What do you budget to attend a boogie?
Can't Post
I have searched for this to no avail.
When planning to participate in a boogie, how do you budget? What costs do you consider? How do you control costs? While I know that replies like "Budget? What is a budget?" or "Just sell everything in one room of your house." are inevitable... I am seeking concrete feedback on how to anticipate costs and plan accordingly.

Or to quote you...
If you want to know what spending a weekend at a skydiving boogie feels like you need merely take all your money out of the bank and burn it. Then snort the ashes into your nose and mouth, throw yourself down the stairs a couple times and then drink until you pass out in the yard in a pile of dirty clothes. You'll feel just like you spent the weekend boogieing, without all the hassle of traveling to a dropzone and doing that skydivin' and partying stuff.
-Zing
Is this the same Zing that was at Eloy? If so, I am the one buying rubbers at the dinner table.

I've done boogies for $50.00 for food and beer and plus gas money. Then again I showed up to the boogie and packed for jumpers or did tandems at the DZ to pay for some jumps and other food. All in all if you want to do a few jumps and not work you're looking at a minimum of $200.00 if you live within a couple hours of the DZ and tent camp with cheap food.

I always consider travelling 1st, and my luck is generally not great.
In 2004, I flew from South Africa to Eloy for 15 dives when I had budgeted for 40 due to bad weather. In an effort to spend that, I flew to LA and hired a car to Perris. I should have hired a U Boat. I did 1 dive at Elsinore. Total travel costs around $2000 for 16 dives... $125 per jump.
In 2007 I went to Germany for the AN-72 boogie, again budgeting for around 40 dives. Travelling and accomodation were far more expensive in Europe. Crap weather again, so around $4200 for 13 skydives... $329 per jump.
What made both trips worthwhile were the people I shared them with. I have a bunch of dives already, so more dives don't mean that much. Time with people who matter means much more.
(And Africa is a long way from just about everywhere...)

Note to self: keep an eye on Tonto's boogie schedule ... and go elsewhere. Sounds like you're the one Crowded House wrote that song about.
I have never really considered the cost of travel in the cost of the boogie, at least not directly. Yes, I think through how much it's going to cost me (both in time and money) and then decide whether that particular event is worth it in my mind. But I don't actually calculate a per jump cost.
Instead, as long as I enjoyed myself and got home safe, it was a good boogie, whether I got in 3 jumps or 30.
I've also been fortunate that often the travel costs for me are negligible because I'm either tacking it onto a work trip or using the frequent flyer miles that I've accumulated from work trips.

Budget depends on alot of variables.
1) Travel Costs. How much will cost you to get to the Boogie. Sometimes this is an expensive plane ticket others it is just a tank or two of petrol and some drive time.
2)Where will you stay? Tent on the DZ doesn’t usually cost much. Hotel?? Can run the budget up but your own shower and a real bed is nice. 3) Registration Fees? How much is registration for the Boogie.
4) How many Jumps you plan on making?
5) Beer. Is this your FIRST Boogie? First time at that DZ? Plan on any other Firsts while you are there?? Beer fines must be paid.
Add all that up and then add about 25% more for incidentals and you should have your Budget. Of course you will blow way past that number but atleast you know HOW much you went over budget for the Boogie.

I am sorry but I am going to post an ACTUAL reply with actual numbers and explanations. It won't be funny or witty but it will give an actual account of a 4 day skydiving vacation on a budget. The figures are from Z-hills last December. $90.78 1 Coached Re-currency jump $482.46 for 22 Jump tickets @$21.93/ticket $326.35 4 Days equipment Rental @$81.50/day $138.60 Southwest Airlines (Round trip Airfare BWI to Tampa) $90.00 Ride to the DZ (Round trip) $0 Lodging(Slept in a tent) $80.00 Food @$20.00/day Grand total:$1,208.19 for the whole Boogie If you don't rent gear $881.84 The food includes a couple of beers around the bonfire No Bail on that one. Add $45.13 for Morning after pill ("Plan-B"@CVS) $10.00 STD clinic $6.29 Postage to get my shoe back from her in the mail.
There might be other expenses but that is the most complete, honest and straightforward account I can give of four and a half days of fantastic time

Thanks in advance.
Blue skies.
Seeing as this appears to be your 'first' boogie, you need to account for your beer costs!!
Also not mentioned here... some boogies have some poker in the evenings. I tend to budget for that so that Lee can play his 6, 9 and suck out on my pocket KK's...
Regardless of the cost though, it's a good time and it's great to hang out with great people.

I at least make sure I have enough Heineken in the big cooler so that "maybe I won't notice" how many are missing the next day if I sleep in the tent - which by the way, is an excellent design, but not quite soundproof.
I just laugh in the middle of the night when I hear stealth footsteps close in, cooler 'foop' open, glass rattling among glass & water & ice, and super-soft closing.
Sometimes I say "hey, take two so you don't have to come back so soon - I'm a light sleeper" and laugh.

