Goodbye "Skydiving Magazine"? Can't Post

I received this today:

"Hi, April --

We have suspended the magazine -- indefinitely. January was our last issue.

Mike has been publishing the magazine for about 30 years and I have been here for more than 22 years, so we are both looking forward to exploring new options -- and maybe taking a little down time.

It's been nice working with you, April. Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,
Sue Clifton"

Just got off the phone with them.

They mailed refunds to all subscribers for any remaining issues and a note about the suspension.

I for one hope it is a short suspension and that Skydiving Magazine cames back as good as ever soon!

That's a shame - I subscribed for a year and enjoyed it so much that I re-upped for three years. Although the coverage could sometimes border on gossipy, it was nice to have an alternative viewpoint to Parachutist. It will be missed.

Re: [Madison] Goodbye "Skydiving Magazine"? [In reply to] Can't Post

Skydiving would do BASE articles when Parachutist wouldn't. Hell, they even MENTION BASE. Parachutist won't. You could say "fuck" in Skydiving. Try that in Parachutist. You could have tasteless ads in Skydiving. Don't even try in Parachutist. Parachutist panders to new members for the survival of the organization. Skydiving has (had) a loyal following who were willing to pay. Parachutist has captive members who have to take what they're given even when they don't want it (the magazine, that is.)
Truffer's editorials gave us a real skydiver perspective as alternative to a magazine that is handcuffed by having to cater to members vs. subscribers. And that is the difference; Member driven vs. subscriber driven. With Skydiving leaving we will experience not just a loss of an alternative periodical, but a truer representation, an independence and a voice. Sorry to see it go. Real sorry. I hope we still hear from Mike time to time. He's actually a very nice guy. (He might be reading this so... Hi, Mike )Wink
Ah, well, as this day has shown, all things are possible, and all things pass. We are all part of change. Change we want and cause, as well as change someone else resents. We are the new bright future of our own destiny as well as the harbinger of someone else's end. Life is like that; yin & yang, black & white, then and now.

Yeah, my 10 year just ran out, kept forgetting to grab my label to put my subscriber number in so I could re-up it. Guess my procrastination paid off, this time. Still, I'd rather have the darn mag. Now I gotta wait 30 days or so between my mistresses.. *sniff*

I just bought my girlfriend's brother a gift subscription for Xmas. Well, guess I can reinvest in a sub to Popular Mechanics for him :)

Darn. My ex-wife got me that 10 year subscription, and when we got divorced and the mag kept coming, I thought "Well, theres at least one thing that came from her that I can still appreciate!" Hahahahah..

Although I found Parachutist being about skydiving and Skydiving about parachuting a bit confusing, I always preferred the current news in Skydiving over the same regurgitated articles and generic boogie/competition coverage in Parachutist.

That stinks.

Hi All,

Yes...it is all true. The last issue of Skydiving Magazine was January. We mailed out pro-rated refund checks on Friday, January 16th. Renewals and new subscriptions that have come in since late December have not been processed.

(Please note that we have never offered a "Lifetime Subscription" to Skydiving Magazine. About 10 years ago we offered a 10-year subscription with a copy of Norman Kent's Photo Book...these 10-year subscriptions are starting to come to an end.)

We will still be in the office to take care of any issues. If anyone has any questions or problems, please feel free to contact me, sandy@skydivingmagazine.com.

I've known Mike Truffer since I moved to Fla. in '77. I've subscribed to Skydiving since the first issue. During a period of about 8 years, when I was not jumping, I still subscribed and read his magazine. I have always credited that for getting me back to jumping after that layoff.

Good luck, Mike & Sue and Skydiving staff. Thanks for the great work in publishing the best skydiving publication ever.

What a shame! It seems like I've been getting the magazine since my first jump and really looked forward to the articles and pictures. Just about the only place to get the latest information or quell the local rummer. Mike did a super job and the many of large pictures were clipped out for display. Hate to think it won't be coming next month.

He was the type of person who was easy to remember, cause he is REAL.

Years could go by , yet whenever i might write to the publication, or call with a question, that same real and genuine concern and interest in me, by Him, or by Sue Clifton, was always evident..

Just Love that magazine, and when they switched to glossy paper,,,, WOW the pics just jumped out at the reader...

"Skydiving" was also great for those of us outside the USA.

In addition to all the jumping, there were interesting equipment related articles, and current controversies that might never get into an official organization's magazine.

