Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend Can't Post

Folks - this breaks my heart... Frown

Eric (Tonto) Stephenson died earlier to day from multiple trauma injuries after a swooping incident at JSC. Tonto was moderator on Dropzone.com and a good friend. I don't have words at this time. He'll be missed on so many levels.

Thank you! Thanks Tonto. Good bye my friend.

To his family, friends and especially Taya, my thoughts and prayers.

Tonto was one of my AFF instructors - I was a very nervous student and he had a massive calming influence on me. I wanted to do more jumps with him as a student but he refused saying that I did not need him there and I would be wasting my money.

A great guy who I kept in contact with from the UK, especially if I needed advice from a trusted mentor, and someone I loved catching up with when visiting South Africa

Wow. First Beezy, now Tonto. This has not been a good weekend.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Eric face to face, I spoke with him often about canopy flight. Always eager to learn, and seemingly on the right path, I'm at a loss over this. I'm going to miss our chats.

Tonto has touched numerous people via the forums both in his chats and his advice he offered so freely. He has helped many people out with canopy questions and proved he was humble enough to seek out advice to further himself too.

I always laugh when you would post you just were not sure you were committed enough to the sport get a skydiving tattoo yet you've been jumping for years and had over 4000 jumps.

You also recently showed me another side when you told us about the child you and Taya have been helping in South Africa. You have touched that childs life more then you have touched anyone out side of your familys probally.

Thank you for all the help you have provided to the skydiving community and Taya and your family are in my thoughts.

This is a tough one. tonto was one of my mentors and if I ever had a safety query he was the first person with whom I would consult. He was Mr Safety personified. Outside of skydiving he had a briliant sense of humour and often kept us in stitches with his stories.

I think it would be nice for people other than the Mods to know that story. I've copied it from the Team Room.

From Tonto's post:

Quote:
Taya and I support a little deaf girl from Kliptown, Soweto.
She was 3 when Taya noticed she was not like the other kids. The teachers at the creche thought she was retarded. She organised a friend at WITS university to test her, and she's profoundly deaf.

Taya organised that she and her mother both recieve schooling at St Vincent's school for the deaf in Melrose, North of Johannesburg. They have both learned to sign, and Silindile can now express herself. She's a bright little thing, and she's now 6 years old.

I stop in through Kliptown on the way back from the DZ in Carletonville about once a month, drop off some potatos, some spinach, some new clothes before winter. I pay her taxi fees to school and back, and her school fees. She gets 2 meals a day at school.

Taya sold her car for $1000 when she left for Princeton last year and opened a trust with that modest amount, and since then I've added another $1000 to the cause, and it keeps her in school.

Tonto has 2 girls of his own, yet he still found the means to help another little girl. That's cool. Smile

You were my AFF Instructor and my mentor, but most of all you were my friend. I have no words right now and in a way i'm hoping that the next time my phone rings it will be someone telling me it's not true and this has all been some kind of elaborate joke.

Thank you for everything t, for teaching me to skydive, for having the guts it took to tell me to slow down when i needed it, but most of all for the love you showed, for our late night chats outside the bar, for the welcome smile, the praise after you watched me swoop, for encouraging me through nationals, and for the hug we shared yesterday morning when i walked on to the DZ. Had i known it would be our last i might have held on just that little bit longer.

You will be missed my friend, you leave behind a void in my life and i can only hope that i will live out the rest of my days in a way that will make you proud. Thank you for letting me inside your circle and letting me know that i had a a place in your heart, you will always have a place in mine.

Absolutely gutted to hear of Tonto's passing. We met many years ago at Skydive Citrusdal and did a few jumps together over the years since then. What amazed me with Tonto was how enthusiastic he remained after so many years in the sport, always keen to try a new discipline and immerse himself in it completely.
He was a true mentor, always willing to guide and teach, and always ready to learn from others when exploring a new discipline.
I feel honoured to have known him, jumped with him, learned from him and competed against him.
We are all gonna miss you Tonto!

ditto frenchy. exactly how i feel. If i ever saw a PM from Tonto it was always friendly PM while at the same time an educational one. i had a question years ago and he was so enthusiastic about it that he also invited me to question his partner, and then check in to see how my query was coming along. Tonto was one of the great moderators that nobody had to be shy around, he taught many things through these forums and every post i ever saw of his was of value even if it was just joining in the banter.

i will always remember his friendly non judgejmental presence on these boards and if i feel the way i do just from a few pms over the internet with him then i can only imagine how people who know him must be feeling.
I get the feeling the sport has just lost one of the most important guys the sport has had as there are thousands of people from this site alone that have benefited from tontos post.

Both me and my sister were students of Tonto, he helped us to not just become better people but to enjoy it.

Whenever he took somebody out as he was approaching the door on an Aff L1 he would always ask if you are ready, on my sisters jump she asked him whteher he is ready. From then on he always told her that he was ready and he never forgot to play rock/paper/scissors with her ( to see who jumps first).

One of the most important things he taught me was to know when to say No that is something I will hold with me my whole life

He was a great friend and a great mentor, i feel honored to have known him.

HI ALL i was on the load with T and had a chat with him on the way to altitude - he was in great spirits ! God i cant believe i have to post on his report - what Peej said was pretty much it. He was fighting his way out after initiation of a 270 i think he lost a toggle but either way he was fighting all the way into impact after initiation - brother you are my mentor and i will always love the thought of you. i will miss you for the rest of time - everytime i put my wingsuit over my shoulders i will think of you. you will be flying off our wingtips into the light.

my wish is that every single canopy pilot reads the posts that follow and LEARN - thats the way he would have wanted it.

God bless his soul.

we got taya a flight to sa and she arrives in the am. i will help setup a trust for the girls - .

Thanks for all the help and advice, you so gladly provided to your brothers and sisters, here, on DZ.com. I know you spent countless hours, typing replies to the PM's that were sent to you.

I never had the chance to meet you, in person, to thank you, for all the help and advice you've been giving me, over the years.

Fly free my brother. Smile

I wish you the bluest skies of all.

Re: [sangiro] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

This is incredibly sad and hard to believe. t and I never got to meet in person, although I went from owing him a beer when we finally met to a keg. He's the reason I'm jumping right now. After my good friend Mike went in last year I was having a really hard time getting back in the air. He gave me the understanding and support that I so desperately needed. We were strangers then. This man was a saint.

