand.

The cypres flags were facing north every time I looked at them. I agree coming from chicago the winds were not high but again think about how many 100 jump and under skydivers there were there. They also have larger canopies then we do. The landing area was 1000 feet long but the winds were cross and I dont think 100 feet wide is large. Who cares how large it is when the whole 100 by 1000 is ALL gravel and hard pack clumped dirt who wants to land there.
I think most paid top jump prices and top dollar registration fees for a sub par dz. If the owners couldnt get it up to par in time then all fees and possibly landing with the plane should have been taken in consideration.

Re: [scottayerSDC] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

I concur on the landing area at the dropzone, as well as the landing with the plane part. I landed there once, when they shut down the beach because of the surf and pounded it in pretty hard. Not saying that the pounding in part is the dropzone's fault, but landing there was very very sketchy. From the minute I saw that landing area, I pretty much classified it as my last resort out.

However, that being said, I think that they did the best that they could, and the beach landings pretty much made up for the shitty landing area at the dropzone. If you were landing at the beach, there was absolutely no reason to not do a crosswind landing, the winds never went over 10 miles an hour at the very most. It seemed that the people that pounded it in, landed in trees, or got dragged into the surf were the people that were overly focused on landing into the wind.

This was a great event. While the innitial organization could have been a little better, they did a good job bringing in organizers, keeping the planes running, getting the trolleys to pick us up from the beach, and organizing the parties. The only day the trolleys were an issue was Sunday, but I actually liked hitching rides from the locals, and never had an issue getting back to the dz.

I think overall this was an awesome boogie, and I can't wait until next year!

Yep, the west end of the runway covered in grass. It was closed for landing on Saturday because of a church activity, but I dont remember seeing anyone landing there the other 4 days.
The main landing area sucked, I agree there. What Im saying is that there were options and alternate landing areas, and people didnt use them. I made all my jumps on the beach except 1 were I choose to land on a close by field. I was offered a ride before I could pick up my canopy, and that was the case for everyone who landed out. Locals were fighting to give us rides and take pictures.

And thats all I have to saySmile

There was a google earth map of the dz on the xtreme divers website go there and find the alternate landing areas. We were told that the landing area where all the locals were flying kites was not for us to land in. Obviously if it were an emergency I would but is ripping a jumpsuit or cuts and bruises an emergency? If it were everyone would have been landing in the kite field.

OK you say however they made up for the shitty dz landing area for the great beach landings, what about the a and b license holders that could not land there??? My girlfriend and many other low timers spent a lot of money in airfare hotel and registration. since no one wanted to land at the dz my girlfriend opted to not jump at all. We already paid the $55.00 reg fee. Since she wasnt jumping I did not jump as much as I would have and I went to the beach (not the worst alternative) but that is not the purpose of the trip. Yes I agree it is a great place to jump for beach jumps and c and d license holders, but everybody else got screwed.

I think you're right, I didn't even think about the A and B license holders. I thought it was great, but that's probably because all but one of my landings were on the beach. Quite honestly, I think the younger jumpers would have been safer and better off landing at the beach rather than the dz. Hopefully, next year the boogie will be organized a little better. I would have been pissed off too if I flew all the way to Puerto Rico thinking I could land on the beach only to be told that I had to land at one of the worst landing areas I've ever seen.

Re: [scottayerSDC] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

In reply to:

Hi Scott, this is Viviana, one of the organizers's for the PR boogie also a provider for Rook Nelson's Winter money maker and you are one of his employee's and you want to put our event down because we took the necessary precautions with the novice? I understand everyone can HAVE opions and you have made yours very clear. Obviously your "new Skydiving Girlfriend" (as you stated you came last year) with 68 jumps was not qualified to do beach jumps based on our ocean and the wind conditions on the boogie dates. Forget what the USPA says and other Beach Boogie events....Being the DZ Manager, a Girlfriend of a DZO and a low jumper at one point; he made the decisions for me but his jumping didn't conflict/prevent him from jumping. All organizers, with more experience than you made decisions based on the water condition coming into the landing area and wind conditions. The ocean at this beach is very rough and decistions were made constantly. If you had yours, you should have come to the manifest table.

You talk about the Goody bag which was never promised but seemed this was so important to you! You forget to mention ALL the positive things about our event, HAVING free beer nightly, a Free Rums
of PR party on friday night; and a Saturday beach party w/ catering, free beer and shots. All this included on our registratoin of $55.00. I wonder if you really appreciate like MOST people do, retruning and thanking us regardless if we make money on this event or not... Thank you for coming for the second time, we are a very well organized Company that has gone through some political changes...and we hope to do better every year as an aspect of the event. I will never leave the organization part for the last minute as you have mentioned!