There was no need to wade through the material in Parachutist that's organization-specific. (E.g., Lists of licenses earned.)

On the USPA site I don't see any way to just subscribe to the magazine. My gut feeling is that it would have to come out cheaper per issue than Skydiving to be worth it...

The Austrailian Parachute Federation magazine is good. I used to get it complemenatry as PIA Rigging Committee Chair but don't now since I'm no longer chair. It is a very well done magazine but closer to Parachutist than Skydiving.

Associate membership, mag only is $95 AUS, about $65 US.

I too will miss Skydiving. It was always good to get news and event reports a month sooner and get a broader perspective. I didn't always agree with Mike, but usually and always appreciated the viewpoints.

30 years with a monthly deadline had got to be brutal.Crazy

I just checked and yes I was mistaken . . .

Our subscription was indeed for ten years. I guess when we got it in 1998 I didn't think I would last another ten years so I considered it for life. Wink

On a personal note, thanks to Mike and Sue for a great ride. And if those knuckleheads in Alexandria fail to drop this year's "USPA Achievement Award" on both of you I'm going to be very annoyed . . .

And not only has it been wonderful reading since the 1970s, you guys chronicled the history of the sport since that time. Anyone with a full collection of "SKYDIVING" already owns a history of the sport book.

In my own writing I can't guess how many times I referred to back issues and also the Index of Back Issues you have posted on the web. Each synopsis there listed anything that happened of import that month and it really helped me with getting the dates of past events correct.

You also published some of my stuff when "PARACHUTIST" wouldn't touch it, so thank you for that too.

So, does this mean Robin Heid will have to go on Welfare? Wink

I'm not digging for details but is there anyway to turn this around? Increase subscription rates and such? I really hate to see this happen. It was the one place to get uncensored news in the sport. I think I was up for renewal and would gladly pay more.

What can we do to change this?

This is really sad news.... the end of a great era.

I remember when Kevin Gibson passed the torch, and Mike Truffer carried it to what we've all grown to love.
People subscribed to Skydiving Magazine because they wanted to read it; not because it came along with membership dues.
Base jumping was freely talked about with great photos, when Parachutist wouldn't even mention anything that didn't adhere to the BSRs.
You got more details about incidents and accidents that provided real learning, not just speculation that "an AAD might have prevented this..."
I even got some of my own stories and photos published by Mike & Sue. I guess they're real collectors' items now. Tongue

Nope, raising subscription prices won't save the magazine. Subscriptions rarely cover the costs of publishing.
It's your advertisers who are the bread and butter, and I know how many of my own clients have cut their advertising costs over the past few years.

Thanks for the many years of great reading to Mike, Sue, Sandy and all the staff over the years.
Sandy, it's been a great pleasure working with you. I'm sure our paths will cross again soon.
To Robin, I hope you find another creative outlet for us to pick on. We've enjoyed your tenacity.
To Troy White, dear friend and ex-patriot, You can come back now. We have a new president!

Best Wishes and Blue Skies to you all,

dammit janet!

I had the pleasure of jumping on an 8 way team with Mike and Sue at the Nationals held at the Ranch about 12 or 13 years ago. I have never laughed so hard and jumped so well. We named ourselves the "French National Team", just so all the Frenchies would be scratching their heads in Paris as to why Airspeed and the GK's kicked their butts so hard!Laugh

I have spoken with Mike about many, many issues over the years, not always in agreement, and have enjoyed his and Sue's friendship. They even took a chance and came to my first boogie!

They deserve a nice retirement!

Thanks for the support Mike!

The question I have is this. Why jump straight to a shut-down? Why not offer the publication up for sale, with rights to the magazine name, the office equipment, etc. That way, Mike Truffer could make some money off his accumulated assets from the mag, and someone else could take over and make a living by continuing to publish it, and us readers could continue to enjoy alternative skydiving news coverage. That would be the win-win-win solution I'd like to see.

Like everyone else, I've enjoyed the mag immensely.
And I wish Mike and his staff the very best for their future.

Sad. While Parachutist was glossy and designed to impress non and new skydivers, Skydiving provided the only tool for active skydivers to keep informed about their sport in a timely and unvarnished manner.

Mike and Sue were the only ones willing to honestly report the Official hypocritical grandstanding that surrounded a certain video I starred in 20 years ago, and the only ones willing to report the follow-up. For that, I will remain forever grateful.