Well, the way I see it, I'm there to have fun, and a few or several beers are not worth getting bent out of shape over. We all know how sometimes ideas we have when we're already drunk wouldn't seem so bright otherwise.
Besides, it's rare that there's someone I really despise around - if there were, I know you don't know me that well, but trust me, they wouldn't dare risk it.

But really, it doesn't happen often enough to worry. There's usually nothing left to steal by late.

My first boogie I didnt "budget" for heli, balloon and golf cart rental if available. Before going I thought "I wont need that" but once there I was pissed I didnt have the extra cash set aside for it. I equate it to someone getting video on their tandem, after its all over they wish they had. And hell if your there and you dont want any spec aircraft jumps you can buy something shiny for yourself.

I dont see the sarcastic remark smiley face so Im not sure if youre serious.
First off you dont "need" a golf cart, but Ive also had people tell me you dont "need" to skydive.
I think we could have an entire thread of things to do with a golf cart at a boogie, my personal favorite, theyre always fun for a pick-up game of golf cart football.

I attend most to all of the midwest boogies - Hillbilly, Redemption, WFFC, Couch Freaks, KSUPC, whatever is boogying within an 8'hour drive. I have most of my costs down pat, and I can almost always have a good time on $500.
I budget about $100 for food and travel. I do it cheap; Lunch meat in a cooler, "Big-K" soda, et cetera. I sleep in my car or in a tent, and I don't buy stupid shit. The rest is for jump tickets. $400 is a touch less than 20 jumps, and if I make less than that, I usually top it off with a Tshirt or something.

Update to the boogie costs A week in Z-Hills $159.20 Southwest airlines:flight to Tampa $95 Ride to Z-Hills from airport and back $275 For 11 jumps ($25/jump) $71.20 Cost of food and drinks (oh-so-many drinks) for 6 and a half days $0 Lodging (Tent) For a grand total of: $600.40
Things to consider here: 1) The weather kept me on the ground. 2) I spent 2 days doing a coach course and a day sitting in on an AFF FJC 3) Another FYI for calculating costs $185+(2 jump tickets) Coach course with http://www.Skydiveratings.com

I'd say it cost about $200-250 a day for a boogie, give or take. The biggest factors being hotels/tent and transportation there (flight/car). This has been my general experience. I'll keep a tab on what I spend in 4 days in Fitzgerald in March and post back here if I remember to dig up this thread.

No. I refuse to check what I spend. I will then have to factor in shit like what I paid the hair lady to dye my hair and the IRS doesn't appreciate receipts that say "hookers and blow".

Z-Hills Swoop Comp Numbers:
Plane ticket $199.10 - $100.17 (refunded due to blizzard) = $98.93 Baggage - $15.00 Hotel - $152.58 / 2 = $76.29 Comp registration + 4 jumps = $175.00 Rental car - $106.89 (story at bottom) Packer - $26.00 Incidentals and food - $124.74 + $50cash I probably spent Gas to get home - $102.73
That should cover most things - Total = $775.58 or roughly $193.90 per jump.
Given the people I was hanging out with, and what I learned........well worth it, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. However I want FL weather to cooperate next time.
Could have cost me more, but Hertz screwed up the transition on the rental car contract to drive back to Baltimore from Zhills so badly they just canceled the extra $150 off my card, which I am thankful for. It ended up costing the same as the refunded flight...less the 1200 mile drive home.

$75 Speeding Ticket don't actually cost $75. You can't forget the court costs!
I totaled a car already, so my insurance is as high as it can go. The police officer was being "nice" and took 10 miles off the ticket so I don't have to come to court in Virginia after I told her I was coming back from a skydiving boogie ...and she was like "What is a boogie?" I had to show her the rig, logbook, USPA card and wingsuit before she believed that I just spent five days sleeping in a tent and driving 440 miles each way and paid $800 just to skydive.

I see a disturbing trend in your expense report. You're spending way too much money on alcohol. By now, you really should be experienced enough to know how to get it free.

My suggestion for carolinafest to save some money/time: - Buy stuff before you get to the DZ, It is far from anything. It will save you gas money. - Don't get caught speeding on I-81. 10 Mph=$75 - Also, all around the DZ there are cops waiting throughout the boogie. They know we are there all week. No open containers - Nipple clamps are overpriced in Carolina. Get them in VA - Pitch your tent so that the tree gives you shade in the morning. Also bring a tarp. - [Sarcasm]Deet is your friend[/Sarcasm] - You can drink with the Rodriguez brothers, just don't try to keep up. Double goes for SkymonkeyOne. - Its a Doug eat Doug world - Snarf snarf snarf - The funeral home that is 5 miles to the south also does bail bonds. - Get up early for the free loads. (Captain obvious) - Save money on STD testing: hot sauce double bagger
