Where are all the lightnings?
Can't Post
I know that this is not the place for ads, but I have had my eyes open for a lightning 143 for some time now, without luck. I also saw an ad saying "wanted: lightning 143", that was over a month old, in the classifieds section. Where are all the old lightnings? Do they wander into the desert to die after a couple of years or are they exploding when they are used up?

The 143 is probably one of the most popular-sized Lightnings out there. Good luck finding a used one. There was one advertised on the CRW dog e-mail list last week, but was scooped up before the seller could even respond to my e-mail.

Why yes it was and it's at my house now thank you very much! My 126 sold within an hour of going on the list also. To get on the list email Wendy Faulkner. crwdogs@boxofclue.com

Yeah. The CRW sport is growing so used Lightnings are hard to find. Especially 143's. And what makes it worse than freefall canopies, is that while a freefaller may graduate from a Sabre to a Stilletto to a Velocity, but other than changing sizes cuz of weight gain :-) CRWdogs tend to keep the same canopy for years. You'll get a lot more use out of a new Lightning than you would a freefall canopy, because people tend to always want the latest and greatest freefall canopies..
Heck, I bought my first 113 new. Bought my second one used only because my first one was in the shop for some major repairs! The last one was bought new because my first one was lost somewhere in the jungles of Spain never to be seen again.

The only Lightnings I've seen for sale are the ones Saskia pointed to below.
The new plane in Temple rocks tho. I'm excited. I've already been talking to the new owner about getting a CRW boogie going there in June. More info to come..

I know how you all feel I looked and looked to no avail. Thanks to Wendy putting me in contact with a jumper I REALLY hope to meet someday and personally thank (Paul Bliss) I have a 160. There are a few jumpers who have whoreded the canopies for themselves and never jump them. I'm not going to name any names but they know who they are. Keep looking and asking one will show itself.

Just sold one to Dave H. I think he loads a 193 pretty well, too. I only put a dozen jumps on it, but only flying with some Frog friends. Most of the time I jumped a "borrowed" 143. 143s are very rare.

Elizabeth, forgive me I said it was Wendy who put me in contact with Paul not you. I wouldn't have gone to Puerto Rico last month or Florida in another 7 hours if it wasn't for your help. It's my goal with the Lords Blessing to be jumping it for the 100 way. Great canopy pretty much flies itself. I look forward to jumping with you in the near future.

Just glad that you are getting in the air with it Scott, that is the important thing. Really hope you have an enjoyable and very productive CRW Weekend in ZHills!
Looks like a beautiful weekend ahead and you have a great group and organizers to help you get a lot out of it!

Check http://www.performancedesigns.com/store.asp They can get you an L-143, and they can even make it to your specifications!
All kidding aside, I sometimes wonder why we CRWDawgs can't seem to buy new Lightnings - we just pass around the old ones. I worry that maybe if we don't buy some NEW Lightnings from time to time, that P.D. might stop offering them!

I think you should buy a new one and pass it on to me at a great discount after a few jumps.

The main problem is, you get a group or team all jumping lightnings with 300+ jumps on them (3000+ for some people i guess) and you buy a new one and jump with them it is like flying a hot air balloon in relative terms.
Also i guess crw dogs are just tight fisted with money.

The ones that I know that have extra Lightnings are the ones who keep them handy to give newcomers a chance to jump Lightnings on their crw jumps. The others may be competition jumpers who prefer the small ones for rotations, and the appropriate size for the big way records, for example...

Check out your keyboard...she means PD...S is the next letter over from D
Ana is the most EXCITED, ENTHUSIASTIC, ENERGETIC new CRW pup you guys can have! along with her RW team mate GARY...CRW is about to get even more exciting than it already is... I was beginning to feel a plateau and a blah for the sport in general and those two last weekend totally revived the ZEST I have for the sport and our new aspirations for CRW. Sometimes it takes people or a situation to revive that within you....

Owkay. So, yeah, all Lightnings are PD?!?
The questions to ask would be, is it rotation trim or sequential, fabric reinforcement on top or not, tailpocket or not, ZP/F111/hybrid fabric (well all L126's are ZP anyway), ...

Actually, there are three type of lightning, demo (not recommended for Crew formation, because is entirely low porosity fabric), Zero P top skin (Top skin is reinforce, and low porosity in bottom skin) or PS (top and bottom skins are reinforced - best choice for Crew Formation). Information was provided from Fred Whitsitt at Skydive Miami (Homestead).

That's what I said, F111/ZP/hybrid. Never heard the term 'PS' before?!? Nor the term 'demo Lightning'.
Of course you can do CRW with all F111 Lightnings, some of the bigger ones that we have are F111 and they get used regularly. The L143 comes only in hybrid or ZP and the smaller canopies are ZP only. So any L126/L113 is ZP. The (extra) reinforcement is a separate option AFAIK.

I think the term PS is part of the serial number for either all ZP or all F111 Lightnings. Whenever a Lightning goes up for sale, Dogs will run the serial number through PD to find out what type of canopy it is.

Hi Ana,
I've been scouting for a 160 in good shape, with the correct line set, ... I finally just decided to go ahead & order a new one. With prices that people have been asking for used 160's, it's actually not much more to buy new, & then get whatever color scheme you like. Good luck to your peer whatever he decides :)

A quick newb question. Do CReW canopies pack larger then their other skydiving counter parts? I guess it depends on the extras that they are equiped with.

Well my rig barely fits my 168, when packed real tight into the DBag.
I would definetly have to find an older container that was much bigger, because I think it would be pretty stupid for me to step down two sizes from the 168!!!

CReW canopies are bulkier than a typical freefall canopy, but the CReW canopies don't need to be completely inside the container when you're finished packing. If you're going out for freefall then it matters to have your rig nicely sealed to prevent accidental deployment. If you're deploying right out the door like we do for CReW though, you can have parts of canopy sticking out of corners and you can fit a 160 Lightning into your container by simply using a longer closing loop (I've seen some 6"+ long). You just need to make sure the container won't open in the plane (or outside the door) and make sure the bridle is tucked out of the way so it doesn't catch on things in the plane.
In other words, you can use the same rig. Just have fun messing with the folks who ask "Are you going skydiving with that rig!?!?!"

They go very quickly most of the time but I think he may still have it.
The 143 size is about the most popular and in-demand of the Lightnings. She's right, they're usually sold within minutes or hours after being posted to the crwdogs list.
Oh I just found the email from the guy selling his 143 and will PM it... Good luck!
