I had a malfunction and... Can't Post

(I think) the cause was:
RR#1-FXC fired on the same time I pulled the main.
RR#2-Bad line twist on my canopy.
RR#3-Line over.
RR#4-Broken lines
RR#5-Bag lock.
RR#6-High speed spinning malfunction (one toggle came undone).

All right, the list above is all my malfunctions. I'm not looking for numbers, just type of malfunctions, but you're free to list all your malfunctions.

RR stands for "Reserve Ride"!

Have fun,

I think I've had line twists a few times....maybe even 4 or 5 once, but I cleared them pretty easily. I think my WL was around 0.9 at the time.

Oh, and my brain has malfunctioned a few times causing me to make some poor decisions.

Good old tapewells and a belly mount 24' ripstop reserve saved my life. Here is a picture of the reserve container some 20 odd years after it saved me.

RR1: Spinner on 135 heatwave
RR2: Bag lock
RR3: Tension knots on experimental lines.
RR4: Unknown, but it was an ugly mess of linetwists (flying straight) and what looked like a step through. I spent all the time (until my minimum cutaway alt of 1500) working out of the linetwists and mess but ran out of time. The step through made kicking out of them near impossible although I did get really close before running out of altitude. Tempting as it was to keep working on it, I followed my rules and proceeded with my emergency procedures.

unless someone took apart my slinks when i wasnt looking, i dont think it was installed incorrectly. that was my 4th jump of the day. it was such a mess of tangled HMA i didnt really mess with it too long. a little shift in my harness equaled a not fun dive.

I am just curious what kind of main and container you were jumping when a riser got stuck in the container? Was it a sub terminal deployment? I know weird things can happen at any time I have just never actually known anyone this happened to but I have heard of it.

Brand new Vector 3. They have covers over the reserve risers and then the main risers. New, stiff riser covers + a packing mistake (main risers stowed under reserve riser covers) = trapped main risers.

No complaints, it was my fault. Pirate

Edit to add: It was a Sabre2 170 and the container was fitted for that size canopy. Terminal deployment.

RR #1 - Jump #13, AFP level 6 - Brake lock. The canopy sniveled and opened fine but a slow turn to the left. As I tried to undo the left brake, I found the canopy to turn faster as I yanked on the brake. At 3000' decided it wasn't worth it and pulled the cutaway pouch. Even before I could throw it away, the reserve was fully inflated over my head - thank you skyhook.

First 4 on round canopies:

RR#1 Mae West on Paracommander
RR#2 Cone lock/total on B4
RR#3 Pilot chute caught on someone else's foot, I
broke away and glanced off 3rd person's
canopy in freefall, tearing out 2 panels.
3rd person cutaway and nearly hit my reserve
in freefall. I don't do formation pullouts any
more Crazy
RR#4 Pilot chute fell through a modification slot
on opening, causing partial. Hand deployed
reserve, landed with both out.
RR#5 Floating pilot chute handle on borrowed gear.
RR#6 Tension knot from trash packing Raven.

Changed to elliptical canopies -- no more malfunctions in last 1600 jumps.

PC in tow no reserve ride probably should have been.

RR#1 High wing loaded canopy backwards.

Both of those could have definately been avoided. and won't happen again.

Since I have had a canopy backwards I got anohter container and have two ris so I am not swapping canopies anymore much less while still packed in the D-bag.

PC in tow was a stop link installed incorrectly when I went to a kill line PC. I feel as if I will be paying attention when I have to repace the bridle. That happened before I became a rigger.

Have you used a special "swap"-bag for that?

I had 30+ swaps so far. I made a swap bag for that. Risers are locked against the top of the bag and D-bag can not freely move inside the bag either. There is still a little risk of incorrect re-attachment, so I repacked it if I had time.

2 who-knows-what malfunctions with steering lines and canopy fouled on my Starlite
2 pilot chutes in tow. One with a ragged-out A3 I'd converted to a throw-out, and one with a homemade square pilot chute.
1 total when I couldn't get the pud out on an old Racer.
2 spinners of some sort on a Firefly
1 hard pull in a BOC
1 fired brake/line twists/spinner on a Diablo. Bigway, I was low, so I chopped
1 linetwists/spinner of unknown origin on the same Diablo. Bigway, I was low, so I chopped.

The last malfunction would have been salvageable if I hadn't been low, but the Diablo goes down really fast in a turn.