Mike's willingness to speak frankly and refusal to buy in to bureaucratic talking points or official policies encouraged open discussions of critical issues in our sport throughout the years. His voice and the reporting so broadly captured and quickly disseminated by Sue and their team has stood as an Icon for decades. They will be sadly missed.

By-the-way, this all reminds me of another niche publication that went a similar route...but they've kept publishing electronically even after they stopped selling subscriptions. It is run by people who just love to put out good info on their own favorite sport. RCSD. Additionally, they put all of their back issues on their site as PDFs.

It might be nice to have back issues available at some point for Skydiving. It is clear that they are getting out of the business, so...all that would be needed is copyright clearance from the publishers, a stack of back issues, a scanner, and an old fart with spare time and cable (if you've ever done mass scanning with a manual scanner, you know what I mean).

I am upset that this magazine has ended... I don't receive any magazines, newspapers, or anything in print - everything is online - EXCEPT skydiving magazine...

Parachutist is boring, uneducational, and out of date. It only covers a bit of skydiving and nothing else related to parachutes or flying.

Heck, the last time I tried to congratulate a friend for a new rating I saw in the back of it, he already had earned another one and it was passe - like sending a birthday card a few months late.

Oh, and the only way to be in the front cover of Parachutist was to be a world champion.... I framed the front cover of an issue of Skydiving where four of my friends, for whom I normally flew video, were turning points in a training camp in Eloy. 4 college age students with different colored jumpsuits and old POS rigs... And they made the front cover. Heck, I even made the second page once.

I wish Skydiving Magazine would have sold or given away the publishing rights to someone else.... (the customer database has value so the new owner could have at least started with a viable business).

I have to cry bullshit on this. First, there are certainly more pictures of better-known skydivers submitted (because proportionately vidiots jump with the best jumpers more than they do with Joe Jumper). Second, with Joe Jumper making 50 jumps a year, and the "world champion" making 500, wouldn't you think there might be better odds of a great shot being captured of the "champ"? But despite all that, there have been plenty of lower-time and lesser-known jumpers on the cover over the years.

Or, if I'm wrong, then I'm sure there are all sorts of everyday jumpers who have been on the cover who will be excited to know that they are now classified as world champions.

My favourite Mike Truffer response to people like this was in a letter to the editor that he printed with the title:

"Please take my name off your mailing list. I am no longer in the "sport". I told USPA to cancel my membership after 30 jumps because I found that skydivers are nothing but foul-mouthed, filthy, lewd, egomaniacs and I want no part of them or you."

With over 15,000 subscribers and a readership that is probably five times that figure, even more! Skydiving had to be the most read Skydiving magazine on the planet. I find it hard to believe that it has finished due to the current finical crisis, but to just shut with no notice seems very strange!

I'm sure the full story will come out in the fullness time, but hopefully someone will be able to pick up were Skydiving left off.

I just got my refund check, $3.57. I looked at it for a minute, trying to figure out the amount. I bought my girlfriend's brother, a newbie skydiver, a subscription for Christmas.. I figured since I bought the sub, I'd get the check for 11/12th of the subscription. So $3.57 had me scratching my head.

Then I realized: Its whatever remained from the 10 year subscription my ex-wife got me nearly 10 years ago. Screw her: I'm keeping the check! Cool She got damn near half of everything else, I'm keeping this!

And if you ever decide to open it back up, we'll re-subscribe, even at higher prices.

Blue skies and take care.

I have been subscribing to Skydiving Magazine since I joined the sport. This is a sad day. I have known Mike and Sue for over 20 years and have always enjoyed reading the mag and looking forward to the next publication.

A Sad day during turbulence times. Frown

Re: [Madison] Goodbye "Skydiving Magazine"? [In reply to] Can't Post

It's very sad to see it go, but if it has to go, I'm glad that it went suddenly, and on the top of it's game.

I've written many articles for them over the years, and they always treated my copy well, and were very supportive and generous in their coverage of my organizing career both in the US and around the world. It was the only consistently readable publication produced in the US about the sport, and I loved the way that it wasn't afraid to take on sacred cows. It seems that it's last act was to bring to light the disarray that the USPA board was in, and allowed the membership to make informed decisions in the last elections. We would never have seen such coverage in the USPA magazine, which is essentially worthless.