Re: [vivfreeflying] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

Vivianna, First off what my opinions are have nothing to do with Rook, they are my opinions based on my skydiving experience. For you to insinuate that Rooks future "winter money maker" would be in jeopardy because of my opinions is completely unprofessional. I have stated in several posts that the weather is great and the boogie is great for the very experienced skydiver. My two skydives were awesome and the beach landings were great...for me. Some of the posts were removed by skymama because of some personal attacks on myself and on my girlfriend in which I replied very aggressively in a personal matter. Yes skymama should have reacted the way she did. My complaint stated the obvious. The main complaint was a bad, and in my opinion, dangerous landing area for the novice. I know a lot of novices at the boogie that did not jump because of the landing area at the dz. Had more novices jumped at your safe dz landing area there would have been more injuries. So I do disagree with your philosophy of protecting the novice. I know there were multiple landings on the beach by people that did not have a c or higher rating. Also I am not such a jerk boyfriend to leave my girlfriend sitting idle while I have a great time funjumping during valentines weekend. I stated that everyone was nice and the main complaint was that the landing area was inadequate for the low timers. There were too many injuries at the dz. Beach jumps are made at the skydivers discretion so I wasnt really speaking about the beach landings. Neither my girlfriend or I drink so I really dont care about the free alcohol and if you read one of the latter posts I didnt even really want the welcome basket it was the principle. If something is advertised it should be provided or some logical explanation as to why it cant/wont be provided. Two years in a row nothing was stated to us as to why others received something and we didnt. We paid $55.00 each plus my two jumps for a total of $160.00 for only two jumps. I would never have asked for a refund for my girlfriends reg. fee because that was not the real complaint. This was first and foremost a skydiving trip, not a beach vacation, not a sightseeing tour and not a resort escape and I also want to include not a drinkfest. I must say that with the great weather all the aforementioned alternatives were great but again it was not the purpose of the trip. For this to have been a successful skydiving trip a better landing area would have made all the difference. My complaint was not even for myself but for all low timers. Any dropzone has the right to stop jumping as a result of weather, waves, tide etc. I was told on the one occasion that the beach was closing because too many people were pounding in. Whether that is correct I dont know but it came from a reliable source. This was never the complaint. I am from the midwest and I know we all want everything too quickly and some of us can be uptight about it. Puerto Rico seems very laidback and take your time...it'll get done. When it doesnt get done I know I am one of the first to ask why was everything last minute. I am not bitter at the dropzone its owners or affiliates or the puerto ricans. There is such thing as constructive critisism. Had there been a better landing area at the dz We would love to come back. While I was on the subject I brought up other points of concern, agree with them or fight them that is your perogative. I never made it personal and I really dont mind if others come at me personally. I will defend myself though.

Viv and Jason,
You guys rock. You made the boogie happen under extremely difficult issues. Based on the number of people that came in 2009, you made the right call bringing in a third otter. Who could have guest that a winter storm in the states would prevent so many people from making the trip. It's always a crap shoot with boogies no matter how much planning you make. I'm glad we did not have to go to the grass/woods airport in Vega Baja. From what I saw from the air, it would have been tricky. My hat off to Jason and your local guys for getting the airport in the shape you did in only 8 days. I am impressed. I know you guys are working hard on making the new area bigger and more boogie friendly for 2011. Loved the beach set up. As always your staff was top notch.
I know you guys had to go into the red on this one and I hope my free organizer fee helps out.
Hang in there, good things come to good people.

PS: Father is well, thanks to all who were concerned.

I personally had a blast! I'll be coming next year for sure. The dz landing area wasnt the greatest but given the short time frame to get it together I was more than understanding and it was certainly better than the boogie being cancelled. Low or high jump numbers we should all have an understanding of our limits and if you are unsure about winds, don't jump or at least stand by and watch how others are landing before you throw yourself on a load. I did a hop n pop into the beach on Sat. by myself and when I got back to the dz recommended that beach landings be put off till the surf came down, which they were. I didn't have a problem with the cross wind into a tight area but recommended it based on an entire otter load trying to land there. I then sat for awhile that day because I didn't like the combination of conditions. I'm sure things will be improved next year and I'd like to thank the staff for making it happen this year! You all put in a lot of hard work and time just to make it happen.