Looking back at the pages and pages of PMs we exchanged, several things stand out. Things he said that gave me some of the strength I needed to stand back up after losing Mike. I'm sure he would be telling you all the same right now if he could.

"In the end, it's one foot in front of the other, and one day at a time that gets us through anything really hard."

"I hope you come to terms with this. I'm not a Christian, so by my beliefs, Mike is spending 40 days in the garden coming to terms with his change of status, and will start again. Buddhists believe their is purpose in each lifetime. When I hear of what Mike was like - he more than achieved his purpose."

Well, t... I hope the garden is nice. Maybe we will catch up in another life time. Blue skies buddy. Thanks for everything.

Thanks for sharing that Skymama, it's speaks volumes about the man, but it's not hard to believe.

I too have never met him in person but have read his many contributions on DZ.Com and we have conversed via PM's. I'd have to say he is one of the very few folks on these posts that I agree'd with 99% of the time. I hate to see the nice ones go this way.

Nothing like a nice hammer blow to the heart on a Sunday afternoon. What a sad shame.

When I came back to the sport four years ago, I learned how to pro pack at Perris from Raoul Gravell, who was one of Tonto's students back home in SA.

This is the part of the sport I hate, the part I didn't miss for a moment all the years I was away, and the part that is the hardest to come back to. The part we have to make up our minds to live with if we want to keep on doing this. Farewell Tonto, and thanks for the comments and PMs you sent my way too.

Tonto was such a good friend to so many people. I had the pleasure of doing hundreds of AFF jumps with him. He was a great instructor and gave all our students so much confidence. Such a professional guy but always had time to smile at his co-instructor during a dive.

He loved skydiving!

Geez I can't beleive this. Tonto was my instructor on my first 2 SL jumps in 1990 in Stellenbosch - in those days he impressed me with his attitude and his appearance (long hair and always jumped barefoot !) and he influenced me to return to skydiving in 1996 to do AFF and continue my skydiving career. We have subsequently had regular contact via PMs when we would discuss everything other than skydiving !

His posts as a moderator on DZ.com are going to be sorely missed. Thought provoking posts and always safety conscious. Safety first !!

Just goes to show we are not all invincible and if this can happen to him it can happen to anyone ! Be careful out there.

He is going to be missed terribly.

My sincere condolences to his daughters, Taya, parents and other loved ones.

Sangiro -

My thoughts and love are with you. Thank you for honoring him by changing the colours on the site.

I'd like to post some words from the man himself. It's his last PM to me, and it changed my life.

From Tonto:

Quote:

The society we live in seems to expect us to be part of some fringe culture and to risk all on a ski slope, a mountain face, the sky or the sea. That conflicts with the vast majority of inspirational human beings I have met or that I know of. My knowledge of self is somewhat disheartening. It seems I'm fairly good at getting into deep, deep trouble, and there I find my quietest self, and perform well. I wish I could have traded that skill for a good income, but we play the hand we are dealt. I've tried to use those experiences to better help those who have spent time dancing around the hole, but who have not yet fallen in and who may not know the way out.

I certainly hope that the high points of my last 22 years are not contained in my 60 something hours of freefall. I'd be far more satisfied to find them in the laughter of my friends, the eyes of my lover, the thoughts of my children.

From your attitude, I'm sure that you have taken the "energy" (I don't like the word fear - it has too many negative connotations for a vital emotion) you felt within this sport and have channeled it into being the very best rigger you can be. You seem to have taken your knowledge of self, and used it to be a vital and positive force in our community. As someone who has had 20 cutaways, I'm totally reliant on my rigger. Thanks for the time and effort you put into each packjob. You cannot put a price on a save.

Blue Skies Always,

t

Respectfully,

Dawn Larsen

Anyone familiar with these forums knows that there are some people whose opinion is always worth noting. Tonto's posts were invariably rational, thoughtful, thought-provoking, direct and unflinchingly honest. In heated debates, you could always count on him to offer a voice of reason. He was a teacher and mentor to many of us. The loss of his voice leaves a terrible void; he will be profoundly missed.

On the way to the DZ i called a good friend and heard the news, needless to say I was less than happy. Even though I had never met Tonto I read his posts as he was a voice of reason. WHen I got to the DZ I let a few fellow DZ.comers know that we lost Tonto. The initial look was one of disbelief. A friend had her laptop and we jumped on-line to confirm what had happened, needless to say I was rather bummed!!

Tonto, if you can read this from above understand I read your posts and your words will remain with me. I am saddened we lost you, but I celebrate your life and all you gave to this small community. I sit in from of my PC and raise my glass, fly free my friend!!!

I never knew you Tonto, and I'm very sorry for that. Thank you for all that you gave to people here who never had a chance to meet you. I knew that he had an influence on me here on the forums, and I was sure to let him know. I wrote to him:

I wanted to say thank you for all of your posts on dropzone. You're a great voice for reason, logic, and experience.

He replied:

You're welcome!

Re: Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

I have spent all day dealing with this and I have thought of many things that I could say to express my feelings and what kind of person Eric was. I have come to the conclusion that anything that I (or anyone else) could say would be just a reflection of personal felt loss.Never the less, I am devastated by his death but I am positive what Erics stance would be on this subject as we have discussed it at length.Eric and I saw eye to eye on many things to include the topic of death. Eric was realistic about things in his posts,in person and never sugar coated things. I cannot help but think that because of this, there are people here today that wouldn't be because he called them on their bullshit either in person or online. When people screwed up, he wasn't afraid to say it and right now I am positive that he would admit that he screwed up, plain and simple, and he would take full responsibility, thats the kind of guy Eric was. Eric was a stand up guy.

I am deeply saddened that I will no longer be able to converse with Eric and share our thoughts on this life. I feel badly for those he left behind. For those who didn't know him personally, you cannot be expected to understand how many peoples lives Eric had an influence on in the many different ways we all have an effect on those around us while we are here. For those who knew Eric, you know what I am talking about. Eric, my friend, I will miss you.