I think that they must be suffering from a number of things, not least of which is the general malaise affecting the conventional print industry. Major newspapers are going out of business, so I can only imagine how hard it must be to produce something of the quality of Skydiving for such a small niche market. Also, after 30 years on the job, it's probably time to pass the torch on.

Which leads me to this. The new media is online. If you want to step into the void left by Skydiving, step up. The opportunity is there if you have the same perseverance and determination that Mike and Sue had three decades ago. If you do though, you know the standard that has been set.

Me too. I'd gladly pay $25 a year or a bit more if that would bring it back. The USPA rag will never have the editorial guts that SKYDIVING did. SKYDIVING would publish articles that dissed their major advertisers. How is that for integrity? What a shame.

Thank you Mike and Sue and the rest of the "Skydiving Mag." staff for all you've done for this sport. Words can't express enough gratitude, really.

I will not bound to my mailbox through 6 feet of snow, for one of the finest publications to ever reach my home, anymore.

Best of Luck to you in your new ventures.

I just got mine too.

I quickly turned to the back hoping the editorial would explain why the paper is being shut down. I was disapointed that it did not.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised at this outcome. I had not heard of any attempt to sell the paper. To simply shut down leaves many questions unanswered.

Has anyone heard distinctly why this outcome? Surely there were alternatives?

I just spoke to "Skydiving" and logic prevails on reasoning of its departure. As Sue stated they have been doing the magazine for a long time. Regardless of subscriptions being down to distribute such an interesting publication on such a limited staff has been quite an accomplishment.
Words cannot be expressed on a simple post how we will miss this magazine. I wish everyone that has contributed to Skydiving the best for their futures.
I will be contributing my refund (over $50.00) to a local charity in the name of Skydiving Magazine.
Good luck and of course..... CYA!!!!!

Re: [Madison] Goodbye "Skydiving Magazine"? [In reply to] Can't Post

Few days ago I got as usual my January issue of Skydiving Magazine. A friend of mine who is a subscriber as well told me that he had seen sad news about the Magazine. Now I can see that it's really true that things are not with us forever, especially the good ones. I am a subscriber and a contributor to Skydiving Magazine for many years. What I liked the best with it is that there was no politic (or at least a very minimum) as you can find in official Association magazines like The Parachutist and (in Canada) Canpara which have to reflect the approach and policy of their Association (USPA and CSPA). We can say that Skydiving magazine was a very broadminded magazine which have dealt with all facets of our sport even the most controversial like some sort of BASE jumping or even more daring stuff. In Skydiving Magazine there was content for all skydivers: belly, head down, BASE, canopy pilots, accuracy and style, all countries, competitors, old timers, newbies, riggers, aviators, manufacturers... name it and well illustrated with high quality pictures. Mike Truffer's editorial was always (and I told him once), right on the target. I had the chance last year to meet Sue and Mike and I have thanked them personally for their good work. Then that's it. It's over. I will really miss that Magazine because it was unique and complete.

To Skydiving Magazine:
Congratulations on a wonderful publication for so many years.
I like all aspects of being in the air - CRW/CF, BASE, wingsuits, legal, politics, competitions, etc.

Skydiving mag gave me the news, views, and information, that kept me informed, interested, educated, inspired, and enlightened about anything to do with nylon and string.

I have loved your work.
I enjoyed contributing once in a blue moon.
I am sad to see it go.

Enjoy the next phase of your lives. May it be filled with happiness, success, and new opportunities.

He answered all of the questions that I had and I totally understand why they are "suspending publication". I did take the opportunity to personally thank him for his contribution to the sport for over 30 years and expressed to him how much we are going to miss the magazine.

Hi Peter,

Here is an excerpt from an email that I got from Mike:

"We've suspended the magazine because two key staffers have elected to move on to bigger and better things. Rather than recruit, hire and train replacements, I elected to take this option. The magazine has been financially sound since the early 1980s; in fact, 2008 was an exceptionally good year for it.

I'm not certain what the future holds for the magazine. Rather than leave our faithful subscribers hanging, we refunded the balances of their subscription payments. If the magazine should resume publication, we'd contact all former subscribers and invite them to re-subscribe.

Again, we've certainly enjoy publishing Skydiving, and it's gratifying to now receive the good wishes from so many subscribers and advertisers.

I'm sure you and I will cross paths again, Jerry; I'm not going anywhere!"

Does this get you what you are interested in?
