college jumpers Can't Post

im just wondering how many college jumpers we have on dz.com, also as a side not wondering if any of you college jumpers are from alabama, just really lookin for more people my age, also im wondering if anyone here has any opinions about the attitudes of college jumpers, from what i have seen, very limited as it is, college aged jumpers are a little more reserved in the air and more rambuncious on the ground (partywise), just wondering if any of you more experienced and older jumpers have noticed the same thing

I'm not a college jumper anymore, but I used to be. You might wanna go down to the University of Florida's collegiate boogie in January. There'll be a lot of college jumpers being rambunctious in the air and on the ground. Smile

I'm a college jumper here at MSU (Montana State University - Bozeman). I too started JUST before I went to college and am finally just 3 jumps away from my A! I think, for me, the reason I'm a little more reserved in the air is that 1) I don't have a lot of money (do any of us?) and 2) I'm still early in the learning process. Still its a lot of fun and I'm trying to round up a group of people near Bozeman so we can try to start a club or something, but it's hard. I must say though, when exams come around and you need to get the stress off, I just skydive and it makes everything all better! Wink

im a college jumper!! ohio university... theres only 4 licensed skydivers at my school of 25,000. i know a lot of jumpers my age in my area, but not all are necessarily college kids. i dont necessarily aggree with you that we are more reserved in the air. in most cases, we are all too young to have much experience in the sport, especially if starting at 18 or later in college. i do think a lot of us college age jumpers party really hard...alot, but i have seen way over my fair share of older jumpers blow me away at their ability to stay "youthful" and out party us college kids! most skydivers in general like to party hard. i think age is just a number.... we are all bonded by our unique love for this amazing sport.

We've got a couple dozen or so actives at Georgia Tech. They range from AFF students all the way up to AFF-I's with 1100+ jumps. I've seen at least 5 or 6 that post on dz.com. I dunno about more reserved, I've seen college students do some pretty crazy stuff.

Definitely check out the Collegiate Boogie in Florida. It's usually around the end of January.

yo college student here from Daytona Beach Florida...(yea its not as great as it sounds...prob better we are closer to Deland then daytona).

Im pres of our club so if you have any questions about that let me know. I jumped at skydive AL this summer outside Decatur, worked in huntsville all summer so that was fun.

Check out our website for more info...

As far as college jumpers go, I find a lot are smart in the classroom but not at the dropzone. I was at collegiates last year and I have seen other jumpers think they are "better" then they are. They attempt more dangerous moves because they see others do it.
The truth is, most college students are weekend jumpers, with the exception of a few. They may have 300 jumps, but its over the 4 years of college that they are there. Also they are younger then everyone. They want to be as good as all the older people around the dropzone and its hard to do. I always have to keep reminding myself that I started at 20 yrs old, Im sure a lot of the people around the DZ wish they started that young. Ill get there someday, dont push it!

You aint kidding. More then a couple times until within the past year or so, a couple experienced jumpers would have to knock me down a notch or three. Remind me of my experience level and that being under 25 didn't make me bullet proof.

There are some exceptions though, a lot of the college chicks jumpers I've seen tend to be on the other end of the stick, they seem to lack the confidence they need in their skills. Some of them are actually quite good, especially for their jump numbers, but they still doubt themselves.

I wouldn't say I'm conservative in the air. Average would be a better bet. I know a girl who jumps and is going to start going to school soon as a freshman. I know another who just graduated and has been a skydiver when she was in school.

DZs always need packers, its a great college job and it gives you jump money and its basically a weekend job.Wink

We've got a club at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Basically there are 4 officers, myself and three others, jump #s <100 to >500. We jump together and organize "Leapfests": we organize as many people as we can to go down to SDC and do their first tandem. Then we throw a huge party. Lots of fun, but quite a bit of work to get all those people down to SDC and back. Totally worth it though, I've never heard of someone having a bad time. Even if they don't jump they can still party like a rock star all night.

It's amazing we can keep it going, as we get no support from the UW. We have SDC to thank... Roger in his infinite wisdom gave us a great deal to help us out. $139 tandems (we get $10 of that), and discounts on all AFP jumps. Nice, eh?

