DZ began in the 70's
I Started there in 1990
Unfortunately it fell on hard times and the current owner has found other uses for the property (for now?).
I hope it comes back in the future, but visitors to the Wash DC area should know that it is currently closed.
Many other DZ's in the general area (1-2 hrs from DC).

I went to Hartwood just to have a look at another DZ to go, since they are closer than my home DZ from where I live and because that weekend they had discounted jumps.
I was very nicely greeted by the staff as soon as I arrived. They are very friendly and dedicated. Once the paperwork was taken care of, I was asked what kind of jumps I wished to do, so they could introduce me to other jumpers and have fun. A few locals, also approached me on their own initiative with the same goal, trhough the day. Believe it or not, this is not as common as it should be. Generally speaking it is something that I had to ask for at other places (which is fine with me though). But to be asked was very pleasant.
The regulars are very friendly as well.
They are currently using an Otter and a Cessna 206.
The facilities are very nice, comfy lounge with huge window facing loading, landing areas and runways. Packing area is very neat, with padded floor, and large enough to avoid sepping onto someone else's pack job.
One important thing that I loved, is that they have divided their landing areas into 3 sections, one for the staff, one for C and D licence holders and one for A and B licence holders. Of course, you are allowed to use any of them if you cannot make it to "yours" safely. This is definitely a plus in my book.
Last but not the least, they have a bunk house which can accomodate several people, with beds, heatind AND air conditionning.
Overall, I was pleased with their level of professionalism and kindness. I strongly reccommend you to jump at Hartwood if you ever are in the area.

Awesome DZ that is very close to Washington, DC with an Otter! I had been waiting patiently for over a year for Hartwood to re-open under a new owner with a turbine aircraft. Now they have! This past weekend they had $15 Otter jumps! Can't wait to get back out there this weekend!

We are one of the oldest dropzones in the country.Our airport is privetly owned and sits on 190+ acers.We fly a twin-otter and c-206. We are open 7 days a week, but please call ahead on weekdays. We offer indoor padded packing,bunk house, showers, large landing area, riggers on site and friendly atmospher as a few of our ammenities.