Tonto, I never met you, I only chatted with you on the forums on occasion...I don't think we ever even shared a PM back-and-forth. But I valued you quite a bit, nonetheless - I've admired and appreciated your insight, your never backing away from difficult questions, and your humility and reflection, even after years in the sport.

Your posts challenged me to think harder about a lot of things in this sport, either changing my opinion or confirming it only after it had been through the difficult questions you raised. Thanks for being a great teacher, whom I never even met.

To Tonto's family and friends, my most heartfelt condolences. If I'm going to miss him just for his perspective and his posts, I can only imagine what a force he was in person. Frown I wish you all peace and comfort.

Very Sad. In April 1990 Tonto was my jumpmaster on my very first jump at Cape Parachute Club, then still operating at Stellenbosch. Our C-206 was in for a major and we used a Cherokee 6. The planes throttle somehow got stuck and we all had to exit at a much higher speed than normal.

The pilot had to make an emergency landing after we left and Tonto called all the first jumpers on the load, "his first jump heroes" That made up my mind to continue skydiving, and Tonto became my hero.
Unfortunately he left for Johannesburg and I never got to know him. I still have that 1st jump logbook with his "Tonto" signature!

The enitire skydiving community is a much poorer place, because you left us! Blue skies!

Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

I was out for the weekend, and hear a few sms-es come in and a phonecall immediately after...I ran to my phone thinking some friends probably had great stories to tell about the past weekend of jumping...but the news I heard shocked, baffled and amazed me...disbelief is the only word I could think of..

Tonto was always full of good advice for everyone..
Talking to him was always fun. Be it only online and through email.
Im glad Ive had the priviledge of meeting him face to face in germany...

When his love was coming to Belgium for a few months, I almost got daily messages. Asking to take care of her, and make sure she had lots of friends to play with in the sky during her stay...
All the words he spoke where filled with love for her..

I cant even begin to imagine the loss she, and all people close to him have experienced...my heart is with you all...

Tonto was a real mentor to me. He taught me safety, how to think logically, how to take care of myself and my gear, and discipline in the sport. He taught me that habits can be a bad thing, when I once walked around the front of the aircraft, and told him not to worry, that I know it is the wrong thing to do. He laughed with me when I had my first parachute malfunction. When I said I wanted to be as good as him, he said: don’t be, aim higher, aim to be better than me, be the best you can be.

Tonto lived life to the fullest, and is a great inspiration to me, and he is going to be missed by all. My deepest condolensces to Taya, his children, his parents, and everyone out there – the skydiving community. He was a great friend and mentor to all.

I am deeply saddened by this, and truely greatful to have known sucha great person.

Re: [cloudhugger] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

I worked with Eric 20 odd years ago, for about 4 years, in Constantia, Cape Town. It was a pretty mundane job where we could chat most of the day. And chat we did - from cycling, archery, running, motorbikes, guns, physics, philosophy to, ummm ... skydiving. He was on crutches initially, having smashed his femur in a skydiving incident in UK. I won't say he convinced me to try skdiving, he wasn't that kinda guy, but I gave it a bash and after 15 jumps my curiosity was satisfied. A very kewl jumpmaster too!

We lost contact after he moved to Joburg, but chatted to him on the phone a few years ago and we exchanged quite a few emails thereafter with the intention of hooking up for a beer sometime.

Last night I saw an online newspaper headline mentioning the death of a Joburg skydiver. Fearing the worst, I moved away from the computer and made a cup of coffee instead - but upon returning was really gobsmacked to see the name "Eric Stephenson".

As has been said, Eric was a wonderful guy - an intelligent, well-read free-thinker, always passionate and focussed in whatever he did, stood his ground well in debate, but yet had a calm, compassionate and caring nature too. I thoroughly enjoyed his company, and learned a lot from him.

What a sad loss. My condolences to his partner, daughters and parents.

Re: [sangiro] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Tonto,
I have no words to describe what has happened. I have to thank you for the amazing privilege that I have been given to be your last student.

Normally, it would have been me writing you an email today saying how much I am still smiling after the weekend jump. Today, when I close my eyes, I see your smiling face as I was pulling, as instructed. You always smiled, but this was the Cheshire Cat smile, the big one and I am sure you still had it when you were reaching the ground.

I have only jumped 5 times with you… well, if we do not count the tandem jump that I did with Kevin and you were at the same load… and not really too happy for your just-to-become-student to do too many of tandem jumps before the proper training, as relying on someone else and skid landing was not what you wanted me to learn; I certainly hope, that one day my skills will improve enough, that my back side will not be in direct contact with the ground after landing ;-) – your comment here sure would be “LOL”. You have thought me in the past months patience and how to enjoy the day at dz just waiting, look and watch, learn from others, read the clouds and watch the blue sky.

I thank you for sharing with me thoughts, feelings and jokes. Thank you for sharing with me the enjoyment of Saturday sunset jumps. Thank you for all you have thought me ;-) to believe that I can “jump out of completely normal plane”, which (the normality of the plane) of course could be very debatable… and land with a big smile on my face and feel so incredibly free and happy ;-) Our chat about life as we waited for the plane to refill – I told you that you are an amazing instructor and you are so inspiring and it is such a pleasure to know you, a man that found his passion and happiness. Not many of us are as lucky to realize what makes us happy, fulfills our lives.

And the chat in the plane… when you said – “the sky is blue, it’s a perfect day! Think, you could be trying to find a parking place outside a full shopping mall right now, instead you are doing what you love…” and we crawled to the door, ready, set and we jumped… level five, arch, report the altitude, one practice touch and you were smiling in front of me. 360 degrees left, whaw! that went ok; right, ok, almost 360 and instead stopping I am upside down, my butt down, can see you there, following me… you said “arch and you will be ok and open the shoot… “ I arched, looked at the alti – exactly 5000! You said to open at 5000, this was one of the best arches I made, you were maybe three four meters in front, smiling… that was a big smile! I pulled the cord… Landed really nicely, thinking you would have been really proud of my landing this time (ok, the minor gravity again, but we will talk about it later…) … I can see someone had an accident… one of the boys playing with my son says “its Tonto!”. It cannot be , its supposed to be a perfect day, I am suppose to learn new lessons, smile till Monday and we were supposed to still talk about so many things, your daughters, your girlfriend, my boyfriend, the life in general and the power of universe… I was supposed to snick a photo of you or two, while you were doing your amazing landing!

