One of the reasons to not have a DZO as the S&TA is to have that independent eye on things.

How many S&TAs are staff at the DZ anyways, so there could be external pressure from the DZO since they work for the DZO?

So what people are saying is that in a perfect world there would be a S&TA that had quite a bit of experience, had some ratings, but didn't work for the DZ, had no intrest in "the grey area" and didn't want to go out of his way to screw the DZ either, though.

It'll never happen.

It has happened...and I know him. Marcus Thornton. Wink But I'll grant you that they're very rare individuals indeed.

Well, depending on what you mean by "GREY AREA", I would say that my Dad (S&TA of SD El Paso) would fit in what you say will never happen.

He has a load of experience, ratings, doesn't work for the DZ (gets no free jumps even when taking students up-specifically because he does not want the tie to the DZ as an employee or what not), he doesn't really care what happens at the DZ unless it deals with safety and training, and he is not out to screw over the DZ.

I actually think this is the way to go. I kind of like that there is more than one experienced person with some authority at the DZ other than the DZO. Besides, being a DZO is a lot of responsibility and it would be rough to be a DZO, Instructor, and S&TA.

Man, I wish I could find someone who will be at the DZ regularly, who I don't have to pay to work with students, and who will even pay for their jumps when they train students.

That just doesn't happen often. An S&TA needs to be at the DZ on a very regular basis as well.