The UW sees skydiving as too risky and they don't want to get sued. Seems kind ofa double standard that they'll support whitewater rafting and rock climbing and hang gliding and other risky sports, but not us, despite 11 years of no injuries. Ah well, just another example of skydiver prejudice. Tongue

that is awesome that yall have that club going, i've been tinkering with trying to get a club started here at the university of alabama at birmingham but cant really find anyone interested, so if there are any interested parties reading this please contact me, i think its great that there are so many jumpers out there who are not just working to become better jumpers but working to become better students as well, i think it will be a great thing for this sport in the future if people see that you dont have to be some extreme junkie to skydive, you can also be a consumate professional. i also want to give a kudos to all universities and governing bodies (that includes dropzones) that recognize the hardships of being a college jumper (money wise) and help out a little bit with student rates on jumps and college boogies and other things like that. and if anyone of you guys is ever in alabama, drop by skydive alabama in cullman and maybe we can do a jump together, although i suck major ass, but a jump none the less.

There are 2 events:

Collegiate BOOGIE @ Skydive Williston just outside of Gainesville (amazing time I might add, our club will be going for the 4th year in a row this year) and this is usually MLK weekend.

Collegiate Nationals @ Lake Wales, which is right around the Holidays time. I haven't been but if you wanna compete that's the spot.

I recommend people come out to the Boogie at Williston. It's tons of fun, and the only thing that could make it better is more people. Last year we had Birdman, Aerodyne, and Jumpshack come out demoing gear, and I'm sure it'll be just as good this year. Christina Norris (UF President) organizes the boogie each year. PM me if you'd like her contact info.

Oh yeah, University of Maryland represent!!Wink

The Collegiate Boogie @ Skydive Williston will be Jan. 14th - 17th and I'll be there all day, every day since my club is throwing it. Everyone is invited to a great party with plenty of skydiving.

Re: [justchrisdsp] college jumpers [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm a grad student now, but was an active jumper as an undergrad. College jumpers are the future of the sport. Many national champions made their competition debut at Collegiate Nationals, which is worth every penny to get there. People hail from schools with tons of jumpers and "legacy" clubs and others are the sole reps from their tiny (or large) schools. Trained teams (go Inviscid!) and pickup teams both have a blast. Even after jumping around the world and, last year, on a more serious team, my best skydiving memories and some of my best friends to this day, came from Collegiate Nats. If your on the fence about making the late Dec. trip down to Florida, just think of what Starsky would tell you....

Anybody in Beantown looking for some company in the air, let me know. I'll be doing 4-way again (probably out of Pepperell), but would be happy to jump with anybody on or off student status when I'm not training. A new DZ might be opening with incredible views out in our neck of the woods, by the way. I'd say more but I don't want to jinx it.

Conservative in the air? Not from what I've seen (especially out of the old school Aggies)

Sorry about the old website for the Falling Gators (skydiveuf.com). We are trying to get it updated ASAP but our webmaster has been busy (and I haven't figured it out yet). In case you have not heard, the 7th annual Collegiate Boogie is on for MLK weekend (Jan. 14th-17th) at Skydive Williston (www.skydivewilliston2.com). Although we are not having a CASA or otter, we will have a biplane (and possibly a hot air balloon) along with a Grand Caravan. Camping is available onsite and they do have a couple hot showers/bathrooms. I don't know of any motels, but it's 20 mimutes outside of Gainesville and there are plenty there. We might even have a shuttle for a one-night roundtrip ride there Saturday night Wink. But, the DZ will have the beer and food. If you are still picky, there is a grocery store, Subway and McDonalds within a mile or so. If you are definately coming and would like a long sleeve T-shirt, email me (jsheehan@ufl.edu) your size so I have a rough estimate. Thanks, Jay Sheehan - Falling Gators President Smile

But I'm not going to complain, beggars can't be choosers.

Colorado State University has very few jumpers. I am one of four that I know of and I am the only one who gets out about every weekend. The dropzones here are kind of funny. They go from one extreme to another. Tight assed at one and bandit no rules at others. I'm always looking to take peeps on tandems, but as active skydivers, you know that people don't REALLY want to go usually when they say they do. Blue skies and Big Air Sportz...and CRW.