Weather Happens, Last Minute Changes Happen, Jump Limits get enforced. Ultimately its the individual who decides if the condions are appropriate for their skill level. You could have driven over to the beach to evaluate the landing conditions yourself. Why are you putting the responisbilitiy for your own decisions off on someone else?

Event Organizers organize EVENTS not the WEATHER. How many events have YOU organized??? You would not be giving so much grief if you've ever tried yourself.

Sounds like you expect perfection and no complications to arrise at an event for you or your girlfriend to be able to enjoy yourselves. Sounds Like you and your girlfriend may not be cut out for Boogies.

Damn you were in Puerto Rico man. If the Boogie wasn't working out for you then go site seeing or something. There's much more to do in this beautiful place than jumping.

I will simplify it for everyone now. If you went to this Boogie and you were an A or B license holder you couldnt land at the beach and the main DZ landing area was very small for low timers and consisted of mostly gravel and usually had cross wind landings. When this Boogie was at Arecibo it was great I was there. I went back to the Boogie because I liked evrything about it. The DZ landing Area sucked. YES all the high time jumpers dont care abouty the DZ landing area because they could land at the beach or handle the small dz landing area. Of course the c and d license holders would love this boogie it was for them...it was not for the low time jumper.

Re: [hparrish] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

When and where did you read that I was complaining about the weather. Why would any skydiver complain about weather???? I landed at the beach and had a great time because I have a d license. My girlfriend has 63 jumps and the beach landing was not available to her and the dz area sucked and she did not want to rip her jumpsuit or grind skin off landing in gravel. She also halted her dz landing because she did not want to land on the runway or in the trees. Therefore there was no responsibility put on anyone but ourselves. I jumped at the beach on my decision and it was great. That's because I have a d license. The landing area provided for a and b license holders sucked and most a and b license holders opted to not jump. That is what I put onto the people putting on the Boogie. They did not provide an adequate landing area for the a and b holders that were required to land there. I organize two events every year at my DZ for the past 6 or 7 years. I dont wait til last minute to start. In fact I have already started all the preliminary work for both of my events. When there is money exchanging hands I do try and provide perfection. I have been to several boogies across the country and this one was just as good as the rest except that "THE LANDING AREA SUCKED FOR LOW TIMERS"
Yes since the boogie was not working out we did do other things and I am not in any way complaining about that. WE HAD A GREAT TIME IN PUERTO RICO. Neither one of us is bitter in any way we are just complaining about the landing area. I am not going to sugar coat anything so maybe it sounds like I am angry...I am not. We have great memories of many things that we did. We had a blast!! We saw arecibo, the light house, ponce, surfed, swam, bio bay, great food, awesome restuarants, old San Juan ...unfortunately none of them were attributed to the DZ. In all actuality what you are saying is if you are a low time jumper dont go to Puerto Rico for the Boogie, go to Puerto Rico for Puerto Rico. Well thats great Puerto Rico is the DZ's back up plan But I didnt go to puerto rico to hang at the resorts pool or drink free booze, or jet ski or surf or any of the fun things Puerto Rico has to offer I wanted my girlfriend to do the one thing that Puerto Rico doesnt offer to low time jumpers...Skydiving. When the boogie was at Arecibo people complained that there werent enough airplanes and that wait times were WAY too long. I was there and that was a fact but I never complained about it...others did and what did the DZ do??? They got a third Otter for the 2010 boogie. So now I am complaining that the dz landing area is not good...does anyone understand this? Are there any low time jumpers that agree with me?? I have not heard one person, including the dz owners, say "yes the dz landing area was bad it WILL be better next year" No excuses no explainations of why it was bad, just They will fix it or We will fix it. When small things pertain to health and welfare of people (skydivers) why should we settle for anything less than the best I dont want to make chicken salad out of chicken shit, that's not why I go on vacation. I/we all have a choice to go somewhere else where we dont have to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

You've complained about the crosswind at the DZ several times now. That is indeed part of the weather.

I've been to this boogie 5 years in a row now, and the wind has ALWAYS been coming out of the east. The only reason it was different this year was because of the cold front coming from the US. Again, part of the weather.

The main landing area wasn't really very small. It was long and narrow. Area is the combination of both length and width. Again, the weather (crosswind) made it undesirable.

I will agree with you that the gravel surface was not desirable, and was not part of the weather.