Thank you for being my teacher! Thank you for sharing your passions with others, you showed me and others so much, much more than just jumping out of the plane…

Agnieszka Solomon
PS ...and thank you for calling me "a crazy polish woman" ;-)

When I saw t landing I rushed to him, but I was calm - it was Tonto - he'll be fine. Tonto is always fine. Some soft arse-landings when working on perfecting a new approach, but he always gets up and walks off the dz - with a smile. The minutes after that will probably be with me forever - feeling helpless as I watched the jsc staff and paramedics giving it their everything. Tonto was one of the people you'd immediately look for in situations exactly like this for guidance and to calmly and swiftly deal with the incident at hand. I couldn't believe it then and I have trouble accepting the truth now.

I remember disagreeing with t on occasion. 100% of those times he was pointing out how I could improve the safety of my skydive and I was too proud to admit that he was right - again. He was without a doubt the safest skydiver I have ever known.

As Agnieszka wrote, it was a perfect day and t was in his happy place. I shared a load with him earlier and spirits were high - it was a beautiful morning.

To Taya, Caleigh, Shanna, t's family and the jsc family: my thoughts are with you all.

We'll never forget you, t.

One of the threads that I'll always remember Tonto for was "Should 8 year olds be doing tandem?" (or something to that effect). He had just done lurked his daughters tandem and posted a link to some pictures. The link for those pictures are below. I'm not sure who's got the bigger smile, him or his daughter. But its obvious in both of their eyes... I've also attached my favorite of them.

Re: [sangiro] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

I never met Tonto in person, but I can tell from my interaction with him on the forums and via PM's that he was one heck of a stand-up guy. We got to know eachother over a disagreement, but after the dust cleared from that we "Shook hands" so to speak and he offered to give me advice any time, about anything. You could really tell he wanted me to pursue my goals....And achieve them. And he was willing to help a new jumper all the way from South Africa, without ever having met me. Eric and I were discussing an incident that I saw and he heard about - And he sent me this, and I thought it was appropriate to post here:

"When something like that happens - close - and we see it, and participate in the aftermath, it can traumatise us at worst, and raise questions about our own mortality at best....Whatever we do, we must not stop caring about those who are hurt or are killed. "

He was the guy that helped me get over that shock of seeing my first major incident...And get out jumping safely again...And that is some of the best advice he ever gave me above, for what it's worth.

I don't think there is another person in the world that knows more secrets about me than you.
We have shared so much, you have tought me so much. I don't know where to go to even try fill that gap.

I loved your smile, your hugs hello, your messages of encouragement with everything, skydiving, relationships, love and life.

I loved the way you loved. Loved T, Cal and Shanna, skydiving, shooting, climbing, wingsuiting, flying your canopy.

The telapathy we developed in the sky, knowing what to look for and cover with eachother with students and knowing eachother under canopy. I never felt anything but absolute trust and safety with you there on the other side grinning.

Thank you for being there when I needed you, bringing me food when I could not stand, standing by me when all I wanted to do was run away.

Hey Bev.

I can still remember my first time out the plane with you on one side and Tonto on the other like it was yesterday and that wide cheesy grin you described, it was one of the most memorable moments of my life. You both opened the door to a new world for me.

Tonto, shot! it was an honor to be taught by and jump with you and I am so going to miss your calming reassuring influence whether it be walking to the plane or leaping out that door. May your influence on our lives live on.

It just won't sink in that he's gone.

It's the little things that tell you the most about a person. When he, Marais and Bernard came to KZN to do our wingsuit course last year, it was freezing, and there was a tiny foreign girl doing a tandem. Without even thinking he took off his gloves and gave them to her.

That same weekend I did one of my all time favourite skydives with him. It was my 4th wingsuit jump, and there were a couple of us on the load. I was flying base, and he flew up next to me, and with that big Tonto grin on his face kept on edging up the pace without me realising it. We flew sub 60 on that jump, and it made my weekend. And I think he was more excited than I was.

That was the thing with t....he was always so incredibly bubbly when someone got something that he was sharing with them.

Tonto will forever remain in all our hearts and minds. He was an inspiration to us, and often in his quiet way, he made us question ourselves and alter our decisions for a better outcome.
Tonto was one of the major reasons for me returning to skydiving after Clydes accident. He gave us his full support and was a friend, mentor, sounding post when needed.
I always knew when I was at the DZ, that if I needed some advice, I would get an objective opinion from Tonto. If the weather was dodgy, I would look to see where Tonto was ? If he was huddled in a corner with Taya Smile then the decision was made for me.

Much love to Taya, the girls and his family, he will be sorely missed.

You taught me, challenged me, inspired me, reprimanded me, thanked me, thought of me, smiled with me, skydived with me. And even though we only spend weekends out at the DZ skydiving and sharing the sport we both love so much, I consider you a close friend and mentor, not only in the sport but so to in life and spirit.

There have been many memories flowing through my head the last few days, and they have brought a smile to my face each time, not quite like the big energetic smile you always had, but close enough. I now would like to share a few of these with you, so you to can smile again.

Meeting you on a cold and cloudy day at JSC, when I returned to the sport after an injury to do my AFF, you took the time to get to know me and what makes me think, learn and laugh, this comfort with you followed me out the door the next weekend with you and Manny on level 1, and you were the one constant Inst on all my dives.

The pep talk about where and what I could do in the sport once I had gotten of student status.

The words of encouragement and pride you had for me and my 4-way team during our years of training.

Being a support and guide for the canopy courses I ran at JSC and the valued feedback and info you had for me, on teaching and seeking knowledge.

Believing in me and my dream when I choose to head across the pond and throw drogues for a season, giving me the heads up on the world I was about to become part of.

Standing at boarding point when I returned to JSC, me with my first tandem back in SA and you with a Level 1 AFF, you walked over to me and placed you hand on my shoulder, smiled and told me you were proud of my path within the sport. We laughed that there we both stood, me an ex student of your, about to take a person on their first skydive, and you there with the same.

The always familiar and friendly smile before I left the door.

Being humble enough to forgive and support a friends return to the sport in SA, (we both know who I'm speaking of)

The unconditional support and friendship you showed someone I loved when our time had come to an end, and the chat about life lessons and love lessons you had learned.

