There are people who never uses any type of alit, but i'll bet they will swoop better if they reach their initiation point at consistent altitude by using altimeter.

Name one canopy pilot that placed top 5, hitting pro gates that doesn't use altimeter and they go all eye-ball status in USPA canopy national.

It is hard to distinguish between 950-1000. It is even harder to distinguish between 1100-1200 ft, setting up for 450 and 630's.