Re: [scottayerSDC] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the point that Scott was trying to make about the crosswind landing is this: for the C and D holders, a crosswind landing into a narrow landing area, bordered by the runway and trees, is not as stressful of a situation as it would be to lower number jumpers, and really was not even an issuse as the beach was an option to them. As a B license holder, I opted not to jump, as I was not willing to risk injury or damage to my equipment and the beach was not an option for me. My landings are not consistant yet, and I slide as many as I stand up. And jumping near the ocean, at a new DZ, whit a tight, poorly graded landing area, can be a little overwhelming, at least it was in my case. I have jumped at boogies with larger numbers of aircraft and people in the air, so that is not a stressor for me.

It simply was not an event appropriate for the novice jumper. I have heard great things about this boogie in the past, I intend to attend again in the future. Given the circumstances, they were able to pull of a pretty amazing event, with very little advance notice of location change.

Not true. I refused to land at the airport (more to do with wind shear from the trees than the actual crosswind part of the landing), and a friend with 2000+ jumps nearly broke his heel the one time he landed at the airport. An advanced license does not fix the weather.

The landing area sumbitted was supposed to be a lot bigger. Had it been bigger, like it was supposed to be, the trees and the wind (and the cross wind landings) would not have been a problem at the DZ. So, inadvertently the size of the opted smaller landing area made the weather a problem. AGAIN I was not blaming the weather I was blaming the landing area construction making the weather a problem. AGAIN why would any skydiver complain about the weather?? Yes the AREA in square feet was big but it was long and very narrow and made of gravel and yes the wind was cross forcing inexperienced jumpers to either not jump or crash in to gravel by either attempting a forced crosswind or going short and biffing or going long and sliding into trees. The landing area sucked I wonder if they will fix it for next year? You read Duckies post (above). Because Duckie is inexperienced duckie opted to not jump that is a big let down from all the hype of going to an exotic DZ and not having the experience to jump. Did Duckie say they wouldnt go back?? NO they are probably hoping they will be more experienced by then. What about the next a or b license holder that takes duckies place?

Duckie,
I am not thanking you for agreeing with me I am thanking you for being one of the few a or b license holders to reply. As I have been stating, it was not a good landing area for the novice jumper. Had the landing area been wider it wouild not have been a problem. The crosswind would have been eliminated by the wider landing area. The gravel speaks for itself. There are probably a lot of c and d license holders that didnt even think about sliding it in on their butts. As F Duckie stated, the duck will return. I am still concerned with the a or b license holders replacing the duck. This is not so hard to understand is it. It's somewhat obvious that the jumpers that understand what I am saying are novice jumpers and the jumpers that do not understand what I am saying are experienced jumpers. It is sad that this jumper got really excited about jumping in Puerto Rico and couldnt. I am sure they found other things to do but the fact remains that they couldnt do what the intention of the trip was...to jump.

OK but the a or b license holder that refuses to land at the dz cannot jump, you still could. Listen to what you are saying (above) Your friend would not have almost broken his ankle if the landing area was wider. This happened to a person with 2000+ jumps and the width of the landing area had a substantial impact (no pun intended) on him!!! Saying an advanced license doesnt fix the weather does not help promote your argument, because I never hinted at the notion. The landing area sucked and even a guy with 2000+ jumps had a hard time with it. I bet he never landed at the dz again! Yet he had the option to land elsewhere. I wonder if they will fix it for next year?
In reply to:

The event was plenty appropriate... the weather was not.
No the landing area was not appropriate just as 111 stated. The landing area was so narrow that the trees that lined the very edge caused wind shear that caused a jumper with 2000+ jumps to almost break his ankle. The overly narrow landing area also caused several jumpers to not jump because of the close trees and runway and wind shear. Again, had the landing area been wider the WEATHER, that everyone else but myself states caused problems, wouldnt have. It wasnt the weather... again, it wasnt the weather.

Re: [scottayerSDC] 2010 Puerto Rico Boogie [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, I'm the OP and an extremely low time jumper, B license holder....

I was totally stoked for the boogie and I knew what I was getting into with the landing area before I even left NJ for Puerto Rico. I studied the aerial and was concerned but told myself I'd wait until I got there and checked it out in person by taking a good walk around the landing area, see what the winds were doing in relation to the trees and then trust my gut.

I got into PR on February 5th for a 16 day trip with a few moves around the island and Vieques planned. The boogie may have gotten me to PR but it wasn't the only reason for me being there. With that being said....