I'm sure half these will be exaggerated into epic moments as time passes and other will be lost to the public but never forgotten in my heart.

Funny thing is I'm not sad or angry at your passing, all I feel is humbled by your friendship, words and way of life. And I thank you for that.

May light, love and happiness follow you into your new adventures.

Blue Skies Forever
Karl

I have many fond memories of Tonto, and all are quirky. New Year’s eve in ’95 or '96 at the DZ in Carletonville, we were all sitting around the fire, the buffalo milk long gone, with about half an hour to go before the year turned. Tonto came to me and asked me to park my car at the end of the runway, lights on, to help the plane to land at midnight. The plane took off into the night, and about five minutes into the New Year, he touched down just outside the beerline, having done an unscheduled night jump. After stowing his gear, he did the rounds and wished everybody a Happy New Year, that Cheshire cat grin on his face when he asked - ‘So how many jumps have you done this year?’ His love of life was infectious. I will miss him.

Re: [kaerodyne] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

I wrote earlier that I worked with Eric 20 odd years ago, but since this earlier post have been reminiscing on the past with many fond memories.

As an instructor and friend Eric cleared me for free-fall after my 6th SL jump at Citrusdal back in '87, and I remember him saying his only concern was that I seemed so layed back he was worried I might just forget to deploy. Hehehe - I was layed back because he was such a good instructor! I trusted him.

Then in '89 there was a boogie in Mmabatho. I was no longer current, so I did a tandem from a Herc at 18,000 ft asl and he did the photo dive. Those pics will now mean a little bit more to me ...

But in the shower this morning I just had to pack up laughing ...

At work Eric had been asked to assume the responsibilities of somebody on leave, in a desolate location, and understandably found this to be extremely boring. So he decided to while away the time by doing something seemingly constructive. I was asked to accompany the boss to this desolate location, and upon arrival Eric was taken by surprise. The boss found reams and reams of paper that Eric had been writing. But it wasn't a story, it was simply the same line written over and over again ...

"All work and no play makes jack a dull boy"

Dunno, never quite got out of Eric what he intended doing with this, or can't remember, but methinks he was probably making wallpaper for his bedroom. Kewl concept. But hey, we were young at the time. And it was hilarious at the time. Still is for me today!

Since then I've moved on to greener pastures. Have worked in corporate environments and today run my own business. During this time have undergone full psychometric testing and have been pleasantly surprised by my results. But I've always considered Eric to be ... wooaaah ... way above me.

There are many kind, compassionate and caring people in this world. But I'll hazard a guess that the underlying reason that drew so many people toward Tonto was his intelligence.

And that, for me, is why his death is such a bitter pill to swallow.

Luv ya Tonto

From the day I met you the first time as one of my instructors at Stellenbosch, I always had admiration for your commitment to the sport. You were a true instructor that always had the attitude that we all ,once in our lives, had only one jump or five jumps and that we all need encouragement end guidance through those first years. You always took the extra step. You always made us respect a student or newcomer to the sport and I truly tried to live up to that. If there was a hint of Skygod attitude in us ,you quickly made us rethink our attitude. You did though, manage to give me hell in your own kind of way .From setting off the smoke to early on all those demo jumps around Cape Town to packing the rigs in sun or water or driving to fast with you guys in the back of the pickup.

You are one of the main reasons I busted my ass every week to get to the DZ and probably also the reason why I decided to make a living from this sport. (Don’t know if I should thank you for that)

Years later we were flat mates in Jo’burg and although we lived together, very little was talked about skydiving. Mostly politics, guns, martial arts and our futures. I think we both went through uncertain times in our lives then. You just had a better outlook on it than me .You taught me a lot in those years. You knew were my heart was and never pushed. I still remember the day you told me you guys have to move out to find another place, because there was a little one on the way and also your concern of making a good dad. All I could think of was that no more helping to push start that damm Mazda 323 in the mornings. We all new you would be great at being a dad.

Like I said, you always made an effort. You showed my overseas friends the country (South Africa, driving thousands of kilometers) when I was to busy at work and they all returned for more.

As a DZ owner and Instructor in the States in later years ,probably the biggest testament to you as an instructor is seeing all those new jumpers and instructors that came through the ranks under you guidance and their high standards for safety and professionalism. Many of them worked with for me or with me and it were obvious they had you as a mentor.

When I came back to Carltonville for visits and bringing my friends for tandems, I made sure most of them had the privilege of jumping with you. Besides the fact that I could not do a standup tandem landing at that altitude to save my life, and boy, did you let me have it, there was a good chance you will make future skydivers out of them.

We did both have one thing in common those years. Our loyalty to our ragged out Jonathan Canopies.

Over the last years we only saw each other when I came by the DZ on visits to SA.I always knew you would be there and today I am truly sorry we lost touch. I sort off always thought you would be there. That’s why this is one is a tough one to swallow and accept. I can only hear you now . “Learn something from this …..”

A

Tonto & I used to argue about non-skydive issues BUT when it came to safety issues he was my identical twin - he never questioned the calls I made even when he had to keep his students on the ground - I respected this about him! He sometimes said that he was thinking, whilst stuck in traffic, about this or that & I once asked him if that's the only time that he thought - you can imagine the tongue lashing I received, with his straight face he still made me pack-up laughing! We had many laughs together & i know these memories will live forever!
Condolences to all his loved ones!

Who will be the great-celebrated singers, dancers, poets, laughers and lovers?

Who will risk being Zorba, leaping onto the tabletop, wildly spinning and offering heart and soul to living a life of fullness and love?

Who among us will refuse to buy into the conspiracy of this world that asks us to play small?

Dare you take a stand for love in this life and allow your own particular creative expression to flow through you, to fly?

Despite the seeming fear of danger of doing so, the instant that you make such a leap of faith, you join the rank of greatness!

Every moment you continue to hold back and hide your divinity, your own power and love, you hide in the halls of mediocrity.

The difference is courage to dare being fully alive in such a world where everyone is living a careful life and trying not to disturb the status quo, passively hoping for the best, desperately trying to outwit disease and death.

Who dares to be fully alive in the midst of all that?

Who among us will be great?

Well, if not you, then who?

