Okay all y'all out there at Skydive Pepperell... more video & pictures of 1PM in the stuff y'all post on YouTube... along with those mini-skirt & bikini top girls...

What else can we possibly post? (Well, there is a new windblade in the 121PM colors). (And a new set of door/exit lights which blink like Christmas tree ornaments.) I've made several jumps out of it/her this week.
And a new set of door/exit lights which blink like Christmas tree ornaments
Yeah, I've noticed that in some of the Skydive Pepperell videos on YouTube in which jumps were made from 1PM.
I suppose Junior and Emiko have embraced the late 20th century and installed a GPS in 1PM as opposed to letting jumpers spot the old fashioned way? I suppose the new lights are part of that??
The third, from Oct 2005, with a new paint job. At least there's still a jump door on her. Supposedly, she's still hauling jumpers in Texas.
That would be Skydive San Marcos. (Scroll to the bottom of the page.) 125PM is at Mile Hi in Colorado. Picture is from a long time ago, when it was at Pepperell for a Halloween boogie. The plywood door with the pumpkin fell out on the way to altitude one load and was never seen again.

I came across this listing of what used to be Pilgrim Air's Otters. As we know, 121PM, 122PM and 125PM all went on to and still are jump planes, not sure what became of the others. Too bad we can't get 121PM, 122PM and 125PM together for a formation load!

129PM is a jump plane... Z-hills I believe. It's the green Freefall Express otter.
Edit: Some google searching shows a couple of them crashed with Pilgrim (124 and 127), and 128pm is also a jump plane now registered as N24HV (at Cross Keys I guess).

Yes. That would be the references to Rhode Island (on the ice on the Scituate Reservoir, minor injuries, IIRC) and Long Island Sound (ran out fuel under IFR conditions and all died.)

Wow! That means if you could get them all together at the same place / same time, one could do a 100+ way formation load using just ex-Pilgrim Air turned jump plane Otters.
Come-on! That's gotta be worth an article in Parachutist!

Another reminder of the Pilgrim days -- the right-seat headsets in 121PM. HW
Hmmm... yeah... must have been left over from Pilgrim because if Van Sr had etched something into those heasets, it probably would have said something more like, "These here headsets belong to VAN! So y'all skydivers keep your grubby paws off!"
All the pictures of fire trucks etc. were taken the day an experienced jumper landed in a tree -- totally avoidable. Three or four TV stations had live reports from the scene, including helicopters flying overhead.
The picture of the Otter with the 121PM tail is from a Bud Lite commercial. It was probably taken when the tail was on 203E, but i will ask Jr.

Hee, hee. I was on that load; my two-way was second out and I was near the door. About a second after they left, there was a loud bang; no one knew what happened, but the plane was still flying. Turns out the "instructor" on the camera step managed to open the baggage door. It ripped off, flipped over the top, and hit the horizontal stabilizer on the right side. When I landed and walked in, Emiko was already looking at the gaping hole. My pictures attached. The door was found several days later, pounded back into shape, and reinstalled. The "instructor" is no longer jumping.

Not sure if it was 1PM or 203E that lost the port side (I think it was the port side) emergency exit (window) years back. That got found and put back on too.

As the result of a subsequent incident, his ratings were suspended, he chose not to accept an offer to reinstate them, and has disappeared. The door was bent, but pounded back into shape. There was also a substantial dent in the horizontal stabilizer. The RH rear exit door exited an Otter in Pepperell many years ago. I think it might have been 125PM, which is now at Mile-Hi. It was never found.

We had a similar thing happen a little over ten years ago here in Michigan with N100AP. On jump run a tandem student grabbed the window release handle and off it went. Not too long later a couple of drunk good ol' boys pulled up to the DZ with the window and asked if it was ours. They were with a bunch of friends having a BBQ and the window landed near them. It went right back in and off we went!

It is 203E (the Sullivan, MO) crash Otter, wearing a Pilgrim tail after the original one was chopped off by a copter blade during the filming of Point Break. Video by Tom Sanders, in Over The Edge and from a Bud Lite commercial. (Or so VPJR tells me.)
Anyway... I wonder if somewhere there is still raw footage of the mid-air 203E and the helicopter they were shooting from had during the filming of Point Break? Or if its long since ended up in a land-fill somewhere? If there was, I'd imagine it was scooped up by the NTSB during the investigation, but there's no mention of it in the incident report.

