Blindfolded Skydive?

I just came across these pics on facebook, Jumper is doing his 1000th skydive blindfolded.

To me this comes across dumb and a huge risk with lots that can go wrong?

I have never seen or heard of this done before? Is this something new? Old tradition? Or accident waiting to happen?