I am a college jumper. Finishing up this year at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO but will probably continue on and somehow be connected with school and education actively for something new for most of my life. Even after I graduate I still want to go on and get another degree or two. You can never have too many degrees, ratings or hobbies in my book.

I have always wanted to join a team and compete at Collegiate Nationals but have never had a student population with enough interest or experience to build a team. I don't know of any skydivers at Lindenwood (which is where I go now). It is a small private university.

If anyone (students or professors) is interested in a throw together team or going to a skills camp together for a warm up for competition, I would be interested if I met the competitor criteria.

That would be a blast.

hmmm... reminds me of Kanye West:

I dont know where I'm goin.
My Dad died, and he left me his degrees.
My mom would always say "Dad, why dont you work?",
But he just kept learning.
All the other kids parents were working and saving up money for school,
And I was actaully in school all when my dad was in school.
He was so gready with degrees, he took my degree.
And now I'm just glad he left me these.
Because all the regular homeless people have newspaper, and look what I have.
These are documented.
My father left them for me.
And Im going to leave them to my kids.

Re: [GTAVercetti] college jumpers [In reply to] Can't Post

I just graduated in December. I did 1250 jumps while in college (4 years). Student loans will go a long with when coupled with a job (or 2). I also got my AFF rating and have done over 100 of those, though most I donated my pay to keep the cost to the student down.

Coming out of college:
2 full rigs (odyssey's)
1250 jumps
2 Fullface helmets
4 or 5 jumpsuits.
an AFF rating graciously paid for by my college.
Fond memories especially at Collegiate Nationals.
and $24,000 owed in stafford loans.

We jump together and organize "Leapfests": we organize as many people as we can to go down to SDC and do their first tandem. Then we throw a huge party. Lots of fun, but quite a bit of work to get all those people down to SDC and back.

Dougiefresh, yeah I remember win UW students came down to SDC this past summer.. thanks for the eye candyWink. Hit me up with a PM when you think you will be down there this yr

University of Bristol (UK) here! Well I was until last week when I graduated! SmileFrown

We get 80 or so trained every year and are lucky to have 5 or 6 left that qualify by the years end...blame 'student poverty', 20 jumps and the weather. T'is good fun though...both on and off the ground.

College jumper here in Orange, CA. We have a small facebook group with 5 jumpers in it... I think I'm the only one who's progressed past AFF1, however.

I'd love to meet some folks to jump with once I'm out of AFF.

I'm at Washington State University. I haven't found any other jumpers here yet. The closest DZ is 1.5 hours away. I go to the one that's over 2 hours away cause my super hot jumpin girlfriend is thereCool

first year at curtin university western australia. Got skydiving listed for our uni activities. Getting 150 flyers to pin up. Just waiting to see the turn out. 25 000 people on campus. If I get 10 tandems to come out I will be stoked. We got good weather virtually all year, and a sweet dropzone. turbine caravan and cafe, great bunks and a bar. No other jumpers from my uni though. The dz is 1.5 hours away, but i try catch a lift when i can. I need a super hot jumpin girlfriend.

My friend Jarod Houghton (SP?) was a GTA there for a while. I think he is still there. He teaches some art design class or something. Small world. His wife is also there. Her name is Sissavon.

college jumpers [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm from the university of Kent (UK) and theres a club there but its very tiny. Hopefully this year we can make the club bigger and attract those new freshers!

I think i'm the only licensed jumper there now, since the others have graduated! :( But we do have people that have completed AFF but not the rest of the console jumps.

I wonder how many licensed jumpers that are undergrads in UK universities? is there ever a uk univeristy meet up of some sort?

don't know if i ever replied to this thread or not.

anyways, University of Maryland, College park over here. we used to be doing really well but we haven't had any new fun-jumpers join in the last 2 years, so it's just a handful of us now. we get plenty of tandems and AFFs to come out though.

Just let Tink loose around campus. That should bring the AFF's flooding in.

Well, from the topic, I thought the site was going to be about: how do college students afford to jump? I have a full time and can barely afford to! But then again, I have a 200K mortgage.

Combination of student loans, part-time jobs, and college clubs. Many schools have clubs that get at least partial funding, so they can help with some of the gear and training costs.