Sometimes you just get lucky! hmmm, I wonder how many times something like this has happened? In 1973 in Z-Hills I was on the first load after a fatality (the first one there in many years) in the Lockheed L-10E. Shortly after takeoff there was a very loud BANG and a lot of wind inside the plane. We were already nervous being the first load after seeing someone go in, but were only a couple hundred feet in the air. Not much to do except hope we don't hit anything on the ground or stall before reaching it. We continued to climb and it turned out the hatch directly above the pilots had blown off (never to be found AFAIK).
I don't know if one of the pilots was "playing" with the hatch or if it was opened previously on the ground for some reason and not secured properly or what, but it sure scared the crap out of us...

Sob. 121PM, having spent its infancy in the Northeast, its adolescence and more, in California, and a couple of years back in the Northeast, is now moving to the midwest. I was on its first load at Pepperell, but missed the last one yesterday. And today it's stuffed and ready to fly out. Over and out.
... and is the "barrier" to the aft to prevent camera persons from accidentally kicking open the baggage compartment door again while in flight???!
But seriously...
Glad y'all enjoyed 1PM's stay at Pepperell... even though some of all y'all called her "old" and "slow"... she got you there!!
Any word on what DZ / where Jr, Emiko and 1PM will be appearing next? At least like a good homing pigeon, she's winging her way back towards home. We know of a great location for a DZ in SoCal... near this City... in California...

So, you all are tired of seeing pictures in the Pilgrim colors, but this one flew into Ellington, CT Saturday. Its owner, Conrad Taylor, bought it from the estate of the founding president of Pilgrim, Joe Fugere. He took this pic of me standing in front of N7711.
Yeah, coldest I was ever on was an early bird at Cal City in Jan or Feb, don't recall the year, when it was below feezing on the ground and -20deg F at 12.5. That was not fun.

We did a New Years night dive in '87-88 from an Otter at Cal City right after it arrived. It was probably 121PM. It didn't have a door yet, (a South African named Graham? installed one later), and I got stuck spotting. I tried to wrap up in a blanket but by 10.5 I told them to make a pass or take it down. We made a long turn-around pass and got out about 11 anyway. Damn! I was cold! My logbook says it built to 9 with 4 out. I pulled a little low. Ground rush from the runway numbers told me so!
Yeah, I had a somewhat similar experience early in my jump career. It must have been winter 94 or 95 when the door got blown out of the Otter somehow on descent. Van went a couple of weekends before repairing it. Those were some cold rides to altitude without a door.
The South African is Graham Meise. He designed the Lexan door for Twin Otters (and other planes, including the newish Quest Kodiak. He now has a "warbirds adventures" place in Florida.
These pics are a bit past my time there. I don't recall jumping 121PM with either seats or belts. Neither was required till after the Perris crash and I left for Japan just before those requirements became mandatory. The picture I have posted on the California City stories shows Graham at the 5 O'clock in the red and black rig.

When I went out to Cal City in July of 1993 to do a tandem, there were seat belts in 121PM, but we were sitting on the floor facing aft with the person "in front of you" between your legs.
Sometime between then and when I went back later that summer to start in on static line jumps and then freefall (Bob's A3F program) the foam benches along the walls and seat belt arrangements that remained in 121PM for its life at Cal City was switched over to. All because of the Perris crash I came to learn.

1PM is wintering at Airglades. They are flying the occasional load in it when there are enough jumpers.
A little story about 2PM. When it left Zhills in the late 90's we threw a party, partly because it was a piece of history, and partly because by this time it was slow as hell.
Then later I ran across it in I think Raeford. We threw a party when it left there since it was now SLOWER.
The at an TX 4 way meet I pulled into San Marcus and saw 2PM. By this time it was so slow that we had to fly around and look for thermals.
The DZO swore that he was putting new engines on it... Last I had heard, it was back to being fast.
I saw 125PM at Perris recently when they were doing the 200-Ways / Cal State Record there a few months back, but I didn't have my camera with me that day.
Anyway, I don't believe 122PM and 125PM have sported the ol' Pilgrim Airlines paint scheme in years.
I think its just 121PM that still has that paint job... at least on a Twin Otter, that is.

This incident was before my time, but I certainly heard the story over and over and over... and over, again, from y'all while drinking beers.
Anyway, interesing photo. I hadn't known that 1PM was damaged that badly in this particular mishap of her's (there's been like 3 or 4).
The lore I always heard attached to this mishap was that she was flwon back to Cal City single engine to be repaired rather than being repaired out in the open at Perris (I don't think Perris had a hangar back then?), but looking at this photo, I doubt it. Must be more to the story?
If you can remember, Cary, after all the years & beers!