And yes, I did used to experiment with my gear

#1 (jump ~23) - hard pull (Cordura ROL) to Fury220
#2 (jump ~850) - PIT -> hard open -> two out... released main to a different Fury220

As to intentionals:
~5 from Cruislite XL's (packed in old chest rig)
~20 from NavAir 24 (packed in old chest rig)
2 from Strong LoPo (packed in Strong Starmaker Chest Reserve container)

Tip: opening a round/chest by choice is an action best left to the sub-terminal speeds Shocked

On my 4th AFF jump my PC ended up on top of my canopy enducing a right turn. Only to stop the turn was pull done hard on my left toggle. I didn't pull the reseerve cos i thought i had it under control. Never thought about the landing though...Shocked

Luckily, although it was quite hard i managed to not break anything

Got a very big telling off from my instructor for not chopping. Learnt my lesson that day!! hehe

Re: [fueler] I had a malfunction and... [In reply to] Can't Post

dude...

I see your profile says Nitron150 @1.6 and that seems to be what you are flying in the photo, which looks like maybe tension knots on one or both sides keeping the slider stuck up there.

What canopies were your spinners on and what was your canopy experience at that point?

I have a few hundred jumps (almost always in a Birdman S3) on a Nitro 120 @ 1.6 and that thing resisted spinning up in twists like nobody's business.

I did chop a Nitro 135 though when I just downsized and went elliptical at 450 jumps and I was flying my wingsuit at the Holiday Boogie in elopy with a MAX pull height of 2500ft. Spinning on my back below 2000ft in a wingsuit freaked me right the hell out the first time.

Since then I have learned to deal with deployments better and given that same situation now I am confident I could have fixed it before hitting my hard deck.

Just wondering if your spinners are the same kind of deal.

Re: [980] I had a malfunction and... [In reply to] Can't Post

Yo!

the first spinner i had was on an older Nitron150. i had just down sized and switched from a sabre2 190. i know that is generally not a recommended progression, but hey, its what i did. i had somewhere around 530 jumps when i bought the first Nitron150.

that first spinner was a super rushed, low deployment after a leader of a flocking dive corked and sent people every which way. it was a big mess. i tracked for longer than i normally would because i wasnt sure where the hell all the other bodies went. i was low...didnt waste too much time fighting it.

second spinner had me on my back and did spook me a little bit. wasnt making any progress as i got real close to my 1800' hard deck so i choose to chop it.

these two chops were no more than 2 weeks apart
Crazy

Alex

edit>> as you mentioned, the jump i made in my canopy choices and size didnt seem like a big deal until i found myself under line twists. things happen fast at a moderate wing loading. i have had line twists since then and it really isnt as spooky once you've been there a couple times.

Re: [leapdog] I had a malfunction and... [In reply to] Can't Post

no RR's yet... *knock on wood*

I've had line twists several times... but on one of my hop&pops this past weekend I had a baglock.

Interestingly enough, since I hopped out and pulled at 7k, it stood me up and when I looked up and saw the bag floating around above me I knew i had a little bit of time to mess with it before chopping. I reached up and grabbed the risers and gave a sharp yank down on them which ended up busting the bottom 2 rubber bands on one side and let the deployment continue on as scheduled. Ended up only having a couple of line twists and was in the saddle by 6k with plenty of time to still play with my canopy *whew*

I packed a little bit more carefully the next time. Smile

The custom is that you owe your rigger a bottle of his choice if you use your reserve and it functions properly and saves your life.

What if you were on the front of a Tandem and the pilot in command used the reserve? I am not sure of the protocol here.

All right, the list above is all my malfunctions. I'm not looking for numbers, just type of malfunctions, but you're free to list all your malfunctions.

RR#1 jump #25 (got my A-License on this dive):
line twists

In retrospect I had plenty of altitude to deal with the line twists but as the twists got down to the risers I made my decision right then after a quick breath. I was happy to hear the mocking "Ha Ha!" with the Nelson-like finger point of my favorite packer as I walked to the hanger with my reserve bundled in my arms . . . Smile

I had a very similar reserve ride. No shit, there I was minding my own business when Kyle Grim wraped the lines of his canopy around me. Very similar to the canopy wrap in the movie Cutaway.

#1 - Spinning linetwists. Stiletto 150@1.4 -> Techno 155
#2 - Spinning linetwists. Stiletto 135@1.6 -> same Techno 155
#3 - Spinning linetwists. Diablo 120@1.8 -> same Techno 155

Landed broken lines on a PD 9-Cell twice. Have kept and fixed 5 twists on a Triathlon 120. H&Ps on a bungee pilot are not necessarily a good idea, either.

RR#1: Happened on my 20th Jump. Line Over Mal.

RR#2: Happened somewhere around 1700 Jumps. Was jumping a badly out of trim Sabre. Opened into a line twist or two (probably body position Blush) & a slight turn to the right... then quickly turned into an SBOS Mal when the right side of the canopy collapsed and tucked under.

RR#3: Happended somewhere around 2700 Jumps. Tension knots... left side of canopy not fully inflated... rigging in flight not a good idea... rode reserve the rest of the way down instead.