Re: [sangiro] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

Tonto was a good friend and teacher. I’ve knew him since I started jumping in February 2005, switching to AFF after 6 SL jumps. His enthusiasm for the sport was apparent and contagious.

I remember the 2nd week I was out at the DZ. We were having a beer in the bush pub. I wasn’t one of his students yet. (He had no issues coming to share some thoughts with a student). We discussed EP’s and his words to me was ‘…you’ve got an advantage you did your FJC last week. You still remember the stuff'

Later he taught me some other stuff like:

“..The ground will not ask you how many jumps you have before it’s comes out to kill you.”

“...Maintain you equipment. We die easy”

“…all mushrooms are edible …. At least once”

Too many to recite.

Still later when I broke my ankle in an out landing, jumping from a balloon, he was there first waiting with me for my ride (photo attached) sharing stories of his own accidents.

Tonto taught, learned and lived skydiving. He will be missed.

JSC will not be the same.

Now thats the one thing that was always a constant with Tonto, he would never fly off the handle when you did something silly and hurt yourself in the sport, he would use it as a tool to educate not only yourself but others at the DZ.

I remember when I flew a friends FX 96 into the ground .... so not my finest moment, and I should have known better. He chatted to me about what I thought I did wrong and how I could prevent that from happening again. While others stood around a spoke smack etc

Humble and open ...

Although I only met Tonto a few times he had a huge impact on my life as a skydiver. He got me hooked onto the nylon crack. And even though we only shared one wingsuit flight together he was always there for anyone who needed advice on skydiving and life. He will be sorely missed by the Birdmen of the Namib.

I'm not going to read through all of these before telling you my story about Tonto. I never even met him, yet he was incredibly friendly and helpful introducing me to the South African skydiving community, to the extent that I was back in South Africa 'gatecrashing' the honeymoon of two friends I met at Wonderboom when we got the news of his death.

He was always helpful, friendly and someone whose advice I trusted, shame he isn't around to give me advice when I'll next need it (whether I want it or not!).

Howzit Tonto, although we never met, you are special to me and gave me some fantastic friends I'll have for the rest of my life. I can never thank you enough for that.

I copied this PM here as it touched me so much when he sent to to me last year after I broke myself - he didn't know me then, and yet cared enough to lend some friendly advice:
"Sorry to hear that. I had heard there were 2 incidents at Wonderboom on Saturday AM, but I had no idea it was you.

It's a long road to getting better, and the worst thing is, you're not sick (you're broken) but people treat you like you're sick.

You'll be very frustrated at times. Please, please be careful with your loved ones, esp your boyfriend. I was a complete assh0le when I bust myself and destroyed a good relationship, so be careful.

Accept the pain, and work REALLY hard in Physio from right now. Don't accept that you won't be perfect. Don't!

If you need insight or advice or just need to whine, go ahead, OK?

Blue SKies,

t "

Thanks T - you were right. I am now married to that boyfriend (the honeymoon that Skytash crashed - thanks my friend! Smile) I remember why I kept this message: it was beautiful and sincere and I will pass it on to those who break themselves cos it is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received, and now I'm crying and can't finish what I wanted to say

I of course went to the incident reports and found one in South Africa. In disbelief, I opened it really not wanting to. So here I am posting in the Blue Skies In Memory of. In total shock.

I never knew Tonto personally but I just adored the guy on Dz.com. We always seemed to be on the same page about things and Tonto always had something useful and helpful to offer. I very much enjoyed getting to know him on Dz.com.

Tonto was a real character. Always outspoken, always fun and always an inspiration.

There are a few people I'll always remember from my early days of skydiving at Stellenbosch. Tonto is definitely one of them.

I remember him renaming my mate Frank because Gerwald was too hard to say and it stuck. That was Tonto's typical irreverant sense of humour.

I remember him and Gary Beyer arriving at the DZ with knuckles scarred and bleeding from KungFu training... that was the level of their dedication to everything they did.

I remember him encouraging me and teaching me and I'm glad he did, I've had a great life in the sport.

I remember him arriving back at Stellies after a year or two in the States on the cutting edge with his new Jonathan.

I'm glad he was still living life to the full and striving for that edge.

Go Tonto!

What a tremendous instructor and friend. I had the priviledge of teaching him tandem and watching him use this new tool. My favorite picture of him is on a tandem at sunset with that big grin. Drove through to Carltonville for Eric's memorial service and got absolutely lost. Time against me, just I drove home again. Gotta get myself a GPS.

Notwithstanding connotations associated with the movie, Eric had "A Beautiful Mind"

That’s how I’ll remember him.

This was posted on the local listserve of the dropzone Tonto called home - Johannesburg Skydiving Club www.jsc.co.za

--------

Dear Raymond,
I do not have the E Mail address of the Dropzone, so could you please send it to the Club on our behalf? How are you and all the skydivers who knew our boy Tonto? We as a small family owe you so much - we could never thank you enough for your kindness, care, and love in this dark time.....so much was organised and beautifully organised, with great kindness, unbelievable the help and support we had from all of Eric's friends.

We are daily in touch with his love Taya and what an honour to have her as virtually another member of our family...we are bound together with this tragedy for ever...no matter what happens in her life in the future, there will always be the 7 years that she was the light of his life, and as she said so emphatically at the Memorial service, "He was my Life!!!!"

She has been so wise, so fair in her decisions especially as regards the two girls. They were Eric's greatest joy and he provided for them and their Education, school and university, as well as maintenance till they are 25. Even Susan told us that Eric was a wonderful Father.

James Melliar told us that you guys made him so welcome that he felt like one of you when he arrived that day at the Club. He also visited us in Wellington and he has always been like another son to us. Pierre was so kind to let us meet at his lovely home to allow us to talk and think about Eric's Life that calm night. We are in debt to you all...the lovely Ute and her blond friend, Maresh and Bert as well as lovely Samantha with Gavin and Julia Schook who are like parents to Caleigh and little Shanna. We are truly blessed that Tonto was so loved...Justice and Thomas included.