I heard the main landing area sucked conditions wise (the gravel, etc.) but when I finally dragged my lazy ass off of the beach and to the DZ, maybe on Thursday, I got to judge for myself. I decided not to jump.

My decision not to jump was my own, no one else could make me change my mind. I was uncomfortable and that's all that mattered. I was told by someone who knows me and my skill level/landings that I could probably land at the beach if I did a couple of jumps into the main landing area so they could let Jason know if they felt I could handle the beach landing area (this person is an instructor). I took that into consideration but still chose to stay on the ground.

Part of my decision was fear of getting hurt and the other part was total laziness. Would my decision be different if the landing area was back in Arecibo? Possibly, probably, but I can't say for certain because I am a total wind/weather queen when it comes to jumping and I didn't jump last year because I only had 28 jumps at the start of the boogie and I felt the winds were too gusty for me.

The last thing I wanted to do was get hurt and be broken not even half way through my trip. I had good friends who got hurt bad in the main landing area and with their level of experience, thousands of jumps, it just solidified my decision to stay put on the ground. When I hear the rumor going around of someone saying something like "I never knew there wouldn't be enough ambulances" it kinda puts things in perspective.

I almost forgot to say that I got a phone call from a friend in Virginia while the boogie was going on and they asked me if I was alright. I thought that was kinda strange until I was told the news of so many pounding in at the main landing area/beach landing area and getting hurt made it's way back up North really fast.

Now, with regards to the jumpers I know personally with high jump numbers, lots of experience in different conditions, etc., they had an absolute blast with the organzing, beach landings, etc. Lots of great reviews and smiling faces. That can't be overlooked!!

Will I be keeping my ears open to hear about any improvements to the landing area? You bet. Will I be back next year? Maybe... I may want to skip next year and do a SCUBA trip during the winter. We'll see.

I have so much appreciation and respect for all of the work that went into making this event happen. Can you imagine the backlash the DZ would've received if they weren't able to pull this together? It may have been an abandoned area before they got their hands on it and broke their backs getting it ready for everyone but I definitely think it has a lot of potential. I would hope that the lowtimers like me would do their research on a DZ before they leave for a boogie so they're not disappointed if the area isn't up to their comfort level. And if they decide to jump just because they paid a lot of money to travel to a boogie and they're determined to jump no matter what... then shame on them.

I love Puerto Rico, I love the people, I loved the amazingly fun times I spent with my amazingly awesome good friends. I loved catching up with/meeting other jumpers. I needed this getaway really bad as I had a really bad year in 2009, so this trip was more about recharging my batteries then anything else.

Hope this helps... SmileSmileSmile

Yet another example of a low timer that couldnt jump because of a narrow landing area bordered by tree and runway and made of gravel. She even started this post. No one forced her to make this decision and I agree with her decision to not jump. She didnt jump because of the poor landing area and nothing else. Read all of her posts about all the jumping she was going to do. She was even contemplating doing her 100th jump there. That would have been 20 jumps she thought she may have done. Yes the dropzone did make a dz out of an abandoned area and yes there would have been people disapointed if it was cancelled however it would have been a lot better if the dz had posted beforehand that it may not be suitable for low timers and a lot of them would have went anyway. Lucky mcswervy has a great attitude and holds no grudges...I dont either. I am just trying to state my opinion. She even stated they ran out of ambulances. I didnt even know that. I also think a USPA rated dropzone should be a certain standard. One high enough that I dont have to research as much as a non rated dz. Going by Lucky Mcswervy's posts I think a lot of her trip was supposed to be skydiving. Props to her for being so nice in a diplomatic PC kind of way. Too bad she had no where to do it. Again I do agree with her attitude though...no hard feelings and totaly positive. Lets hope dropzones around the world dont take advantage of her, and others like her, great disposition. Any dropzone would be honored to have a Lucky Mcswervy jumping with them. I am glad she had a great time in Puerto Rico and I hope 2010 is much better than her 2009.

Thanks so much. That was really nice!! But I just wanted to clarify that it was a *rumor* I heard about the "not enough ambulances" statement. It very well could've been someone being a smart ass. Smile

Guys, we're beating a dead horse here. I really don't want to lock this thread because I don't want it to reflect negatively on the organizers. I can guess they probably pour their heart and souls into this boogie every year and did their best to deal with an unfortunate complication with the airport arrangements. Hopefully the situation will be better for next year's boogie and I hope I get the chance to come!

So, let's end the landing area discussion now. Anyone have any good pics they want to post? Smile