Now that he is gone and we are such a small family..just the two of us and Colleen Tonto's only sister, who is completely broken. She keeps on saying "He was my Rock" my little brother who grew into my strength, he had such insight into her problems and was there with advice for all of us. We want you to know that now that he is gone and out of our sight, we will be so happy to talk about him to any of you passing through Wellington. You are part of him and knew him nearly better than we did. We were not aware of all the kind things he did for little Silindile ..he and Taya...they gave her a life with sounds of love and care as Pam explained to us. How proud she was of him....that he walked in the shacks of Diepkloof and Kliptown without fear...that God walked with him. Taya and Tonto finding fresh live chickens for the l70 young Aids Orphans that she teaches and feeds and dresses and educates...virtually an impossible task for one Good Woman to cope with.

We want to thank you as a unique group of friends for starting a fund for the little deaf Silindile....otherwise how would her poor parents with scarcely enough to eat, have paid for her taxi to take her from the shack to the School at St. Vincents? We believe what you give away is never lost !

Thinking back to that day that Tonto was honoured by his Sky-family in that large tent... filled with friends, family and flowers...tall white flowers and hundreds of long stemmed red roses....it was so beautiful a memory. The fact that Taya's father came from America and that he was the first one to tell us about this special boy called Eric....was a great comfort to us. We were told that all the Skydiving Clubs closed for THAT Saturday in honour of such a dedicated Sky-lover who cared so deeply about the Sport. What a deep thought!
Raymond how much we appreciated your plea for good in everything that day..from your pure heart..and you know how deeply we believe in our Lord Jesus..thank you again.

We cannot think about Eric without thinking of his Life with you. Please come and have a cup of tea and we can keep a small link with you and your sport. Thank you for your unbelievable support and generous contributions towards Eric's life. Our fondest love and appreciation. Thank you Raymond for helping us to convey our thanks and thoughts to his friends.

Love to all, with future thanks for keeping an eye on the young girls some weekends when they visit you!

Much love....
from John and Edith Stephenson.

Today is five years since my first jump. Five years since i first looked at your smiling face in the sky. I've come a long way since then, and you were with me every step of the way. There's not a day that goes by that i don't think about you and i don't think there ever will be again. I miss you my friend, i hope you're swooping the hell out of those pearly gates.

Not sure where else to post this but we got word today on one of our radio's that a company, not sure of the name, is sponsaring Sindile's, the little deaf girl t was sposaring out of his own pocket, full education. Now as far as I am interpreting this it means that all her books, taxi fares, and school tuition is paid for until she matriculates. Christmas came early today Smile

The company's name is Aon (medical aid?). Silindile was chosen for the 'Christmas Wish' by a local radio station (94.7 Highveld Stereo) and Aon stepped up. Below is the excerpt from their website:

" 3. Silindile

Our third wish this morning comes from a friend, namely Chantelle Williams. Her friend Taya has been supporting little Silindile for a few years now. Unfortunately Silindile is def and required special schooling, for which Taya has been helping out with. The problem is that Taya is only a student and sometimes cannot afford to support Silindile, but nevertheless always finds a way! Together we need to ensure that Silindile is looked after for many years to come, and Athene Van Mazijk, CEO of Aon South Africa is proud to help out and to sponsor Silindile’s school fees at ST Vincent’s and the transport to and from her school for the rest of her schooling career. "

Respect!

I knew Eric well when he jumped at Skydive ElDorado in Kansas. I was a jump pilot and I remember him joking about driving a borrowed car and getting pulled over by the police and handing the cop a South African driver's license. The cop didn't know what to do with it so he finally let him off with a warning.

Blue skies, Eric.

Quote:
Man, in general, is ignorant of his divinity. His mind and consciousness are veiled by the false light of Maya. Maya is the way we perceive and interpret Reality... We perceive not what is, but what we believe to be. Maya produces a deceiving state of duality, of object and subject. All appearances in the mind and consciousness as a product of Maya are illusory and unreal. The mind, not understanding the nature of Maya, is indeed the slayer of the Real. This ignorance of Reality causes man's prolonged stay in samsara. Recognition of the Clear Light, of Reality, of the Unity of Being, releases man from his spiritual bondage. ..Man's loftiest aspiration should be directed to the awakening to Reality as the highest religious goal, and this illumination naturally terminates the ceaseless rounds of birth and rebirth in the samsaric worlds.

Re: [sangiro] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

Holidays are always difficult when you have lost someone you love. I went to the African Freefall Convention fearing the pain of Eric not being there, fearing the ghosts of our time there together two years ago when we organized wingsuit flocks and ran the first PASA wingsuit instructor rating course together. There was pain, but I found home and redemption in the warmth of friendship and the freedom of the big sky.

On 29 December, I jumped again for the first time since he died. I cried in the plane. I cried while flying. I cried under canopy, and after landing. Thank you to those who quietly held my hand, gave me hugs, and without saying anything respected what I was going through as I processed the loss of my life partner, a man I spent more than 5 years with.

Caleigh did an amazing job managing business in the canteen. When I look at her I see so much of Eric, and I was honoured to have her in the PAC on the sunset load 31 December when I went up to do a 2-way with him and try to say goodbye. I asked her to hold onto my engagement ring for me until landing. I had not jumped without it since he gave it to me over Easter in 2006 and needed to know that I could.

I jumped out and had more than two minutes of flying with him off my wingtip. We came around the edge of a cloud and into the setting sun, and as I felt him next to me hot tears welled up in my goggles. Every flight, no matter how beautiful, has to end. We choose life; we pull. I said goodbye.

Although I still get that clenching pain in my chest from his loss, I feel more peaceful accepting that everything changes. This is what he believed and practiced: "life is pain". Pain is just the other side of joy and love. I miss a lot of things, the hardest of which is the connection to Caleigh and Shanna that came from his role both as father and partner to me. But no one can fill his shoes now that he's gone. We can only reassess our own journeys in light of the space he has left along our paths. I am proud of the man he was, the partner he was, and of his soul's journey.

It is a new year, and there is goodness in remembering how he took pride in the accomplishments of those he cared for. Somewhere around the 15th skydive at Mafikeng I realized that smiling in the open door of the Porter is as much tribute to the way he loved and lived as my tears are. And as I let go, I feel him more and more as part of me.

I hope the same will be true for his daughters, and that they will continue getting to know their dad. Not just the skydiver and skydiving legend, not just the dropzone regular with a unique sense of humour who lived to jump. He was so much more than that in the last five years: a man with a successful professional career, who recognized the value of spending time with his loved ones off the DZ as well as in the air, who wanted his kids to go to university and see the world and live a well-rounded life. He had found balance, however tenuous. Perhaps because I am a skydiver too, I admire the way he applied compassion and commitment both within and outside of the sport--something that can be very difficult to do.

I honour my life partner, a man with whom I found true love and real friendship. I believe that what he did in life is more important than his death. Now that he is gone I will continue to love him in the way I live.

Re: [sangiro] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

Another tribute that I think belongs here, by our kung fu teacher, was translated and read by a friend at t's memorial service.

My name is Raymond Keung, I’ve been Eric’s Kungfu teacher. Eric and I met in 2003. At the time, we were staying in the same building. Initially, we merely used to exchange greetings in the corridors. One night in 2004, I was teaching a student in our parking lot. Eric and Taya saw us and asked whether I would be willing to teach them Kungfu. As I later discovered, Eric has been doing martial arts from a very young age. Eric was the 2nd student I have in South Africa. Taya was the 3rd. That night, our relation as teach and student began and from then on, every Wednesday night, we trained.

Eric was a keen student. His physical as well as mental strengths were remarkable. He showed a genuine respect towards the Chinese culture and the teacher student relationship.

Eric was always willing to offer a helping hand. Despite the many demands on his time, he agreed to help me set up a Kungfu school. Unfortunately, this meant that he had to sacrifice many precious Friday nights in Braamfontein and often needed to drive after training to JSC very late at night. During classes, Eric assisted in the teaching of students. He demonstrated an extraordinary ability to explain martial art concepts. I’ve no doubt that he employed the same coaching style during skydiving. In addition to the classes, Eric helped me during many Lion dance shows, whether at the Chinese New Year festival celebrations in Town or other ceremonies. Eric was part of the Kungfu school, part of the family.

Eric was devoted to his own family. Once I saw in our parking lot that Eric was helping his daughter to learn to ride the bicycle, a sign of a caring father.

His love for Taya was deep. Eric and I often spoke openly about many things during Kungfu trainings. He was often afraid that their relationship would put undue pressure on Taya during her studies. However, despite the testing period of physical separation, they managed to maintain their relationship. This is only possible through deep and unconditional love.

The last time I saw Eric was during my birthday in July this year. Eric was there with his two daughters. We took our last picture together that day.

Eric’s passion for martial arts arose from his desire to explore, his desire to experience life to the fullest and his appreciation for the true meaning of life. These attributes are rare and admirable. The manner in which Eric carried himself in the capacities as a student, a teacher, a father and a partner to Taya showed that he was a selfless who always gave out more than he took back. He was my dearest student and friend and will remain in our memories forever.

From myself: I got to know t, as many of you did, through the AFF course. But more than that, I started skydiving at a time when I was desperately seeking meaning in my life. More than skydiving, t introduced Kungfu to me. Through t’s introduction, I have rediscovered my cultural roots by starting Kungfu under the teachings of Sifu Keung. Tonto has taught me, in the 2 or so years I’ve known him, more about skydiving, Kungfu and life than most people I’ve come across. Those evenings of Kungfu training between Sifu Keung, Eric, Taya and me in that parking lot will be fondly remembered. I will practice Kungfu for the rest of my able life. And I’d like to think that in so doing, I’ll be carrying with me Tonto’s teachings and influence everywhere I go.

Wow, been a year since t's death yet it still feals like yesterday.

Thought I would like to share some of the good and bad stuff following t's demise. First the bad.

Losing t was a bad thing, no two ways around that fact, it schocked most poeple in ways they did not expect. t was well loved all over and he touched a lot of people in many ways. Losing t we lost a lot of confidence in SA regrading wingsuiting, canopy piloting and a great person with whom i learned a lot from. But from all this we were taught how to pick this back up

So finally the good. Having somebody die is bad but I would like to tell of the few things that I was given by t following his death.

Firstoff I realised how I can help people who are simply put, breaking apart. I obtained t's last student as a great new friend, t's girlfriend Taya has become a truly great friend.

But the greatestthing I got which I will carry with me is how he taught people in all walks of life, from skydiving to the lowest class, shack living people to the overly rich, important people. He taught me how to teach people.

I am proud to say that that I was taught by one of the greates teachers the world ever had the preveledge to have.

Finally to Taya, this day will propably and most knowingly be very hard on you. I do not have the picture so can someone please post it but I want you to remember the outlanding on Sat with the 100+ kids all grabbing and smiling, not a hint of aggression all loving, screaming TONTO!!!!!

t, thanks.

Re: [gainer] Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend [In reply to] Can't Post

Well said Dian.

The last year has been hard on a lot of people, and i think we've all dealt, or tried to deal with it in our own way - some of us have coped through the support of friends and others haven't.

For me, going through six months of injury without tonto was especially hard, he was always a pillar of support and his constant phone calls made a difference and without him there this time i went through some really dark times.

Even now, whenever i drive out to the DZ and see a car that looks like his i still catch myself driving up to the window ready to wave and see that smile, and then i realise that it's not him and never will be.

Still, even though he is gone, we all keep his spirit alive inside of us in the way that we teach students like you're doing, in the way that when i swoop i imagine walking off the landing area and having him compliment me on a job well done, or in the way we live our lives. And that i think is the greatest lesson he taught all of us.

Today is Eric's birthday. It's the second year I've celebrated his birthday without him. Some things get better with time and other feelings still sting just as much. I miss him a lot, and that hasn't changed. I don't think it ever will. Today I am managing to feel grateful for the time I had, and for the love of someone who was not just a partner but also my best friend.

He was his own man. He was a good man. Happy birthday, t.

Thanks for the pictures t.

My side, I've only had about a gazillion times wanted to ask his advice but more recently I have learned what is the difference between a good teacher and a bad teacher.

The bad teacher either knows too much, usually do, or think they do, they overflow the amount of work to the student, aka give them too much info.

A good teacher knows that he does not know everything, sees the world from his student's perspective and most importantly is still and will always be a student.

t was a student up till the day he died. I know cause he asked for advice just the previous evening.

From this I can hopefully be a fraction of how good he was
